I would just think it's a stupid move, but I would still think that Dan is a good coach in general. Much like after the jump pass bullcrap that cost us the LSU game a couple of years ago. He's human, he makes mistakes, makes bad moves from time to time, but pretty much every other coach in the world makes mistakes and bad decisions too. Even Bear Bryant made a few I'm sure. He has also has had us in pretty much every game at worst, has won a NYD bowl game and has us on track for another. He has done many more good things than bad.
And speaking of jump passes- the reason we never try any trick plays is because they always seem to backfire against us. See the fake punt attempt against La Tech this year as well. I don't know how much more aggressive, outside the box, creative you can get than faking from your own 30 or whatever it was yardline. Would we rather lose like we did to LSU running a "neat" play that doesn't work or win handing the ball off to Anthony Dixon?
I don't know if we don't work on those plays enough, or if it's bad luck or what the deal is.
Also, I think people are looking at the South Carolina can't stop the option thing too much. Navy and Auburn are fairly exotic- I don't know a better word- offenses. People don't normally see a team like Navy every week and most teams don't run their offense as quickly as Auburn does. Because of that teams struggle.
Regardless, Relf hasn't exactly been Tommy Frazier running the ball lately. For us to run the ball better with him, he has to be able to throw the ball better.
Because of the two sentences above, we're better off starting Tyler because at least they won't start off with nine in the box, and he runs the option better anyway. And while he may not complete 90% of his passes against them, I bet that he will throw the ball better than whatever Relf would have done. And the receiver will catch the ball better because Tyler won't hang them out to dry every single throw. Maybe the WR's can't get open because Relf stares them down and doesn't go through his progressions and they know that they are about to get blasted.
