We are 14-26 in the SEC the past five seasons. And yes I even counted the 2021 vacated season. To me that is a dumpster fire considering we had a coach the administration felt like was worth $9 million when other coaches making a whole lot less are winning national championships
Historically, that would rate as one of the better UK SEC records over a 5 year span. I can't argue the contract was over the top, but Barney wanted to make sure Stoops didn't get lured away. Remember, he was a hot name on the job rumor board for a couple of years.

Perhaps. I dont have the facts to say it was or wasn’t. Even so, unless you can name anyone else who did it at Kentucky in the last forty years, the point stands. Stoops deserved better —

Or maybe you’d rather talk about overall winning percentages. Stoops is also the ONLY coach in the last forty years at Kentucky to win more games than they lost. Yep, you read that right — literally EVERY other coach had a negative W/L record other than Stoops. And we fired the guy! Our fans listen too much to people like Nick Roush and Matt Jones instead of paying attention to history.

Stoops 50.6%
Claiborne 47.2%
Brooks 45.3%
Mumme 43.5%
Morriss 39.1%
Phillips 35.1%
Curry 33.3%
Stoops went as far as he could and the team was regressing. We should recognize his good years and also recognize it was time to move on. Stein just needs time and our schedule is brutal this year. If we are close to .500 this year that is good for me.

In 3 years if we are still struggling then we can legitimately question if Stein is the guy.

Stoops was a very good coach. We were far from a dumpster fire.. We had a couple tough seasons, but we almost beat Texas last year. Honestly, I didn’t see much difference or offense was sputtering. Quarterback was trying to manage the game as the whole game plan was to kill Clock just like stoops just manage the game and play ball possession. Alabama is not a good team. I thought minchey was supposed to be big-time. He looks exactly like what he is Back Up at A playoff school. Probably hit or miss each game.
I have to be honest with you the second half of that game. I saw no fight from the team whatsoever. I saw the play calling get very conservative with several exceptions on the fourth down, but not the first three downs. The second half we looked like a cowed team. The first have the defense seem inspired and they are the reason we had the first half lead along with a bunch of Alabama mistakes. I'm not gonna judge the code through two games. Let's be honest about what we saw yesterday.

Some of the crap I read tonight is rediculous.Heres reality. UK hasn't won an SEC home game in 3 years. Somehow some of our delusional fans think a new head coach in the first big game as coach, with a new team and a green QB was going to beat Alsbama. An Alabama team with one of the best defenses in the country and one of the favorites to win the SEC.Not only that but a few are questioning if Stein was the right hire because we lost. What are you people going to say when we lose 7 or 8 games
Anybody with a brain could have told you his team would struggle this year. Give the guy a break. Rome wasn't built in a day and an SEC contender will not either. Some of our fans need to grow up.

I don't think it matters. Any rational intelligent person knows Kentucky football is mediocre at best and will always get destroyed by the contenders and power houses in the SEC like Alabama. Doesn't really make a difference who the coach is.

I disagree. Many people were on record saying Kentucky football was toast and couldn’t win 10 games and then Mark Stoops showed up and did it twice. It is perfectly rational to believe that Kentucky can pick up where Stoops left off but it won’t be easy.

I find that extremely unlikely. While Kentucky football has had a couple decent years the chances of them even fielding a mid team in the next few years are extremely low. That's why I don't watch the games or really care because the expectations are about as low as they can be. It's why the coach doesn't matter and how they do doesn't matter.

Chances are they won't even have a winning record this year and people are still going to support the coach because the expectations are trash, so why bother? Will be a lot more fun and exciting when basketball gets here.

No one forcing you to watch something you don’t want. Don’t know what the point of taking a dump in your neighbor’s yard is. Just don’t watch it and don’t fill up the threads with non-fan takes. Why even do that!?

Because we weren't "ponying up", the Texas board is free to join, you can celebrate Stoops and Co's big win tonight against Ohio state.
Truthfully, we did struggle at the end with Stoops because we did not pony up. And I am extremely concerned about our ability to pony up enough to get quality depth to have the kind of team we want.

