""The true measure is when ADs actually hire head football coaches of color," Westerhaus said."
No, the true measure is giving black candidates an equal shot. That's what Dr. King fought for. He didn't want black people hired to prominent positions in order to fill out some quota or reach an "acceptable" level of integration, he wanted people to be judged on the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. I wish people would actually read his speeches and apply the principles contained therein.
Also, if you want black coaches hired, a good way to help the process would be to quit making a big deal out of both the hiring and firing of black coaches. People say they don't want people to look at skin color and judge based on that, but that's exactly what is going on. When we fire Croom, either this year or next, there will be a stink about it. Nevermind that his record is terrible. Nevermind that he is not cut out to be head coach. A school from Mississippi will be firing a black football coach, and the first one in the SEC at that. Don't you think that it deters some major universities from hiring an AA if, when they fire him, people either outright cry or insinuate racism?
"Some schools ignored minorities last year. That's why Mississippi, West Virginia and Dayton got "F" grades in the BCA's report."
And that's just dumb. Ole Miss fired Orgeron, arguably the dumbest coach in SEC history, and hired a proven winner used to battling against the big guys without a team full of big guns. I give them an A. I can't see how they could have done any better. Had they waited to interview minority coaches, who knows if this deal would have fallen through. Yet they are supposed to put the good of the program and university on the backburner and grant an interview to someone they have no intention of hiring (white or black) simply because some independant body says so? I give the BCA an S for stupidity.
