Why the hate for Kenny Payne?

The guy has experienced a national championship as a player, played in the NBA and has been an assistant at two major D-1 programs.

I'm not necessarily pressing him as the top choice, but I don't understand the contempt.

The guy has only been an ast coach for 7 years and has never has been a head coach. He is at the bottom of my list.

What make you think he is ready to take over an SEC program?

I was a senior at State at the time. And was sorely disappointed he went to UL.

But if I was a Parade All American and I had the chance to play for Denny Crum in the 80s, I would have done the same thing. I'm not going to hold a grudge against a guy who has had the chances he had in his life and took advantage of them.

accountable for a budget, has he ever had anybody accountable under him except for players, and he said FU to MSU in the past. Yeah, its in the past but there's plenty of candidates out there lots more qualified than him.

AS, You could have made your same argument against Dan Mullen. What do you think about him?

College football is different, schools like Florida and Oregon can hire an assistant who has been a coordinator at a big program because there are only so many D1 schools in football. In college basketball there are close to 350 D1 schools which mean there is a ton of guys with D1 head coaching experience and this is why schools like Illinois or Tennessee will never hire an assistant over someone with HC experience.

There is a lot of concern within the department about whether or not we want to get involved in the 'Worldwide Wes' family. That is, more than anything else, what Payne brings. I know that it is a reality that recruiting is dirty, college basketball maybe the worst, but we are doing a lot of research about those sorts of things on a handful of guys that I know we have researched and possibly even had the firm talk to.<div>
</div><div>Also, I do know we interviewed someone yesterday, but I do not know who it was. I hope to find out this afternoon, but you never know with the close-to-the-vest approach of Scott.</div>

Interesting you chose Illinois and Tennessee over literally any other programs... like Duke maybe? UCLA? Syracuse? Hell, even Memphis.

And that's not even necessarily true. Collins at Duke will get a good job before so-n-so who wins 20+ games at some mid major every year goods a good job. For every Cal (UMass) there are dozens of Anthony Grant's (VCU). It's the same EXACT thing in football. 5 coaches get fired after every season who started their career by being the next big coach at some non-AQ.

Tennessee? Really? Tennessee sucks.
