I think it's a combination of a few factors.
I'm admittedly not an X's and O's guy. Never have been. Why is our pass defensw ranked near the bottom in the nation?
Scheme? Talent? Obama?
We have some guys who are playing substantial minutes after not playing a ton of big minutes the last couple years. Redmond is only in like his 19th game total, and experience is huge.
Schematically, I think it has had a lot to do with the way games have gone down. For example, the majority of LSU's passing yards were when we were playing a loose cover 4/prevent after the game should have been out of doubt, and that's not even counting the toss pass they ran in the first quarter pre-goal line stand. Similar things happened in the Texas A&M game.
To me the only major anomalies were UAB and Kentucky. In the UAB game, we were playing a team with a new coaching staff which makes game planning extremely difficult. We went into the game expecting them to really focus on running the football, and they showed they had something else up their sleeve. We were playing much more vanilla at that point, and we didn't overly adjust because we really didn't need to, and the numbers reflect that. Against Kentucky, we showed what I thought was a lot more issues. With that being said, alot of those yards could have been prevented had we executed. The first Kentucky touchdown comes to mind, which turned from no YAC with a solid tackle into a long td pass.
I think it's all a combination of these factors, and I really like our ability in the red zone. With our ability to stop the run with 5 or 6 in a box, we have a significant advantage when the field gets tight. I definitely feel like we are kind of adventure in the back end of the defense, but like some of our individual play makers and their ability to get a stop when it counts.
