Why have a signing day?

Why not just allow schools to go ahead and sign a player when he commits? The "signing day" could be the deadline for signing rather than the first day recruits could sign.

It would put a quick end to a lot of the ******** that goes on in recruiting. At the very least they need an early signing period for football in July.</p>

Because people who play football aren't the same type of humans as those that play other sports - we can't have an early signing period or post season tournaments.

Or - somewhere in the NCAA, Larry Tempelton has a relative with some pull.

That's my thing. I like the idea of a single signing day in the spring semester, but I think they need an early one as well, and don't allow official visits before the early signing period. That way, guys like Carr or others that know early on without a doubt where they want to go can go ahead and sign so that they can avoid the calls the rest of the year and focus on school. For those that are really undecided, they sign in February after official visits.

Also, it'll help eliminate some of the BS with guys that commit just to hold a spot. If someone is doing that, then an early signing period would at least tell the coaches that they aren't really committed.