The day we can fill a 100k seat football stadium maybe we'll be able to pony up?

In the weakest SEC east of all time.
100%. The only "real" team for most of Stoops days was Georgia. Every other team in the East was WAYYY down. UT, Mizzou, Vandy, UF and USCjr were ALL bad for most of this time. Throw a few cupcakes in there and you've got 8+ wins seasons. I'm not saying Stoops didn't do a good job, he absolutely did! But, he had a ceiling. He's NOT getting 10 wins if he coaches during the 90s thru the 2000s.

Any UK coach will always have my support no matter if they win ten games or zero. But that's assuming we are taking care of business on the basketball end.

I just can't worry about the football coach when we aren't even winning in basketball. We are a basketball school period. Supposed to be anyway.
That’s ridiculous to think. We can be both, a successful football teams funds basketball a lot better.

Not with the bargain bin project coaches that Barnhart hired hoping they might pan out. And then giving them ludicrous contracts for mediocre results.
You want results, you hire proven winners who have won at this level. Maybe Stein will pan out, but so far I haven't seen much to be hopeful about. I thought I was watching a Stoops offense against Alabama.

Stoops got lucky as those 10 win seasons occurred when the SEC had two divisions with the Eastern teams at historic lows other than Georgia and we got to play them every year along with Mississippi State. That kind of schedule is no longer possible with no divisions and nine games. Most of these teams have more money than UK despite what some believe

Was Stoops the only coach at Kentucky in the last 40 years with an advantageous schedule? Reason I ask is he’s the only one with 10 wins, lucky or not…and he did it twice.

I really can’t answer that question as my memory is not that keen over 40 years. But as to Stoop’s luck with the eastern division Missouri won two times and appeared in the SEC championship. It was really an opportune time to exploit this weakness but by the time Stoops was able to take us out of the disaster of Joker Georgia had re-established its power.

One thing I notice is a constant for anti-Stoops rhetoric.

It's almost always built around something someone OTHER than Kentucky did. I find that to be problematic --- Stoops coached at Kentucky and his conditions were not the same as the ones in Indiana, Missouri or Vanderbilt. Those programs having success at this or that point in time does not entitle us to the same degree of success.

Instead, what I see is a recent history at this school where Stoops is head and shoulders above those who preceded him. It shouldn't be hard for people to give him his flowers, or at the very least, not kick him at every stop.

I think you misinterpret my point. I wasn’t an anti Stoops guy though I I thought it better that he leave for his own sake. I point to a situation that allowed him to win ten games that disappeared and will not be back. For that reason I feel it was irrational to expect ten wins at Kentucky with the current conditions. I would love to be wrong but I don’t expect it out of Stein either. I also have defended Pope because of the new era. The SEC is infinitely better now than Cal’s early years yet fans expect the same result. If I were Pope I would take the money and retire in my mid fifties and be done with the mess that is NCAA basketball.

You had me until that garbage about Stoops in the middle. No idea why our fans ridicule the ONLY coach who has even managed to finish a single season with a winning record in the SEC for the last forty years!

FORTY YEARS! And he did it twice! No one else did it AT ALL!
Stoops was the most overpaid coach of all time. He had some good moments, but he was also doing that when the sec east was awful. Outside of UGA, there was coaching turnover at every school. We saw that once the SEC east got better, Stoops record came back to reality. Look at his record against the SEC west. Outside of Miss St, he had 1 win and it was against a bad Auburn team.

Thinking like this is exactly why we’ve sucked for long. What would be a complete failure at other schools was celebrated here. No excuses. F^*% Stoops.
Exactly Stoops had the most wins but he had the most losses too. He hit his ceiling a long time ago it was time for a change a while ago. We were in the same boat both basketball and football. The coaches stayed way too long thanks to stupid *** contracts that the stupid *** Mitch drew up.

I think you have to give him credit for the wins because he would have gotten hammered with losses but I do think there is something to how the schedules played out. Especially 2021. I think the 2007 team could have done more with that schedule than the 2021 team did.

I don’t think the 2021 team had to beat a team that ended up with a regular season record above .500 until they played Iowa in the bowl game.
