I record all of the SC games although I never really re-watch the ones that SC loses. But I was trying to fall asleep last night and figured that may help. haha.
So I went back and sort of fast forwarded through the end of the A&M, Bama, and other games we lost. I guarantee you we lose at least 4 games specifically because of the inability to avoid sacks at crucial times in games. And I don't just mean one sack. Multiple sacks. On at least two occasions, right after the sack, the camera showed Beamer and he is just yelling into the headset.
Yes our offensive line was horrible. Horrible. But Shula's plays just take way too long to develop. Especially in crucial situations where we only needed 3 or 4 yards.
I would almost bet that one of the reasons that Beamer is going to Briles is specifically because he was just sick and tired of seeing repeated sacks late in games when it is only 3rd and 4. That won't happen under Briles. Even with a poor offensive line. Now, maybe it will be a lot of incompletions. But I can promise that SC will not lead the league in sacks.
PS - I do know LaNorris did hold onto the ball too long sometimes. I get that. But he is still coached. I bet he won't do that under Briles. Plus, a lot of the sacks I saw were just the play call being a play that takes too long to develop. LaNorris can't get rid of the ball quickly if no receiver is running a quick 4 yard route.
