Why State will be better in 2010 than Mississippi....

let's examine shall we?

Defense? I believe this is basically a wash between the two teams. Neither team has a real advantage over the other to make a huge difference.

Then why will State be better you ask? It's simple- offense.

<span style="text-decoration:underline">Mississippi's offense</span>- this unit will be in the lower third of the SEC this season. New QB, new RB carrying the majority of the load, and a decent but unspectacular group of WR's. The loss of Pat Patterson hurt this group. Offensive line? Bradley Sowell is being touted as the best one of this group. I rest my case.

Nutt runs the I and mixes in some "Wild Rebel". He doesn't have the OL to move people around when he needs to run the ball like you have to in the I. And he doesn't have the QB that scares anyone enough making throws to help back-up the defense either. This is going to be a decent offense at best. While overall stats may be cosmetically ok at the end of the season, in SEC games only the Rebels will be in the bottom 1/3 at season's end.

Are they going to be terrible? No. Will they be as good as the last couple of years? No

<span style="text-decoration:underline">State's offense</span>

State has an improved OL from last season and is also in year 2 of Mullen's scheme. This unit has depth and will be very good in 2010. This unit also runs very few I-formation plays and doesnt have to push the defense backward. It does more angle blocking which is easier for lineman

State will be better at the WR position. Bumphis was very good for a true freshman but Heavens was lost. Heavens will be much a much better player with a year under his belt now. As will Berry who adjusted from juco last season. And by better, I mean- running better routes, blocking much better, catching the ball more consistently, and knowing their QB's alot better.

State will not be as good overall at the RB position. But with the shift of the offense more on the QB's shoulders, they don't have to be. About 100 of all those carries Dixon got last year will go to Relf this season. And again- when was the last time State didnt have a pretty good RB in the backfield? We will definitely have a couple good enough to make our offense work.

State will be better as a whole at the QB position. Tyson Lee was a smart player and threw the ball very accurately up to 25 yards- however, his lack of vision in the pocket, lack of ability to throw the ball deep, and propensity to turn the ball over at the worst of times erased all the good things he actually did.
State is going to be run-heavy again in 2010, but the load will be shared more by the QB. You are going to see a ball-control, option based offense that throws quick screens and play-action passes. If Relf can stay healthy and throw it even decently, State's offense will indeed be a top-half SEC offense. If he can't, life will suck in Starkville. But Relf is the top running QB returning in the SEC, and one of the top in the nation. He will get his yards this Fall.
You will not see alot of Tyler Russell, but you will see some because he has to get a little experience. But just like Tyson Lee turning it over when he was pressured, Russell did the same thing in the Spring Game. And he even knew in the Spring he wasnt going to get hit- this Fall that won't be the case. If Russell has to play a significant amount in 2010, State won't be in a bowl game. He is not ready, nor does he have the WR's to support him to lead a pass-first Spread offense.

in summary, State's offense is going to look like Fla's under Tebow- lots of QB runs, numerous RB's getting carries, misdirection and play-action passes, and hot routes in the middle of the field to beat the blitz...I predict State to average 400 yards a game- 235 on the ground, 165 in the air

State will not be as good overall at the RB position.

And really, Relf is one of the top running QB in the nation? Can we clarify that? Do you mean like Top 10? Because I can probably name 10 right off the top of my head. Yeah, he ripped Ole Miss up last year, but arent we jumping the gun a little? I hope you are right but it is going to take a little more for me to buy in to that statement.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned hardly at all is how much will Bumphis be involved in the running game? I know we didn't use him much last year, but he was a true freshman and I doubt he had time to learn the whole offense, plus we had Dixon getting a lot of carries. Will we see Bumphis playing a poor man's Percy Harvin like we'll see Relf playing a poor man's Tim Tebow?

I'd like to see that. Nesbitt is better of course, but in the BCS conferences, there aren't 9 more QB's better running the ball than Relf

We've finally got some return men, a kicker and a punter. Really need to improve coverage.

