At USC, Matt Barkley has an o-line that has at least four guys that are going to play in the NFL. We have the "Four Horsemen" on our o-line. USC has some freakishly good receivers that can catch the ball and run and have the size to make plays on jump balls. Our WR's aren't that bad either, but they aren't exactly USC caliber. And USC also has a guy named Joe McKnight who other teams have to respect, which takes the pressure off of the QB. We have AD running behind said crappy o-line.
If we stuck Tyler Russell out there, it would be a disaster, and it would probably ruin him for the rest of his career. Just like Omarr Conner.
Think about it- first of all, he needs to put some muscle on his frame. He looks like a twig. Russell needs this year if nothing else to get physically ready for the SEC. He would be going up against SEC defenses- which are probably the best and fastest in the SEC, going up against people like Nick Saban. And he would be doing this behind a below average on a wooly day o-line, and with WR's who seem to have a hard time getting open, and only one who has shown me that he can be a legit play maker in Bumphis, and he's a Fr., and then have some decent to good RB's.
MSU people keep waiting on the "QB savior" or the "real deal" and then when they have a bad game, they throw them on the scrap heap. The only QB I can remember in the past 15 years or so coming in as a true Fr. coming in right away and playing at a satisfactory level as the starter was Peyton Manning, and he's one of the top 10 QB's in football history. Guys like Matthew Stafford struggled, and Tim Tebow was reduced to a role player as a freshman. Eli Manning was a back up as a RS Fr. And as far as Wes Carroll, that's about as good as you can realistically hope for, and he was very limited in what he could do.
That said, what we need to do is RS Tyler if at all possible, and then let him be the back up to Cameron Newton (fingers crossed) for the next two years, and then let him start as a junior. QB is one of those postions that a player has to be developed. It's not like WR or RB where you can get a guy like a Bumphis and you can expect him to see significant playing time as a freshman.
And as far as Barkley, I don't know very much about him. I do suspect that he is exremely mature, he probably is a freak of nature, and he probably has been very well coached. And unless we land someone with all of those credentials, we're probably never going to have a Fr. QB be an impact guy right away.
And for those looking for a QB savior- Cameron Newton is probably about as close as we're going to come, should we land him.
