I'm still waiting on a statue for John Roache, Alex English, Kevin Joyce, and Brian Winters.
Ray Tanner should have a statue (for coaching). Won 2 National Titles and took us to 4 CWS Finals. It was really the first big time success we’ve had in any real spotlight at this university.

These girls are deserving as is Coach Staley. But it does kind of highlight how poorly we’ve treated some of our former legends in other sports. I really believe the Ray Tanner statue should be next. If nothing else, some kind of statue of the dogpile honor winning our first CWS. We have so many baseball players that could’ve / should’ve been honored far more than we have as a university.

To be honest, Tanner probably has a lot to do with us honoring them in a timely fashion. Probably also has a lot to do with why he doesn’t have a statue yet.

Had any of them lifted the Gamecocks to national championships, you probably would have seen it.

True story, saw the Lady Gamecocks down in Ft Myers in 2017 after the Thanksgiving holidays. They played Rutgers who was coached by Hall of Famer Vivian Stringer. There were only about 100 people in attendance and I was literally behind Carolina's bench. After the game, Coach Stringer signed my program. Instead of asking Dawn Staley to sign, I asked Aja to sign and she told me she couldn't. Should have gotten Dawn and called it a day. Well, I call up to Carolina and the SID told me she would get it signed. I sent it up and never saw it again. Ugh.

I think it would make sense to have a statue of English, based both on his stellar college career as well as his Hall of Fame pro career.

It ain't enough, call later.
John Roche was pretty amazing and is one of the greatest players in ACC history. He’s easily the best basketball player that has played for this university. George Rogers didn’t win a championship but we got him a statue for football, which was well-deserved. We’ve had a few of players win the “Heisman” for their sport, with Kip Bouknignt being the first to come to mind, winning the Golden Spikes.

I guess we just need to set criteria for what deserves a statue. But John Roche should definitely be in that conversation.

Still, the next should absolutely be Ray Tanner. After that then they can discuss.

Many of those who played under McGuire distanced themselves from USC due to the way the school treated McGuire in his latter coaching years and forced him out the door. Say what you want regarding Dave Odom's coaching prowess, but at least he did make efforts (successfully) to get these greats back on campus to celebrate 100 years of USC men's basketball.

I wonder how much that has played into statues - or lack thereof.

The mark of patheticity is trying to stretch notable achievements into generational ones.
