Why is playing basketball in a dome worse?

I just can't figure out how someone that spent 95% of their childhood/young life shooting basketball outdoors is the same shooter with a roof over their heads but worse with a roof slightly higher.

These players are used to playing in pretty close quarters and smaller arenas. Then all of a sudden, they are in an 80,000 seat football stadium playing a basketball game. The goals look a lot different. I remember them saying at the SEC tournament this year, the first day, all teams shot a combined 17% from outside the perimeter. It takes getting used to.

The roof has nothing to do with it. It's the fact that in typical arenas, there is a crowd and seating directly behind the goal. But in a dome, there is a lot more dead space behind the backboard.

I think it's a myth that's become part of the lexicon that everyone's accepted as truth.

Where did you play outdoor basketball? I know in my yard, there some trees probably not much further behind the goal than the seats at an arena are. Plus my backboard wasn't see-through, so when I was shooting I didn't really even see the trees.

There is a huge difference between shooting in a stadium and an arena. It's the lack of an immediate background behind the goal. Just like going from the tin gym to the Hump... Trust me on this one, the commentators know what they are talking about.

Ever wonder why the wall is painted green in center field directly behind the pitcher?

when we beat bama and was shooting a few with gholar before anybody else got out there. First time I had ever shot in an arena, and it is tough for the first few shots. I airballed the first 3 and then went on to shoot fairly normal except a random one that was waayyyy off would show every now and then. It is much different and makes the goal seem as if you are shooting into something much smaller. You tend to short arm everything, or at least i did, trying to compensate for it seeming as if you are right on top of the goal.</p>

Just wondering if we could put up a maroon and white backboard and use it to our advantage at home. Sort of like Boise's blue turf.

Since it's there so the hitter can distinguish the ball coming at him, primarily for safety reasons.

I hated playing at St Stanislaus. If I recall, the court was "upstairs" or something. Everytime coming down the court, if felt and sounded like we were going to fall through the floor.

It did affect shooting.

I was at Reliant last year for the sweet 16 and got on the court after the games were over the first day and it is amazing the distance behind the goal to the upper decks that you see in the backdrop. Since Reliant is a football arena there are thousands of temporary seats set up over what makes up most of the normal field area and all the seats are at a very low rise. On top of that the court is then raised up from field level about 3 feet. We were on row 26 and eye level was still below the rim when standing. I would guess we were close to 50 yards from the court. All that combines to make a very difficult depth perception for the shooter.

folks with seats behind the basket wouldn't enjoy that
