Let it be known in the agent circles that you will waive Jeff Lebby's buyout (which was $6.2m last year) if he takes an OC job. At least that way you don’t have tell prospective coaches that you fired yet another coach after two years or less. And you don’t have to pay his buyout. It also is a strong signal to Lebby that you’re not happy with his performance. Lebby can save face by leaving before getting fired.

Chip Kelly and Gus Malzahn left their head coaching jobs to take OC positions at better programs. Those guys are older than Lebby, so maybe they were burned out.

Just a guess thought.

Downside. You have to find somebody to take him on a free transfer that will match his salary here. Not gonna happen.
I don't think another school would have to match his salary here, if he wanted to get out. Selmon could say, "Are you happy here? You can walk away with no hard feelings." He could keep his reputation intact relatively speaking. "The roster was worse than I thought...the university never gave me the resources I needed...blah blah blah."

But, yeah it's wishful thinking that Lebby would walk away on his own and that a blue-blood would want him to run an offense at this point.

This is a ridiculous argument, it's never the right year, we aren't getting a James Franklin or big name coach! Why are people so delusional?
It’s pretty simple… would you rather be in competition with LSU, Auburn, Fla, Arky, Penn State, VT, UCLA and others for top coaching candidates or in competition with ULL for a top coaching candidate.

you want to be the best job available when hiring to secure the best candidate

Maybe because we did get Mike Leach and Ole Miss did get Lane Kiffin?
I would argue at the time leech was a well-respected coach but I don't think he was a "big name coach." God rest his soul. I wish he was still alive cuz I think he would have been here for a very long time and we would have been very happy with the results. Kiffin was given his chance and has done very well and is about to make a boatload of money. I'm just being a realist and I think if you truly look at it. Mike Leach was a legend who had been out of coaching loved Starkville and was coming here to retire. Which is what we need, not someone using us as a stepping stone and getting on the job training.
