Sitting here watching the Tennessee/Florida game, and it has finally dawned on me why Tyler Bray has a lot of flash, but will never be an elite QB.
Bray has the body and the arm strength that NFL teams look for, however, he also has two major flaws that prevent him from being the QB everyone thinks he is and should be.
1. He predetermines his reads. When Bray walks up to the line, he reads the defense and generally throws it to that guy hell or high water. NFL coaching can help fix this and can possibly completely correct it.
2. This is the one that will be less fixable. While Bray does have a very strong arm, he also has a very low release point. Due to this, he throws the deep ball and balls vertically down the field very well, but struggles on the intermediate routes in the middle of the field because the ball sails on him. Very few NFL quarterbacks have low release points, with Vince Young having the worst of all time. Most release the ball high and are almost throwing downhill on the intermediate routes. However, Bray can't do this, and thats why you see him over throw so many people, throw interceptions in the middle of the field, and have a lot of interceptions off tip balls. Much like Tebow's arm action is nearly impossible to fix, I think we will see the same with Bray. Flashes brilliance, but his mechanical limitations will always rear its' ugly head.
