Why the difference in athletic budget for MSU versus UM?

I noticed in the reports today that the UM athletic budget is about $6M more than MSU. It appears that they get about $5M more from football revenue. That seems like a big difference for two stadiums of similar size. Does their stadium have that many more luxury boxes? Is that where the difference comes from?

For football, y'all sell about 11,000 to our 7,500. You also charge significantly less than we charge our students.

student ticket revenues

state:
11k student tickets @ $7 each @ 7 home games= $539,000 vs.

om:
7.5k student tickets @ $84 football package = $630,000

**OM also slings student tickets in tri-sportpackages for$120 which covers baseball, football, and basketball. Interesting way of doing it, but pro's and con's definitely

those 4500 seats have a difference of approximately $200 between student tickets ($50/season) and reg. priced season tickets ($240/season). 4500 * 200 = 900K.

Not complaining, would be more than ok with paying more than that, but just trying to figure out facts.

I was not comparing regular prices to student ticket prices. I was comparing OM STUDENT to MSU STUDENT prices

Still $700,000 though. Plus their approximately 10,000 greater capacity is good for another $2,000,000. Add in that they have more luxury seating than we do and don't sell as many discounted season tickets, and a $5M difference in football revenues sounds about right.

No way should it cost less money to see an SEC football game than it does to get a freaking hair cut.

I don't have a problem charging the students an extremely low price to go to the game at all. I think 5 dollars is more than reasonable for a college student.

We get around 4 million a year from learfield but ole miss only gets around 2.4 from theirs with a jackson based company. I expected ole miss to have a matching deal similar to ours

Get a cut of the payout from the bowl, then the rest goes in the SEC pool? That may be part of it too.

Keep in mind that tuition includes something like $120/student/semester in "athletic fees" that go to subsidize student tickets to msu sports.

include the Colorado State game. Think about that for a second. We should raise student season tickets to AT LEAST $50.

Comparing their student ticket revenue (prices) to ours and thought it was interesting that they offer package multi-sports pricing. Curious as to why we don't. That is all

Your "math is fun" response seemed like you were mocking JimHalpert and showing there wasn't a huge difference between the student ticket revenues when there is a huge difference.

So a damn hamburger happy meal and a mickey D's sweet tea has pretty much an equivalent value to an SEC game? Are you nuts, Todd!?!
$5.00 will buy a student about 1 to 1 /2 beer today and I damn sure think if they can pay $25-$100 a night getting drunk, or getting fat on $5 pizza 3-4 times a week, then they can pay a measly $7 - $8 a game in 2010!!

it's not so much an issue of can/can't afford it. It's an issue of giving everyone an opportunity to go, and making the events attractive to go to. One of the best ways to do that is to keep the cost down.

I think that one thing that college students should get to do when they are in college is be able to go to the games at an affordable rate and enjoy them and be with their friends. I think that's a very important part of developing support for teams down the road.

There are plenty of other ways to get money without raising the student ticket prices.

Most high schoolgames cost $5-7. I think a college kid can afford $10 to go see a couple of SEC schools compete.</p>

on the whiskey they take into one game, than they will spend on the price of the entire SEC football season ticket.

Time to go up. $20 ain't no step...and I have 2 in school (i.e.--coming outta my pocket.)
