<span style="font-weight: bold;">1. Memphis is the most underachieving school in major college football.</span>

Think about it. They are in the middle of one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in America. They are in a city with lots to offer (Beale Street, culture, stabbings, etc.) and they are in a cracker jack conference, yet for the most part they don't care about football.

Memphis is a lot like Jackson: Not only would catvet be scared to go to Memphis, the inner city thugs are their fanbase (just like JSU). But just like their massive alumni, that only works for their basketball program. Their fans are Tennessee/Alabama/LSU/Arkansas/flavor of the day fans during football season, and that's unfortunate. There are probably some "MSU football fans" that turn to Memphis during basketball season.

17 them.

Did you know that Memphis defeated both Peyton and Eli Manning during their respective senior seasons? That's a pretty cool fact. The way I see it, there are three other schools just like Memphis in major college football. Houston, Louisville and Cincinnati.

Louisville and Cincy were fortunate enough to head to the Big East, and both have played in BCS bowl games. Houston has had some good teams recently, and will probably have a shot at the Big XII in the next couple of years. But Memphis? Because they have disregarded football (firing their most successful coach and hiring a relative unknown comes to mind), they are stuck with pipe dreams of the Big East.

Heres a news flash, Tiger High, if the dominoes fall and conference realignment hits the fan, you'll be joining USM in the Sun Belt.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">2. That's a hell of a deal on Groupon.</span>

I love Groupon. My wife and I have enjoyed eating at great restaurants for a great deal. If you live in Memphis, you may have seen a great deal. 2 tickets to any Memphis Tiger home game for $10. *

*-except for the Thursday night opener against Mississippi State, we're going to charge $50 each for them.

I have no problem with the premise of charging more for a bigger game, but 1000% more? That's a little over the top - and par for the course.

You see, Memphis has been using us, Ole Miss and occasionally Tennessee as their bitches for several years. Remember 2000? We paid premium prices to set in 140 degree heat to watch State kick their ***. And oh yeah, the visiting team locker room happened to have AC trouble that day, and they forgot to make signage to change their water from $3 to $4 so they used a sharpie. They didn't forget the boxes to collect cowbells though.

This is why I hate playing at Memphis. Its the only road game where I feel like I'm being gouged. If all of their tickets were $35 and ours was $50 - no big deal, but when you can buy tickets 2 for $10 to every game except ours - that's ridiculous.

Guess they use the extra to fund their thug basketball program.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">3. Let's face it, they just suck. </span>

Their fans suck. Their stadium sucks. And their team sucks.

From Memphis fans talking smack in a game they are 27 point underdogs to the guy who screamed Go Tigers during the moment of silence for Keffer McGee in the 1997 opener.

The feeling that you need to be wearing kevlar to attend a game at the Liberty Bowl. We won't have this problem this game, but remember the cluster17 that was the '07 Liberty Bowl. Could barely move in the concourse all while MPD was in sniper towers around the stadium.

Memphis may have been the worst team in major college football last year. They had to play their best game against Middle Tennessee (a 6-7 Sun Belt team) while MTSU played their worst game to get their one win. In 7 of their 12 games last year, they gave up 40+ points.

And all indications are that they will be worse this year.

A former co-worker of mine is a MSU fan in football, and a Tiger fan in basketball. I used to get pissed at him back in the Lawrence Roberts days when he would show up one day wearing Tiger blue and the next wearing Maroon.</p>

and the kicker is, he was probably the most qualified. Memphis should thank God for Detroit.

To elect Prince Mongo. Hell, he'd probably have been a veritable Dick Hackett compared to the recent mayoral performances there.

Regarding the tickets it is the law of supply and demand. Memphis is on the MS border and thus there are a lot of MS people in the vicinity that want to see their team play. Demand for tickets to such games is much higher than usual thus the higher prices. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It stinks but I can't really blame them. I assume their own fans have to pay the higher prices too.

while I get what you are saying, is a pretty tough sell when the stadium seats 62,000.<div>
</div><div>It's gotta stink for their own fans (if there are many). It's the home opener and it's the most expensive game of the year. According to this article, they're actually having to give tickets away to their own fanbase:</div><div>
</div><div>http://www.commercialappe...-say-stadium-half-empty/</div><div>
</div><div>And to keep in the spirit of this thread, I'll say that Memph State sucks for acting like it's our job to sell their crappy tickets, and for having sports writers take up the torch in support of such a ***** move. From the article above:</div><div>

Where's all that passion I've been hearing so much about?</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: inherit; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5em; ">And don't tell me that the game is on a Thursday night, and it's on TV anyway, and blah blah blah blah.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: inherit; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5em; ">Alabama would have put 40,000 in the Liberty Bowl. Sure it was a basketball conference, but of all the charter members of that conference that have football teams, they (along with Tulane, a far more academic school) are the only ones not in a BCS conference. They have a good size student body and are in a large metropolitan area, but they haven't done anything to improve their football program and expect us to give them half their ticket revenue for the year. That is why they suck.

What they are trying to do is entice the local MSU fans that don't have season tickets to State to buy season tickets to Memphis with $100 season ticket prices. I don't care enough about any seeing any other team on their schedule to do this, and I don't care anything about watching Memphis.

Good grief. Taking a visiting team to task for not taking over a visiting stadium? On a Thursday nite?

If you want to see our enthusiasm take a look at our home ticket sales. Its hard to get excited enough to drive to memphis on a weeknight for a televised game against an opponent as pitiful as tiger high.

my reasons for having a Mongo for Mayor campaign poster featuring him crossing the street in goggles, trench coat, no shoes, and carrying a rubber chicken in one hand and a paper bag in the other. He had also written a note on there about rats dancing in the street and chickens coming from Zambodia. Best campaign poster ever.

One thread whining about not going to be invited to the Big 12. Right next to it is another thread whining about how we aren't going to fill up THEIR OWN stadium for them Thursday night.

That's pretty much all you need to know about Memphis fans and why they suck. They constantly ***** about what they don't have while turning a blind eye to the fact they do this to themselves. Winning does not come first - you have to invest in a program (money AND attendance) before you can expect a return. This is a lost concept on their fan base. Instead, they expect a BCS conference or a billionaire alum to save them from their own laziness. They need a Greg Bryne or Scott Stricklin in the worst way.

That's because Alabama's mouth-breathing sidewalk alums wouldn't have the good sense to opt for better tickets AT THE SAME PRICE. That guy is a douche.
