Will Les Koenning be a real loss for MSU?

Do you think Les Koenning going to Texas will hurt the offense next year, or do you think we can get someone as good, if not better, than Koenning?

I think Les did absolutely nothing positive or negative for MSU. I don't even think he was that great of a recruiter. I think he merely existed and proved to be a reliable old man to show wisdom for a young head coach. At the end of the day everyone liked him and that was all he was good for.

If we struggle on O next year it won't be because of his absence and if we are even better on O next year it won't be because he's gone.

I thank him for his service, but in actuality he owes MSU a great deal too. We revived his dead career. He was an assistant coach for a high school HC taking a team into its first year of FCS when we came calling.

I wish him all the best in life and I'm glad he got to go home to the university he fell in love with 70 years ago. No ill will. I just wish people were realistic about this... He wasn't a good recruiter. Average at best. Look at the two guys he was handling this year. And if the rumors are true about him and the words he had with various coaches around the state about Mullen... Well...

His area was Texas and south Mississippi. I can think of 2 guys we've gotten from there and 1 had Brewster's name all over it. In actuality we could be doing a lot better on the coast. There's a guy headed to Oklahoma at Harrison County I'd really like to have. The #1 JUCO in the country is sitting around in Perkinston and we could really use him.

Dan has shown a tendency to promote from within. I look for Hevesy to interview for the job and Knox to get his job if Dan promotes Hevesy. Then Dan brings in another RB coach to fill in for Knox.

That makes no sense. IF Hevesy gets promoted, he will still be the OL coach. And Knox has never coached OL.

You show your absolute ignorance. He recruited Vic Ballard and Chris White, Fred Ross out of Texas , and the auburn recruit was placed there by them , so we had no chance. The guy worked his *** off and got us back in some schools we had been locked out of from our coaches never showing up. Everybody knows Mullen was calling the plays and he accepted his role and it won't be any different with a new OC. By the way, Lashard Durr is better than Tito Windham. Get a life and find out facts before putting ******** on a board that slams a guy for no reason . He is gone and now let's see what Mullen does

I thought Brewster did more to get Ross than Koenning. Agree on the other recruits.

Richie Brown, Nick James, James Carmon, Dee Arrington, Clausell, Joe Morrow, Nick Redmond, Dylan Holley, Gus Walley, all from the coast area I'm sure I'm missing other of his recruits from that area. I think he was also in on Chappell and Cord last year but can't remember if he was primary or secondary on them. Sallach was in in Cord as well. I think most people really sell his recruiting short. Much better than the fans perceive.

Unfortunately i think the majority of the fan base feels basically the way you do, but they couldn't be more wrong. LK was one of the best recruiters on our staff.

I was drinking last night (heavily) but I still feel that way. Maybe not as harshly. But I don't think he was much more than a secondary guy. "Oh, and this is Les."

To me he was our JUCO contact, our Texas guy, and our coast guy. He did great on the JUCO's he got but that's fallen off, and I put a lot more weight on what the guys he's gotten to sign have done more so than him just getting them to sign. I think Chappelle is a solid receiver but don't tell me Les is a stud for getting him to sign with MSU.

Frankly, I've been wanting Les off the staff for a long time now. In DS's thread immediately following the season asking us what changes we'd like to see I said LK. I don't have anything against him and just like i drunkenly said last night I don't think his leaving will effect our offense negatively or positively. I just think we could upgrade from a recruiting and/or spread option QB-teachin' standpoint.

He served his purpose. Like Carl Torbush. Time to get with the times. We've got to be one of if not the youngest staffs in the SEC minus him. You could take that to be a positive or a negative. I just think coming over to MSU to play for a young group of guys is a niche we could be pumping. I guess the flip side is that Keonning played the father figure role.

Again, I just don't think it matters. After 5 years I think it was time to get some new blood.

les made chris relf look like an sec quarterback and moreover, made him a defensive concern for most teams. where les went wrong is not knowing how to handle russell as a qb. he was clueless and we didnt have the talent/experience on the field to run what we were trying to run. the incoming oc will have the benefit of having a qb that does both run and pass well. we need a hire that understands how to pick up 3rd downs and keep defenses guessing where we are going to hit them next.

I see your point about Knox. But currently, Hevesy coordinates the running game. Our spread offense is run-oriented. Knox is the RB coach. He can coordinate the running game and stay RB coach. then, Dan hires a new OL coach. My point is that the route we take to fill the OC position may not be to bring in a new coordinator, but to promote from within and hire a position coach to fill that vacancy instead.

Coordinators coach a position too. If Hevesy is the OC, he will still coach OL. We will then hire a QB coach. Knox may be the running game coordinator.

If Les was a great recruiter I'm glad to hear that. Even so, I'm happy he had the opportunity to move on. He had no experience with the spread option offense before coming to State and brought his "don't let the offense lose the game" mentality to our team. Look back at A&M's scores during his tenure there. They rarely score in double digits.
Hope Dan will hire a young OC who understands the offense but I'm not holding my breath.
