That whole situation has been strange. Ray was saying a few weeks ago that he hadn't talked to Wilson about playing BBall - WTF? Isn't that something that should have worked out in August/September rather than December/January?

Yeah that's odd but also many times these guys get into college and just drop the idea of playing both. Maybe he just thought he was going to drop basketball.

Playing two sports in college

Just going to college brings a major challenge to many.

To play two major sports and to manage your required collegiate requirements would be off the charts.

I suspect that everybody would want to see how he(Wilson) handled the situation, then go for it.

Sort of... show me, then we will talk about it, if you think you can still do it.

If he can do everything he has do, why not?

I'm really confused, last night Paul retweeted this:

Elijah Staley@ES14_<small class="time" style="font-size: 12px; color: rgb(187, 187, 187); position: relative; float: right; margin-top: 1px;">13h</small>
DeRunnya Wilson just gave me all the confidence in the world to know I can play 2 sports at MSU! Glad I got to see if they held they word !

Would they not know his grades from the Fall semester already?

Either Rick Ray is not telling the whole story or he is and idiot...

If he is going to play basketball, he needs to be practicing and playing if not, drop it..

Ray was very eloquent about it OnThe call-in show last night. He basically talked about how football players struggle in class work in first semester since they play football during that time and basketball player suffer in second semesters since that is when they play. He said that puts someone in danger of failing grade wise and he wouldn't do anything to jeopardize Wilson's chances of being successful in football. So to blame Ray for this is short sighted in my opinion. I think he would love to play him but he is having to tip-toe around Mullen.

That's the impression I get. That and that Rick Ray doesn't particularly want him either. I'm sure if/when he shows up for basketball practice, Ray isn't going to kick him out. But I don't think he's going to take a lot of time away from the rest of the team to bring him up to speed either.

I'd bet that you're exactly right. Here is my guess as to how it played out

1) Mullen wanted DR to play football
2) He mentioned an opportunity to play both sports in order to help sign him
3) While not entirely restricting him from playing bball, Mullen is probably not going out of his way to make it happen either
4) Football rules the roost
5) Rick Ray is just doing his thing and if he plays, great... If not, no sweat off his back. Whatever the case, it's not Ray's call so he's focusing on what he can control. I've been critical of a lot of things about Ray, but this is one thing that he should not be faulted for in any way, shape, or form

You could play two sports 20-30 years ago......

Yeah that's odd but also many times these guys get into college and just drop the idea of playing both. Maybe he just thought he was going to drop basketball.

Now the demands on the athletes, particularly for football, have ramped up to the point in which it is nearly impossible to do so without shorting one or both.

My take is that he can do it for maybe a couple of years but not in a major role for the BB team. Once he gets to his jr year he really needs to be completely focused on the one he plans on making a living at.

I just get the feeling Ray isn't telling the whole story. There's no way a 30 minute conversation with Wilson and Mullen is all that's stopping the kid from playing basketball at MSU.

I think he just wanted to gauge his interest.

If Wilson waits for the red carpet to be rolled out during mid season, it probably shows that he's indifferent to being 100% committed to Ray's program. He was waiting for Wilson to get on board. If I'm Ray, I know I'm short on on bodies, but I also know in want full attention from the bodies I do have. Probably his way of testing Wilson's desire to be part of the team...

I think Wilson's future paycheck is in football and he should be focused on that. If he wants to play both, I think he should have the opportunity, I just hope that he's fully dedicated to both sports and academics. More power to him if he can pull all of that off.

This.
He was in our basketball warmups at the Ole Miss game. Who gave them to him?
Can anyone just suit up and warm up with the team now?
Ray may be playing all this in the media to get the fans and Mullen on board...

I'm sorry but Ray not knowing how many basketball players are playing for him this season is just absurd. How difficult is it to just ask one of the assistants to touch base with Bear every so often? It tells me that Ray doesn't really want Bear to play which is even more absurd to me. How do you not want Mr. Basketball to play basketball when you're short on warm bodies. The guy won 3 consecutive 5A State Titles, had his coach calling him one of the best basketball players he's ever seen and avg 18 points and 15boards. Just spelling Borchert, Roq and FSF for 10 minutes a game drastically improves the whole team. I could see Ray being skeptical if the roster he originally had in mind WHEN HE TOLD WILSON HE COULD PLAY was all still intact and there wasn't enough minutes for everyone already. But since that promise was given to Bear the following players can not get a single minute of basketball time for MSU this year. Dre Applewhite, Fallou Ndoye, Travis Daniels, Jalen Steele and Wendell Lewis. 5 basketball players are not getting any minutes and Ray doesn't want to add Mr. Basketball? Seriously WHAT THE 17?!

My feeling is Ray is skeptical of adding a guy to the team that doesn't have basketball as his #1 priority. No insider knowledge, just the feeling I get.

I promise you Ray wants to add Wilson to the lineup.

Then sac up and go talk to Mullen already. We shouldn't be having this conversation on January 14th 2014. This whole thing is a circus show right now. Can we get the monkeys riding the dogs to do the halftime entertainment too?

Yeah I got the opinion that is it out of Ray's hands and Ray came across as giving a very good explanation that made it sound like he would sooner Bear not play then to jeopardize his football career. He then got a rousing ovation from the crowd. I was always pro-Ray but this seals the deal for me the guy really cares about his players and doesn't want to do anything that could hurt any of their chances to succeed at other things if that is where their heart is. Just a complete 180 from Stansbury and the head cases he worked with.

I also have a feeling that some people think that Ray has a lot more control over this situation than he actually does. DR is going to play if Mullen wants him to play, and Ray knows that walking over to Dan's office and saying please is not going to change a thing

Well, Ray's the one talking to the press to get to Mullen. I think Dan will feel the pressure and let him play soon.

His grades may be so-so, and both coaches are still debating whether it is good for him to play or if it would risk him being ineligible for either sport. I have no idea. He may have a 4.0, but it makes sense. If his grades are fine, Mullen is probably on the fence and Ray is wanting his help. If his grades are suspect, both coaches would be very leery about it. Either way, it explains why they wouldn't talk about it in the media.

You old ******* just can't stand it that MSU hired Rick Ray to coach basketball. You'll take every shot at him you can to make him look bad. I'm sure he and Bear and Mullen all want to be on the same page before anything goes forward. Sometimes I just think some of you can't stand the fact that Ray is _ _ _ _ _. smh

The point of my initial post was Ray was saying that Bear wouldn't have the luxury of having a catch up semester. He never indicated his grades were an issue, only said that he didn't we any to put Bear in a situation where he could fall behind and becoming ineligible to play football this fall. He could be. 4.0 student but with no time to ever study either during football or baseball season even a regular student would find it difficult to stay ahead. Kind of like having a full-time job( which essentially he would have playing two sports) the whole time you are attending school when other kids don't have to because they have a part-time job( play one sport).

Help me out here. I'm on mobile and can't tell who you responded to. I have been critical of Ray. I'm 29. Not sure of that counts as an old ******. I want Ray to succeed. He is the coach at MSU and a damn likeable guy.
