Why focus on up and coming coaches?

If we are willing to throw $2.5 mil at someone, there's no reason we can't be going after coaches that have proven they can win in a BCS conference

I present for your discussion:

Mike Gundy.
Currently makes $900K
used to coaching at a land grant college in a small city
27-22 overall record, three straight winning seasons after a 4-7 stint in his first year
9-3 this season in the Big 12 - losses to the three headed monster in the Big 12 South
"I'm a man, I'm 40" is a soundbite that will always be a positive with recruits

The con to this is that NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE can compete with Oklahoma State's money or facilities. If Oklahoma State wanted to keep him, they could keep him.

is that it would likely be nothing more than a time-waster while he shook down T Boone for the match. That, and his defense sucks, and I have a real problem with the way that sumbitch goes and sits on the bench drawing up f'n sandlot plays while his D is on the field. Get your *** on the sidelines and f'n coach your defense, moron.

Just curious, but where is this $2.5M number coming from? Is it something Byrne stated, or is it just a number people are throwing around?
