Play Nickel and Dime plus a 15 yd cushion for good measure. We've got the best defensive back field since '98-'99 yet we don't take advantage of it. Melvin Smith's old crusty *** needs to go and let Smoot come in and teach. We should be play PRESS-MAN (Bump & Run) and mess with the QB's timing and you sometimes take the WR completely outta the play.

572 of total offense is repulsive after what we did to Auburn last wk.

TORBUSH would be so proud.

How many points and how many turn overs? It's the system, bend but don't break, attack and let them make mistakes. The yardage is misleading but we always struggle with short timing pass offenses like Troy and La Tech etc... if our Receivers hadn't dropped all those sure fore TD's it wouldn't have been a big deal.

We struggle with short timing routes because we play 15 17n yds off the ball. With the DBs like Slay and Banks...you're not letting play makers make plays. "Bend but don't break." < Manny Diaz's bring the 17n house and let'em know you run the damn thing. - This cushion is gonna ruin our 7-0 hopes going into Tuscaloosa because Tyler Bray is gonna ream our defense's *** and then some. Changes need to be made. We have the athletes. Let them PLAY! Don't take them out of the game by playing a weak zone. Hell...a corner blitz would be nice every once in a while. We're so vanilla.

And you really believe that our "special teams coach" allows Wilson to decide our defensive scheme and Melvin to call our secondary coverage? Smoot? I think Mullen has learned his lesson with inexperienced coaches. Yep, Mullen just keep allowing Melvin to pay nickel and dime with 15 yd cushions. For a mere $100K I'll sell you a three-legged jackass that will win the triple crown...

Look at our stats for the last couple years. We've had a much better scoring defense than holding yards to a minimum. We also lead the nation in takeaways right now too I believe. I'm not excusing the poor defensive play but I think we were much poorer stopping the run tonight.

We did break a lot...

in the 2nd half. Thankfully, we had enough O to win.

We were not facing Peyton Manning tonight...

And college QB's, for the most part, fold under pressure. What do we do? Sit back, rush 3 and give him all day in the pocket.

Last week we put pressure on Frazier 2 out of 3 plays and forced him into bad decisions. We should be doing this every week, no matter the opponent. Plain and simple. Pressure the 17 out of the other team until they cannot take it. Have to force the hand, not sit and react.

I'll bet my right n*t that the defensive coaches installed the scheme that the boss ordered. It's madness. I just hope that there is a method to it.

I guess banks being about six inches from his man is a huge cushion? Did we watch the same game? They abused our LBs - Wells and others plus our backup DBs.

And Whitley is not back to 100%.

Bottom line- our defense held these guys to 4 scores. Our offense should have put up 40+. That's what I was disappointed with.

Hell yes. Glad I'm not the only one. People need to take off their maroon glasses and realize mediocrity isn't gonna get it done. Hell it's great that we're 3-0. It's awesome. But I'm looking at the bigger picture here. The Croom era is over. We have a legit shot to make some noise this year.

You know...Mullen went for a little trip to Eugene, OR this summer...you'd figure he woulda gained a little mean streak about him and keep the foot on the pedal...because sure doesn't show any kind of mercy. For example, we coulda kicked the School Up North's *** by 50 the past 3 outings but "winning is good enough" even if by 1 pt. Bull ****. We're too nice. Mullen preaches and has this quote on in the team's locker room: "I will give relentless effort today." <----- Practice what you preach. You're not out there to make friends. You're out there to kick ***. That's what he's making the big money for. As soon as we get rid of this mediocre/vanilla play calling (on both sides of the ball) and start playing aggressively (play calling included) then we can do away with this "red headed step child" of the SEC and get some damn R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Yep... catch the ball and it's out of control and we don't even notice that we played everybody and their mom on defense. Hell, even if Morrow just catches that one, it's comfortable.

Y'all are missing the fact that Troy's passing spread WANTS you to play man and bring pressure. They want you to bring extra guys at the QB, because their offense is geared toward getting it out of his hands quickly. So if you blitz and bring 5 or 6, the QB gets rid of it and those 5 or 6 defenders are out of the play. They want you to play man so that if one guy misses his assignment, they get a big play for TD. We didn't do that, we made them work for their drives.

Now, I agree that we play way too soft on the edges. Why are the CBs ten yards off the ball on 3rd and 5? And I also agree that we gave up way too much offense from Troy tonight. But basing conclusions like the ones in this thread are a little misguided, given the opponent's style, if you ask me.

My main concern is playing soft at the CB position. Play physical IN YOUR FACE press-man defense and take away the Wideouts and maybe play 4-4 to drop another man in there for a zone if that's what you're going for to cover the slot man and the crossing routes in the flats. All they had to do is throw under the zone and boom...5-10 yds...money. It adds up. Hell...we got absolutely no pressure on the QB...we should have just let our DL and DE's stand up and hold there hands up to clog the QB's throwing lane... make him scramble and let our DBs make plays. Our DL sure wasn't accomplishing anything by playing patty cake and making paper dolls with Troy's OL.

I totally agree as far as the offense goes. We catch 9 balls that hit us in the numbers and we can sorta overlook the defense.

However...go and read Mullen's post-game comments and he definitely calls out Coach Wilson multiple times.

Goes to show...I'm not the only person frustrated with Wilson's coaching abilities.

I wouldn't expect you to understand, seeing as how you think we should've played Troy just like we played Auburn defensively.

I just agreed with you dubmass. Gaining 240 yds and throwing for 340 makes no sense. Where's the happy medium? There is none. Switch the looks up. We sit back, wait, and chase. Kinda like Stansbury tryin' to run a 2-3 zone. If the defensive coordinator is giving you the same damn look 90% of the game...of course you dial the sumbitch up and take advantage of what he is giving you. Troy's offensive coordinator raped Wilson & Co. tonight. A great indian chief once said, "If you can't see...open your eyes."
