Will our scoring defense be better?

It's kind of obvious we will have more sacks and TFL's from Diaz's agressive defensive scheme, but will our overall scoring defense be better? Willthe agressive defensegive up more big plays? Will we get more turnovers?

Of course, how many points we give up partially depends on our offense. Will our offense control the clock better and keep our defense off the field more? Will our offense give up fewer turnovers leading to easier scores for the other teams?

The turnovers is going to be the biggest difference I think. They were absolutely brutal in all of our close losses, and even then we should have won at least a couple of the games we were close in.

Turnovers by game (opponent turnovers):

JSU - 2 (5)
Auburn - 2 (0)
Vandy - 1 (2)
LSU - 4 (0)
Ga Tech - 5 (1)
Houston - 4 (2)
MTSU - 0 (4)
Florida - 3 (2)
UK - 2 (3)
Bama - 3 (0)
Ark - 2 (2)
Tee's Hun - 2 (4)

We won every game where we had a positive t/o margin, and in most cases it wasn't close. Cut our turnovers in half and we probably win at least 2 more games last year.

Every defense says they are going to be an attacking defense but I think the Diaz version will be more of a risk v reward defense.. We will get out of position some, give up big plays, etc but hopefully we will be able to create more than we give up. What I hope this defense can do is force more three and outs, and turnovers. We need several short field opportunities particularly against better teams. Just sayin.

First off, we return more experience than what we started with last year. If you think about it we've only got 1 position on defense that does not have a starterwho gotdecentplaying time(OLB - possibly starting Cam Lawerance). We were very young in the secondary. Based on this fact alone I would expect us to be better.

But second, we should have a great d-line &I believedefense all starts up front. If your linecan stop the run up the middle and get pressure on the QB off the ends, it really takes pressure off the rest of your defense and lets you get moreagressive with playcalling. If the d-linelives up to the preseason hype, then you will truly see what an "attacking" defense looks like. Could get exciting - but again, depends on the guys up front.

the biggest things I want to see out of our defense:

More turnovers created. There are two ways to do that- 1. Get players like Deion Sanders, Darrel Revis, Ronnie Lott, and guys that are unbelieveable players. 2. Be aggressive and force the offense into making mistakes. Historically, the better defenses at MSU have been able to do #2 better than #1. Granted, we have had guys like Johnie Cooks, but that's not the norm. And the song is called the Bulldog Blitz and not the Starkville Two for a reason. Nothing against the Tampa Two- I think it's a great scheme. But I think an aggressive style defense fits players from Mississppi better in general, which is where most of our guys come from. Players from here like to blitz and get after the QB.

The second thing I want to see is an improvement in points allowed. I don't know that we were really horrible in that area- certainly not 2003 MSU bad- but the main idea of any defense whether it's a Starkville Two or a Tampa Two is to keep the other team scoring.

The other thing I want to see, and this was my biggest problem with Carl Torbush, is better overall gameplanning and also better in game adjustments from the defense. The reality is, Carl Torbush is not that much different than Ellis Johnson scheme wise, but I liked Ellis much better. Why? Because he had the ability to come up with a good gameplan 10 or 11 out of 12 times a year, and he was able to adjust in game. That's what I am most optomistic about with Manny Diaz and where I think we will see much improvement. We're going to give up points, no matter who our DC is- even if we had Saban. I just want the DC to be able to adjust instead of blindly rushing three guys and dropping 8 into coverage while the other team is gashing us like the Auburn game. If something isn't working, do something different.

As an aside, I say this: I think a lot of people hear "aggressive defense" and immediately Joe Lee Dunn 2002 pops into a lot of our fans head. Manny is not going to be anything like Joe Lee Dunn. We are not going to see 10 DB's and a LB to start a game- not a complaint at all, I thought it was funny and cost the other team a TO. We are not going to see cover-1 or cover 0 almost exclusively the entire game and have to hope that we have Fred Smoot and Robert Bean in the secondary to be good. What we will see is a guy running a base 4-3- a very common defensive front- and a guy that is going to have a lot of people moving around, a lot of different coverages, and a lot of different blitzes. MSU fans do not need to be afraid of an aggressive defense- some of our most successful have been aggressive- including our best ever in 1999.

is to not necessarily create more turnovers, but to create more bad plays for the offense. While getting TO's are great, the big key week to week will be putting the offense in more long situations. We want to create more 2nd and 14's than 2nd and 4's...and then also once you have created those situations, force the QB to make quicker decisions in those long situations instead of picking you apart- force them to the hot read and then have the F/S jump the hot read (provided if you are able to be in man-free).

With the people we have returning, I look for some really big plays this season defensively. Add that to the offense being better, and we should get 7 wins to enjoy the bowl season
