Why recruiting doesn't matter

OLE MISS HAS BEATEN US IN RECRUITING 8 OF THE LAST 10 YEARS, but there's a lot of other numbers that matter much more.

based on scout.com numbers. I threw Texas in for comparison. Yes,
Texas that just FIRED all its coaches after ONE bad season. Loaded with
talent every year.

Beating Ole Miss is not a big accomplishment. We need to beat the Arkansas/Auburn's of the world and work our way up to beating the Bama and LSU's of the world. Recruiting is what will get us there. Having a class this year that is below where we think it should be is not the end of the world. We just need to come back strong next year.

I like the fact we picked up Coach Collins. That guy has been on the inside of Bama's recruiting machine. Heknows how the game is played on the next level, which we apparently have not figured out yet. Next year's class (after another good season) will be very very good.

but your thoughts on recruiting are just flat out wrong.

Recruiting is the second most important factor in a successful program, next to coaching. Yes, Ole Miss is beating us in recruiting this year. The reason why it's a big deal, is because they're getting guys that we want.

At some point, we're going to need to secure those types of recruits (the CJs, Whiteheads, Singeltons, Brassells of the state) if we ever plan on making a run at the SEC West.

Yes, we can beat Ole Miss without those guys... but beating Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas without them is a lot tougher.

If you want a comparison on recruiting and great teams... go take a look at the top 25 recruiting rankings over the last 10 years. After you find out the USC, Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, etc... are the the ones consistently in the top 10, you'll realize that the reason they're playing BCS bowl games all of the time is because they have better players. When you put better players with better coaches, you win championships.

We'll never out-recruit Bama, LSU, Ohio State, etc... it won't be allowed to happen period. But we need to get as close as we possibly can and use the TCU/Boise method of trying to find the best atheletes that fit our system. That is one advantage of the Spread Offense. A good example is Dak Prescott. He might not be a 5 star QB ratings wise but he fits our system very well, much better than his 3 stars show.

I completely disagree. While recruiting may not be the most important thing, it is certainly a very significant part of becoming a great SEC team.

I believe how good a team is, is mostly made up of Coaching ability and the caliber of players. I'm pretty sure we've just about maxed out our coaching ability at MSU.

with the best coaches available you have a powerhouse program. That's what Mullen and we as fans want to achieve. And I believe we have superior coaching and player development right now as opposed to even most in the SEC. With our coaching staff we can have a very good program with overall talent a notch below but your ceiling is always set by the max your players can give you even when your coaching is top notch. On the other hand OM will definitely improve themselves with some of the players they are getting this year but I don't believe currently they are even getting out of the talent they have what they should be. With their schedule to only win 4 games and play that bad on defense shows that something somewhere is really wrong.

if you just want to win 5-7 games, beat Mississippi and occasionallybe one of 70 teams to get to a bowl...<div>

and it's a big reason why we were successful this past season. We got 17 or 18 contributors from that class which is excellent. It was a nice mix of HS and JUCO players. And other than the O-line it had really good balance. That class finished around 20th in the nation which is good enough to compete for championships if you do it every year..... as long as you have good coaches and a good QB.

There are people ready to jump off the ledge because of what CJ Johnson may or may not do.

There are people on both sides that are so obsessed with the other in the rivalry, they are PAYING the rivals web sites to read their recruiting information.

For what? He's not going to make or break either program. Yes recruiting is very important, but damn, to lose sleep over it is crazy.

I find it particularly funny that Ole Miss folks have been pounding their chests about two straight cotton bowls and their great recruiting classes, yet they have a worse record in the last five years than we do.

The 2 cotton bowl trips were a result of having good players. Mullen has proven he can win with average talent. Like others have said though, if MSU wants to beat the teams in the west besides Ole Miss, it takes good to great players. I think the point is Mullen could be the second coming of Knute Rockne, but he is still going to have to have good to great players to take the next step andconsistently finish in the top half of the SEC. I'm not saying MSU isn't bringing in good players, just pointing out why some people are pissed off about the possibility of losing out on some top MS recruits.

I'm seeing some people pissed about the way CJ's recruitment has played out, along with a few of our other in-state commits inexplicably defecting, but everyone here is properly stating that our program is going to be successful with or without CJ. We would likely be that much better with him as you are talking about a player that completely dominated the AL/MS all-star game but we will be successful regardless.

we were absolutely no worse than 6th and probably 5th as I believe at the end of the year we were better than SC. And its pissed off about possibly losing out on some top MS recruits that were verbally committed to us and flipped for no "apparent" good reason.
