Why is Cohen held to a different standard than Mullen?

If you remove Cohen's first year, which is fair since in baseball the new coach has virtually no control over recruiting or the makeup of the team, you see these results:<div>
</div><div>Year 1 -- no postseason</div><div>Year 2 -- surprisingly a top 15 team</div><div>Year 3 -- fail to meet expectations, just barely making the postseason</div><div>
</div><div>Obviously we can't be sure of how this year ends up for Cohen yet, but that's the most likely scenario.</div><div>
</div><div>So when Cohen and Mullen have done pretty much the same thing, and the situations are the same (we play in the best conference and are close to the bottom in money and facilities), why does everyone here seem to worship Mullen yet hate Cohen?</div>

People feel that because for a while we were a top 15 baseball school, every year we aren't is a disgrace. Likewise, we're historically terrible in football, so having a coach bringing us up to mediocre is a godsend to them.

Personally, I think they're both doing a pretty damn good job, and both have plenty of room for improvement in winning close games.

100x better than Cohen. Like it or not, Croom left MSU in decent shape (just look at the number of draft picks we've had over the last two years).

Also, Cohen has never finished at .500 in SEC play.

But, it is much, much, much more difficult to build a successful football program quickly than a successful baseball program.

Because Cohen is going to finish 12th in the SEC for the third time in four years? Not sure I understand...

that our baseball team is close to the bottom in money and facilities? I guarantee you money isn't the issue. Cohen is one of the highest paid coaches and so are his assistants. We travel as well as anyone, stay in as nice of hotels as anyone, eat as well as anyone, and have as good of equipment as anyone. As for facilities, it's a given that Dudy is getting old but it's still better than Florida, Kentucky, Vandy, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Auburn. And no baseball program has access to a facility like the Palmeiro Center. They may have an indoor facility but not like ours. And have you seen our locker room since its been renovated? It's one of the best.<div>
</div><div>I'm just pointing out that Cohen has far more resources than Mullen has compared to their respective sports.</div>

In all likelihood, we are going to be 3 games back of UT after this weekend. We must play Bama on the road (the Race to the Bottom Series) and Vandy took two of three from us, so they have the tie breaker if there is one for last place.<div>

Their history tells them they should compete at the highest level of football. Ours says we should be able to compete at a very high level in baseball.

We definitely took 2 of 3 from Vandy last week.<div>
</div><div>Avoiding sweeps is the key to reaching Hoover in the SEC, and we've done that so far.</div>

Like it or not, Mullen inherited a MSU program with more NFL talent coming up through it than at any point in the last 20 years.

Derek Sherrod (1st round pick)
Fletcher Cox (1st round pick) committed
Charles Mitchell 4 year starter
Jonathan Banks committed
Pernell McPhee committed
Chris White committed
Josh Boyd committed
Plus, Cameron Lawrence, Gabe Jackson, Tyler Russell, etc..

All those guys are SEC caliber players and/or NFL draft picks.

How is that not leaving us in a good spot?

Connor Powers was a good one.<div>
</div><div>After that, it's....Jet Butler, Ryan Collins, Cody Freeman, Tyler Whitney and bunch of other guys who will never even make it to AA, much less the Majors.</div><div>
</div><div>Cohen essentially had to build a team from scratch and made us a top 15 by year 3, or year 2 if you remember that he had no control over 2009.</div><div>
</div><div>Yes, we've blown some games this year and will likely barely make the postseason, just like Dan Mullen did this past year.</div>

...Cohen doesn't have that luxury.

If Mullen loses 3 games in a row to Ole Miss, he's gone.

If Cohen loses 3 games in a row to Ole Miss, everybody is pissed for a couple of days, but he has 0% bearing on whether Cohen keeps his job.

..plus you're wrong.

If OM, of all people, screwed up our potential perfect regular season, the MSU fanbase would become so hysterical, Mississippi's new governor (have no idea who he is) would be forced to dispatch the national guard to Oktibbeha County.

It's great that Mullen has beat UM every year, but the reason everyone is on board with him is that he's won 2 straight bowl games for only the 2nd time in our history and taken us to 2 straight bowls for only the 3rd time.</p>

because we have lost 2 out of 3 series to the 7th, 8th, and 10th best teams in the nation? And then on the road at Auburn? We have irrational and illogical fans.

..for the last 70 years, the only viable requirement for a MSU football coach to possess longevity in his job is to consistently beat Ole Miss.

Everything else, whether for good or bad, is just ceremonial pageantry.

..if OM ruined a potential perfect season for a #1 ranked MSU (if MSU ever enters the Egg Bowl undefeated, MSU will be ranked #1 in the nation going into the game), all hell would break out in Starkville.

It's take a bare minimum of common sense to figure that one out.
