the rankings are for THIS YEAR, not last year. their record and performance last year is not indicitive of their potential this year.

if last year's performance is what determined polls for this year, then KU would start the year at #1 in the basketball polls...and that wont happen.
...previous year's performance plays a part, but only a part.
