If my kid didn't graduate due to that mess. How they went this long before someone stepped in is a mystery.

Where was/is the Aberdeen School Superintendent and school board in all of this? How in the world did they ever allow it to degenerate to this point?

even know what advisors were) that kept us up to date on what we had to take and pass in order to graduate.) I don't think there was a test we had to pass. But my point is, like you, I wonder what in the hell were the Superintendent, Principals, and teachers doing to earn their money?

WalktheDawg you all asked where the principal, board, Super, etc were during all of this. Very legit question, but, where were the parents too? Maybe I'm in a small boat here but my wife and I keep up with not only what our kids are required to have but what else is there they can be doing to exceed that. Part of the problem today w/ education systems is kids are shoved out the door in the Sept and come back in May with no interest shown by the parents during that time. Teachers & administrators are expected to raise the kids 9 months out of the year. Thats no excuse for this system to get in the shape it is but it is fact. And no, me nor my wife or anybody in our family is a teacher either.

Down from the soapbox..............

This is it right here. All day everyday. Parents don't care. The admins should be held responsible as far as their responsibility goes, but that's it. Parents don't care. They don't ask questions. They don't go to PTA meetings. They don't keep up with how the test scores are going, which is all public info.

Most of those parents could give a rats ***. That's why the district is in the shape it's in right now. They were happy their kids were getting "passed on" because that meant they didn't have to give a **** about what their kid was doing at school.

it's amazing and sad how many first graders walk into a classroom these days and don't know their ABCs.

We had a meeting with my daughters Kinder garden teacher and she said that my daughter would be advanced to the first grade. Heck I didn't even know you could fail Kinder garden. I don't understand how schools get bad. They all have rules, certifications and teachers must meet the same requirements and they all get money from the same place. I don't understand how one public school can be better then another.

Ward will "be one of them" who graduates either because he likely had the course work to do so or if he didn't have the course work, someone will make sure he does in the end. Kind of the same way Brassel is still in school and on the team. Either way, Ward is a graduate.

Criminy! "<font face="Arial">state audit revealed the district didn't meet basic minimum standards in 31 of 37 areas</font>"

They waited until the district was deficient in 31 of 37 areas before stepping in?!? Did anyone in Jackson notice any clues? How about stepping in when the district was deficient in, oh, say, 18 of 37 areas?

So much for "being on the ball".

Unfortunately, this seems to be standard practice for the State BOE.

the State Dept of Education comes in and evaluates/audits the district and gives the district the findings. The district is given a chance to "right the ship" and Aberdeen's superintendent was doing absolutely nothing. So, someone from the Aberdeen district called the Dept of Education and complained about the crap still going on. They always give the board and superintendent a chance to make things right. That's why the superintendent and the board were ALL let go.<div>
</div><div>As soon as the truth is known about the Columbus school district, flat out broke at the moment, the Dept of Education will be auditing that district and sadly it may be in the same boat. That school board along with "let me get out of town now that I have broke the school system" superintendent are total idiots. They all need to be fired. Cutting a lot of teachers but not trimming any fat from the administrative staff and if the black woman who is serving as interim superintendent gets the job it will be sooner than later that the school system will be under state control.</div>

and what seems to be lack of interest on the vast majority of them. But they might be excused for not knowing exactly what the graduation requirements are, i.e., a certain number of credits in certain subjects. But the Superintendent and principals certainly cannot be excused.
