If you asked me a week ago, answer would be yes! And with his recent interview, now I would say no. I’m gonna say it will be G-League for SS, unfortunately! I will happily eat crow if I’m wrong!

"I'm 100% open to all options right now," he said. "I want to see what all of them have to offer. I need to learn more about the G League in terms of what their offer is and which other players will be on the team to decide whether that's something I want to do. People have been penciling me in with Kentucky, and I'm honestly not sure where that's coming from. Maybe it's because Shai Gilgeous-Alexanderwent there from Uplay and was one and done. It's true they were the only official visit I've taken so far, because all the other schools asked to wait until students were back on campus and football games were being played. No one really knows anything about my situation besides my family and Dwayne."

why?
that is pretty much what every recruit says when it is being reported xxx schools leads
most of them like the attention of being recruited. in all honesty most of us would to

Exactly. You people put too much stock into what these kids say to the public. What they say to their friends & coaches is what gets leaked to people and that’s the stuff that causes people like Slater to be as confident as they are.

I’m gonna say no for all top-5 recruits from here on out until Cal proves me wrong. It’s not about disrespecting Cal. It’s just a personal choice to stop doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Man I’m kinda with u. I thought with the addition of coach O and Chin this might change but it ain’t looking good.

Gotta remember though. O & Chin haven’t had a chance to build a relationship with anyone yet. The 2022 class will be the telling one.
I'm sure O and Chin were recruiting these guys at Illinois. They just haven't been recruiting these guys very long since they've been at UK.

Probably better than hearing "UK has been my dream school." Those haven't turned out too well for us.

How about give them more than the 2 months they've been here. They just got the jobs. Let's give them a full recruiting cycle before we say they haven't made a difference. I can't believe I had to type this, some of y'all are just, wow.

Some posters have used Sharpes imminent commitment as the proof that Cals recruiting is “back”

One of the dumbest things our fans do is count their recruiting chickens before they hatch. Such a long list of recruits/transfers that started off as a “sure thing to UK” that didn’t pan out.

i think every fanbase counts their chickens before they hatch
Duke fans thought Knox and Boston were locks
KU fans think every recruit is a lock

Cal and UK aren't getting the kids they used to get. All the snark comments and little digs at fans doesn't change that.

Not sure what's going on, but Cal has ran out big talk about things. Now he's getting beat by the likes of Ok St and Memphis recently.

It would be akin to Saban losing a a recruit to Wake Forest or Vandy. Something is off.

Boston was a composite top 5 recruit in literally the season we just played and Clarke(RIP) at 8. Just didn't pan out well at all while here.

That won't be a problem anymore with the new recruiting staff. I think this is a hangover from Justus and Barbee.

I think as Kentucky figures out how to manage recruitments in the NIL era, you'll see a combination of high level recruiting as before, but also with combining experience from returning players and grad transfers. Simply the next 5 years will be more successful than the past 5 years.

Hope so...last five years were not very good by UK standards.

Probably, but who knows these days.

Cal needs this one. Another oof would be a bad look.
It won't take "another oof" for Cal to look bad. Cal already looks bad, based upon many, many well-known and well-publicized prior recruiting misses. And then, of course, there's the 9-16 record last year.

Nevertheless ... Go 'Cats !

Yep, if there is one thing Cal is known for it is poor recruiting!
This is a little disingenuous since the context the thread is about Cal's ability to sign the top level 5-star kids...Wall, Cousins, Knight, Noel, Davis, Gilchrist, Towns, etc....

We all know Cal can get his share of bottom end 5-star players, but they tend not to be good enough for the "succeed and proceed" strategy to work.

Fair.

I would counter that shooters and having good experienced players win championships in today's college game. Just so you know I'm not a Cal apologist, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know Cal hasn't thrived in this area either.

The college game has changed the last 5 years. You must have shooters ... without relying totally on the 3pt shot. Last year's Ala team is an example of team that relied too heavily on the 3. These teams will almost always have an off night in 6 game NCAA tourn. Yes, you still need a player that can beat his man off the bounce.

Having a top 5 player is great if you can surround them with experience and good shooting. But, top 5 player is not essential for winning it all.

I will give Cal credit for changing his philosophy of roster development this year. It gives me hope as he heads into his sunset years of coaching. Now ... to balance the roster with shooters, experience and a few top 10 players would be my perfect recipe. We'll see what he does with next year's team. It certainly appears that Coach O and Chin are going to reel in some top recruits. Let's hope it goes well.

Peace

But did he really change his roster development or go with transfers because he missed on so many top targets?

I can only guess. But, it appears to me that Grady, Oscar and Fredrick were takes regardless of this year’s recruiting. Grady and Fredrick provide immediate experience and shooting. Both can handle the ball.

Wheeler feels like an insurance piece that you can connect to Askew’s recruitment. He was supposed to be a good 2-3 yr player.

Transfers are the new norm. I criticize Cal for many things. But I won’t criticize him for winning the transfer season. Ultimately, I view all transfers as fixing previous recruiting errors and roster weaknesses. Cal did that well this year.

I do not think we get Sharpe. If he does not go G-League by next season the cream of the crop NIL schools will have got their acts together and offer packages we can't compete with.

That’s what happened with Memphis. Their NIL pitch won out for Duran.

I think it’s going to depend a lot on how NIL goes this year. You look at that college list Arizona, OK st and Kansas your talking about three teams who could end up on probation. The only likely contender is Kansas. It should be UK or g-league but the good news is we are in on several big time guards.

We're gonna lose either Sharpe or Lively to one of these semi pro leagues, maybe both. Everyone just needs to prepare themselves for it. We can't match with NIL what they will pay.
