Wilson vs. Diaz

In the first six games of the year, the Longhorns are giving 25.4 points per game.

In seven games, the Dogs have given up 19.3 points per game. And our defense seems to be hitting their stride right now.

The Longhorns have several top recruiting classes that make up the players on that defense.

Diaz is better at getting publicity for himself, but Wilson may be the better coach. We may have "won" in the changeover.

Personally, I'm not so sure about that since the BigXII has better offenses top to bottom in their conference. When you have Baylor putting up the numbers they are, that just shows that's a really offensive minded league. That's not something I'd be willing to bet unless both coaches were up against the same type of offenses.

More like they just don't play defense in that league. The SEC has won 7 of the last 8 Cotton Bowls, mostly by large margins, even though the Cotton Bowl is much lower in the pecking order for the SEC than it is for the Big 12.

Sometimes schemes can trump talent. Emphasis on sometimes. I'd have to see their production for a few years before I could speak on that confidently.

Before OU and OSU obliterated Texas, they were only giving up 15 ppg against below average competition (UCLA, BYU, Iowa State and Rice). So against two elite teams, they gave up 46 ppg. The rest of their schedule is more in the middle of the pack, and will probably be a better gauge of Manny's defense.

Wilson has held two terrible teams to 3 points combined, and got lit up by Auburn which gets more and more disappointing every game as Auburn struggles. I take some positives out of the last two SEC games when we have played pretty darn well against UGA and USC. It won't be enough to hold down Alabama and Arkansas, but we are playing enough defense to win the other three.

I'm pretty pleased with Wilson at this point. I've said a million times that good DCs are a dime a dozen. We had people ready to jump off buildings when Ellis Johnson left, and after a one year failure with Torbush, we hired Manny.

I think we can basically throw that one out as far as rating the defense goes. The offense spotted 'em 14, and our special teams couldn't slow down their kick returners. I swear they started every drive from about the 50 yard line in that game.

We don't know if Manny could recruit so that is irrelevant. He left before he could sign any players.</p>

That was premature. He's doing a very good job and we seem to be improving every game. If he can win some big recruits, I hope he is around for a long time...

I was in a panic over our D after the Auburn game, until I remembered that my rage over our special teams play explained almost everything. We gift wrapped 14 points early, and their average starting field position had to have been no farther back than our 40. We got our asses handed to us in field position that day. I've been very impressed, and surprised, by our defense since. I'm still holding my opinion of Wilson until 'Bama and UPig, but I think he's done very well so far.

Taking a look at our schedule last year, I think Diaz had a easier path to success than Wilson has had this year - and definitely had better personnel to work with than Wilson has had this year.

<span style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">2010</span>
- As for the non-conference schedule, we got to face a horrendous Memphis team, we struggled to stop a poor UAB team at home, we allowed a ****** Alcorn State team to hit a few big plays and did a pretty good stopping a Houston team that had no decent QB to speak of after losing Case Keenum for the year.
- We got to face a very mediocre Georgia team at home, as well as a Florida team that was stinking it up offensively last year as they struggled at the QB position.
- The defense did do a very good job against Auburn early in the season, however, this was before Newton and Co. got rolling. Had we faced them later in the season, it may not have been nearly as close.
- Diaz's defense still got smoked by LSU, Bama and Arkansas.
- We got to face a down Michigan team in the Gator Bowl that was in some turmoil with their HC on the verge of losing his job

<span style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">2011</span>
- We once again got to face a horrendous Memphis team, we didn't look sharp against Louisiana Tech (but no worse than we did against UAB last year), we shut down a bad UAB team on the road and have yet to play UT-Martin.
- Wilson has had to face a much improved Georgia team on the road (where offensive turnovers hurt us) and an SC team that was in better shape offensively than the Florida team we faced last year and definitely had more weapons than that UF team did last year.
- The Auburn game, while on the road, was still a poor defensive performance - no excuses for Wilson there
- Diaz couldn't have coached a better game against LSU than Wilson did this year...and Diaz or not, we will still get thrashed by Bama and likely Arkansas as well.

and I think Geoff Collins is a good coach as well who has impressed me with improving our LB play. Only criticism I would have of this year, and I don't know the numbers, but we don't seem to be quite as good in the Red Zone this year with keeping people out of the end zone. Appears that way anyway, like I said the numbers may end up saying different. I know SC was in the Red Zone 3 times Saturday and got 2 TDs and we go the one interception.
