The helmet thing is 1) a dead ball foul, and 2) happened after the clock expired.

In either case, that gets accessed after UT's penalty. So best case for UT, its one play from the 16 yard line instead of the 1 yard line....which is still way better than what they ended up with. Still, I think you don't make the helmet penalty after time expires.

I rewinded it on DVR.. one guy had tried to pick it up but didn't (as the guy is taking off his helmet).. then another TN guy jumped on the ball just as dude is slamming his helmet to the ground.

because we did this same **** after the Bama guy took his helmet off when they blocked the UT field goal last year.

Taking your helmet off is a dead ball penalty. There can not be a dead ball penalty with the clock at zero. EVEN if the other team had a penalty and there is going to be another play. You can not call a dead ball penalty at the end of the game. And yes, theoretically you could take out someone's knee at the end of the game and there is nothing the refs can do about it. Now with all the **** that mattered going on at the end of that game can everyone stop blathering on about a guy taking his $#!+*+@ helmet off?

There can be a dead ball foul at any time until the game is over, regardless of the status of the clock.<div>

but this happened a few years ago in the NFL (i realize the rules might not be the same) and they assessed the penalty and it changed the outcome of the game

ETA: it was dwayne rudd in a browns-chiefs game
