Liberals lost their minds about the MLB AS game being in Atlanta and then had it moved......but they are as quiet as a church mouse regarding the Olympics being in China.
It definitely snuck up on me. Haven't been following much of the qualifiers. But it's always enjoyable to watch. I can only watch SO much track and swim events in the summer Olympics. Obviously I'm a bit biased, but I find things like the Biathlon, Curling, Nordic Combined interesting. Things you don't get to see often, and it's not like they have a dozen versions of them.. the 100, the 200, the 400, etc..
I'll be up at Lake Placid in March for a ski vacation. Fun town with some great Olympic history if you have the chance to go.

All politicians — both sides — are garbage, and care nothing about 99% of us. I don’t boycott anything. I’ll be watching the Olympics, and anything else I damn well please. We have way too many snowflakes in this country.
I spent three years living in Plattsburgh. I absolutely love upstate New York.
Oh awesome! What areas have you been to living up there? I spent my whole life in the capital district and the Adirondacks, aside from college in Manhattan.
Here's a fun tidbit of that area (and an effort to get us off of politics).. one of THE hottest "WAGS" (Wives and girlfriends of athletes), is a girl named Rachel Bush. She's married to Jordan Poyer of the Buffalo Bills. She was actually born in Newcomb, NY, not far from Plattsburg. Newcomb is one of those "one stoplight" type towns, with literally only a population of 500 people. So imagine THIS girl being from such a podunk type place..
I have an old coworker from there, and he basically says she was, and has been, the talk of the town. There's literally nothing up there.

Damn, this was 25 years ago, so I would’ve missed her lol. Actually rented a house outside Rouses Point, which is the very last little town you get to before entering Canada north and Vermont east. We spent a lot of time on Lake Champlain during the summers, and renting cabins in the Adirondacks. Hit up Montreal a few times. Winter damn near shuts the non tourist areas down up there. One place I did enjoy was Burlington, Vermont, about 40 minutes from the NY border. Nice little college town nestled between the mountains and the lake. Loved Lake Placid, but was totally shocked by how small it is. Still can’t believe they had the Olympics there — twice! Stunningly beautiful area though. Nice, done the drive up to Montreal a few times.
Burlington is super nice. Lots of good food and drink up there, and if you're into skiing, you got several top mountains within an hour, 90 min.
Lake Placid is great, too.. but you're right, it's pretty much just that one strip on Mirror Lake. It's amazing that they hosted the Olympics there, as it really does seem like a town that doesn't have much going on. I imagine hosting the Olympics is what MADE that town, and not the other way around.
Everything in the ADKs is pretty nice. I could definitely retire up there

Right? I think that's the hottest one I've seen. Just cracks me up thinking about how she came from this small mountain town. Imagine your graduating HS class, which has like 7 people, and she's one of them lolol. Half that town has no teeth, and then there's Rachel freaking Bush driving around.
What’s the name of that downtown area in Burlington? It’s downtown. Looks pretty simple and old school. But there’s a huge mall below it. Market Street?

it would be difficult to survive knowing someone called me a snowflake, but I don’t know if I will watch the Olympics. People in this country give a lot of virtue signaling lip service to things such as the climate, concentration camps, human trafficking, etc. But, if it takes more than a bumper sticker and a demand that the government fix it, we don’t have much resolve. While we claim to respect sacrifice, we don’t want to sacrifice anything. I suspect if Nazi Germany existed today, we may reject its ways at dinner parties and in tweets, but not much more. You can call this political, but it would be better if you could just prove that Uyghurs were not being abused by the Chinese government. Then, we would not have to pretend to care, anymore. Not that refraining from watching the Olympics will do any good, but sports making money by coddling the Chinese government is getting old.

Any chance you've been to Quebec City? Had a few friends go recently and they raved about it. I never knew anything other than Montreal really existed on "this" side of Canada.. But when I looked it up I realized it's my next place to go visit. Like a piece of Europe in the Northeast.
My Canada trips were brief. We’d drive up to Montreal (Old Mont), party, get a room, and drive back the next day. The strip clubs were amazing. It was a couple hours drive at most (like you, some of those times I don’t remember). We did drive up the river to QC once. So beautiful. All of Quebec is. Nice man, Nice! I have to be honest, posting here for years, it's always nice to talk to someone who knows upstate NY. I don't have a ton of common ground with most posters here, aside from who we root for, so I'm always excited to hear from NYers, past or present.
Funny story about "those" strip clubs.. and they are amazing for anyone who hasn't been.. but we went to the wrong one on accident when we were like 22. I was trying to find Club Super Sexe, and some other generic place pulled us in by asking us if we "liked tits and beer", so of course we went in.
And it was sketchy as all hell. Not entirely convinced there wasn't some form of sex trafficking going on. And a buddy of mine had never really been to a strip club, so he didn't understand that when the song changes, they charge you again. Turns out he racked up like $700. We tried to contest it and I have some good fighters in my group, but the owners brought out too many workers for us.. so we had to just chip in and pay for our friend. We were looking at broken knee caps if we didnt.
This is the best strip club story I've ever heard. I drove up to Toronto once and I think the first two things I saw after I crossed the border in Detroit were a titty bar and a cigar store with "CUBANS" in the biggest letters I've ever seen on a building that size. This was like 25 years ago so things may have changed.

Not surprisingly, Norway already has an early lead in the medal count with 2 golds. Women's cross country ski event, and a mixed biathlon relay.
After a quick look it appears that today's events are lots of snowboarding and figure skating. Hard pass on both.

Besides ncaa tournament basketball the winter olympics are my favorite watch. It's the only time I watch hockey. The women beating Canada and taking the gold last olympics was one of my favorite all time moments

Cheating judges, American born skiers on China’s team, and no fans makes this unwatchable.
As much as I love the Olympics, I find myself having no interest this time around. Still cannot believe they are being held in CHINA.
Watched the 15 year-old Russian figure skater. She was amazing. Saw the Swede win the long track speed skate. That was exciting. That is all.
I don’t know the specifics, but, yes. There are plenty of references to it in the area. I attended a few shows at a race track outside Plattsburgh called Airborne Speedway. The track sits on the same land, or very close to, that was formerly where the base was located.
I wouldn't mind figure skating.. but can't get past the fluff.. the theatrics, the fact that it's half "dance", Johnny Weir speaking ..

Weir does a good job. I feel like he knows the sport from a commentator perspective as well as anyone.
So, explain why Eileen Gu wants to compete for China? I know that USA athletes sometimes go to compete for countries when they cannot make the USA team, but this seems odd. What is the end game? Cash? Influence?
This. When Archie Bunker talked about “fairies”, I wasn’t even sure what he meant at the time. Now I realize he was talking about Johnny Weir. The guy knows his stuff, but damn. Once he realized he would never be fired, no matter how far he went with it, he’s taken it to another level. He makes the finest ladies on Kentucky Derby day look masculine.
