Steve Spurrier is still trying to get it to work at USC...and we are state. I hope he does, and turn the whole program around.</p>

It can work at state but the sec defenses are going to get more and more comfortable defending it now that they will see it more often.

to what Dan Mullen runs.

Spurrier's offense is far more conventional.

"Along with winning 122 games in 12 seasons at Florida--far and away the most of any coach in school history--Spurrier is also credited with changing the way the SEC played offense. Spurrier employed a pass-oriented offense in contrast to the ball control, rush-oriented offenses that were traditionally found in the SEC. His innovative offensive scheme forced many in the conference to change their offensive and defensive playcalling."

just b/c you pass a lot, doesn't mean you run a spread.

Of the top 11 teams in the country in total offense last season, eight ran some variation of the modern "spread offense" - LINK (http://sportsillustrated....ve.revolution/index.html)

Five animated plays from Meyer, Petrino, Leach, Peterson, Spurrier
Virtual Playbook - Really neat LINK (http://sportsillustrated....tual.playbook/index.html)

Urban Meyer Spread Option-LINK (http://sportsillustrated....offense.meyer/index.html)

Petrino Power Spread Attack - LINK (http://sportsillustrated....ense.petrino/index.html1)

Mike Leach Aerial Assault - LINK (http://sportsillustrated....offense.leach/index.html)

Boise State Hawkins Chameleon Offense - LINK (http://sportsillustrated....ense.petersen/index.html)

Steve Spurrier **** N Fire Offense - LINK (http://sportsillustrated....ense.spurrier/index.html)

Why don't Vandy and Miss State run it? Or maybe - when will they?
The SEC may see a lot of this offense, and right soon.

He runs the spread guy

Russell in the same formation as he ran in Meridian and we have 4-5 above average wide outs we are going to light up the scoreboard. Russell has some of the best mechanics throwing the ball i have seen from a high school QB in this state in 25 years. Not only can he throw the Farve fastball on deep outs but his fade pass has great touch and accuracy.

hit the "reply" button inside the post you are trying to reply to.

And if Spurrier's offense is the spread, then pretty much everyone's is.

I mean, with the power I, you can stack the box and make a crappy QB beat you with the pass. If a team cannot run then you drop more in coverage. With the spread you still dont have a single approach to slowing it down. The "spread" is adaptable to your athlete's abilities. Sure you can game plan for it, but it still creates mismatches.

Its a "fun n gun" a version of the spread only alot less running, he ran it a Florida. Anyway my point is my concern that state will not be able to get the players to create mis matches needed to run the spread

Delmon Robinson and Arceto Clark can probably do that right now to some degree. This takes advantage of the numerous pure athletes in the state.

And aGAIN, just b/c they threw the ball vertically a lot, doesn't mean they spread the field.

He understands that he is going to have to work w/ bringing the best out of the players he has to work w/ now, & will adapt his offensive scheme / concept to fit our players & put them in the best possible position to succeed on the offensive side of the ball & win as many games as they can.

my interpretation of his comments on offense today: you can have a concept that you want to go w/ on the offensive side of the ball, but you have to adapt it to the players you have.

That would be the polar opposite of another coach whose desire was to ignore the abilities of his players, & stubbornly force offensive sets that apparently had no regard for players abilities

Spurrier's offense, or the Fun 'n Gun, was not a spread offense, or even a variation of the spread. It involved stretching, not spreading, the field. What made the offense so lethal, was there ability to throw deep out of offensive sets that you would consider to be "run sets", like I-Formation, One Back Sets, with tight-ends, etc. The fact that they ran those type formations most often indicates that is was not a spread offense. It was a conventional offense, with really good QB's and receivers that relied alot on timing.

Ask yourself this: can it be any worse than what we have seen the past 8 years?

Bumphis, Patterson, Thames, Smith, Russell, Rob Elliott, Terrance Davis and Lampley are the type of guys that can make it work. It's up to Mullen to sign them.

Yup i saw the pep rally on M2M and as excited as anyone that we now have a offensive oriented coach that will attack the field.

and dont have the energy today to do so anymore. Not only will it work, its what we should have been running for 5 years now...sit back, watch Mullen work, and be damn glad we dont have to watch that **** Crooms called an offense anymore.