It won't be Crxxm bad or Vandy bad, but it'll be close. I have them at 5-6 going into the Egg Bowl, and I'd be shocked if they went 3-0 vs. VU, UT, and UK. I could easily see them losing 2 of those games.

as it pertains to the offense. Still too many unknowns. I don't know how anyone could over- or under- estimate us on that side of the ball. the only know is that we lost Dexter...the rest we have no real idea.

eliminate a few of the turnovers, which in no way can be speculated on heading into the season, Lee did a pretty good job last year. If he sticks the ball out over the goalline against LSU, we are in a bowl game.

He just had a handful of bad plays that made his season much worse than it should have been.

Despite all their problems they will easily edge out:<div>
</div><div>Jacksonville State</div><div>Tulane</div><div>Vanderbilt</div><div>Fresno State</div><div>Louisiana-Lafayette</div><div>
</div><div>And at least one of Kentucky or TN. Probably both. TN could be the second worst team in the conference this year behind Vandy.

not so much last year, but he was a threat that had to be accounted for. Nutt can do things on offense if he's got a stud or two to do it with, but I just don't see it this year. Bolden? Grandy? That's no McFadden or McCluster. He likes those Irish I guess.

You were still promoting him over "one of the top running qb's" in the nation.

I won't be sold on Relf until he shows that he knows when to option. When he came in last year, he kept 95% of the time; and he was clearly winded after 7-8 carries and then tyson would have to come in or the drive would stall.

That said, it looks like Low copied your appraisal of the quarterbacks sans a few swaps.</p>

QB- no experience at all, and what little there is has been bad
RB - Bolden should be a decent RB, but he didn't get the job done last year
OL - Lost most of the best players. Young and inexperienced. That's not good.
WR - A few decent receivers, but very little production. And none look to be future stars.

I think your offense will be better in the future. Nutt is a pretty good offensive coach. But I see a lot of very low scoring games for you this fall.

Jake Locker?? Much better QB, but not the runner Relf is- Locker had 112 carries, 388 yards...Relf had 500 yards on 76 carries
Pryor is outstanding, but when Relf gets the same amount of carries as Pryor this season, I'd expect similar numbers (162- 779)

And the list goes on and on...Relf is going to run the ball probably 175 times in 2010- and I'm betting he goes for at least 800 yards...and that will be good enough to be one of the top QB rushers in the nation.

Jax State nearly beat FSU last year and played Georgia Tech closer than you did the last two years. We all know what Fresno State can do. If we finish non-conference better than 2-2, I'll be happy. Vandy always plays us tough. We beat Alabama about as often as you beat LSU. Arkansas is a loss. LSU and UT on the road are loses.Under my way of thinkinganything 6-6 or better for us is a very very successful year. I could see us going 4-8, especially now that y'all are going to be finishing in the top half of the SEC this year. Nutt is a miracle worker if hewins more than 7 games.

for Ole Miss. Vincent Sanders? No, I saw him play, he's not that guy. A solid receiver, but not "that" guy. Maybe Grandy? I don't think so. They won't have one until they get Brassell and Singleton in there.

bowl position but UM should already be secure for a bowl by then for obvious reasons. I do think we will be a slightly better team overall this year with the potential to be a very good team in 2011. Don't the reb's loose quite a bit of their defense this year? I'm too lazy to look it up but I seem to recall they are going to be heavy senior laden on defense similar to the way their offense setup last year.

Nutt is a good coach and has some good coaches surrounding him so he will get all he can get out of the talent he has; however, it has been a long time since he has had this little talent on offense. When SEC defenses know you can not hurt them in certain areas they pin their ears back and come after you and that makes a bad situation even worse as we all know well from experience.

if you lose to them or Vanderbilt, you're in trouble. Fresno will be tough. While I don't necessarily agree with all the talk about how Tennesseewill be the next coming of the bad news bears, I do think they're quite beatable.

I am not surprised you think we will suck there and we may...but we have some reason for some optimism in some spots. In others it is a "who the hell knows."

QB-Certainly no experience but could it be worse? Maybe...but considering the offense was geared toward Snead early it amplified the issue. I think Stanley is going to be serviceable but not asked to do much, so I think overall the impact of less than stellar QB could be minimized compared to last year. But...like I said...it may not. Just an unknown. I think the "wild Rebel" will have to be relied on heavily in some games. Finding a guy to do it will be key to taking pressure off Stanley or Cotton and the RBs. I think mackey being able to do it with some success is the key to us winning more than 6.

RB-Bolden is serviceable. I think we have some other possible impacts there but we will see. Enricky has made a jump...i hope it relates to the field this fall.

OL-Our OL will be better IMO because our 2 OT slots are solidified. While he was a whipping boy last year most folks that paid attention know that Sowell was playing pretty well at the end of the year. Massie should be more than solid after being forced into service. Rishaw Johnson will be a very good OG...was playing well at the end of the year. Center and the other slot are going to be new guys but with some experience in Hawkins and Washington. That is a little scary...but we actually have a good deal of experience up front in the first 5. After that is young....seems to be some talent there but young.

WR-Need some guys to step up. I think Grandy is going to be a very productive guy this year.

Because if we are talking about Relf's ability to succeed in the system, it conflicts with your argument against Dixon being one of the best RB in the country last year. I honestly havent watched all of those QBs enough to know how they stack up from a pure talent standpoint, but having watched Locker a decent amount, I think he could match Relf in our system. How many of Locker's runs were designed running plays? Same for many of the other QBs. Another thing you aren't considering is the effect of sacks on a lot of the other QB's totals and averages. We didn't put Relf in many situations that would result in a sack last year. These other QBs are dropping back a lot more.

Moreover, going back to Dixon, we do not know what effect losing Dixon will have on Relf's ability to pick up yardage. You almost never talk about this when talking about Relf and I am not that surprised since you werent the biggest Dixon fan. Why do you think the keeper was always so open on the read plays? Why do you think Relf had those gaping holes up the middle? It was because the defense was watching Dixon.

aGAIN, I HOPE Relf lives up to your hype, but I am taking a wait and see approach.

but I would not consider that an easy game. Maybe their program has fallen off, but I wouldn't chalk it up as an automatic W.

Pryor or Relf??? Of course Pryor, but Relf will probably match his production in 2010. Why? the system they play in. Those other QB's had sacks? Well, when Relf plays entire ballgames and get 3 times as many carries this season, I don't think sacks are going to matter? Do you really think they will?

I don't see how anything conflicts with my argument about Dixon. Dixon was a good RB that benefitted by playing in a great system. Lots of times Dixon wasnt even touched until 5-6 yards past the LOS- and then his ability allowed him to make even longer runs by stiff-arming, running hard, and making good cuts. Thats why he had a great season.

"Why do you think the keeper was always so open on the read plays? Why do you think Relf had those gaping holes up the middle? It was because the defense was watching Dixon. "

on the flip side, if the backside DE or LB stays home to take the QB, then our OL outnumbers the defense at the point of attack, and our RB's will gash the defense with more long runs. Thats the beauty of the play and why we run the damn thing- it's hard as hell to stop. Defenses more times than not have to bring an extra defender into the box because they are outnumbered. And when they do that, we run something else. Dixon helped with this- but there is no reason our RB's won't be able to make this play very effective in 2010. The plays success had more to do with the fact we outnumber the defense more than the fact Dixon was the RB.

Also, go back and watch the Egg Bowl. Relf got alot more yards on the veer than he did the zone read. We were diving Elliot and making the DE take him, and the OLB was running to take pitch on Dixon like he was supposed to. Our tackles were sealing off the inside LB's and there was nobody left to get to Relf except the safety. Thats why Relf was getting 10 or more yards a carry alot of times. Dixon was basically no factor on this play, yet Relf was still getting alot of yards.

Yeah. It could be. And it will be.
I might . . . might be willing to bet that OM's QB passingproduction/efficiency will be better than MSU's this year. The sample size is so small on both sides, however, that it's really anyone's guess. Hell, I'm not really sure who will come out of fall camp as thestarter for either school (althoughobviously I have a pretty good idea).

I don't know. I know that our optimism has grown greatly...it's hard this time of year to see through the wool.

I do recall at the end of last season, significant posting by the Rebel faithful that they expected a down year, (due to players that they were losing, and gaps). Now their wool is probably getting thick also.

The shearing begins in 45 days.

I do think we will be slightly better. Good analysis. Baaa! Baaa!

Only thing that needs improving is having a healthy kickoff guy so we can get them in the endzone. The spring game wasn't **** to judge anyone by since it was a controlled scrimmage and not reflective of actual/real game conditions.
