How will we know which one to use when more than one is available ? This is assuming the FDA approves more than one. Personal choice, doctor recommendation, L4 , SPS consensus ? WTH

I should think the phase III data will give indications as to which vaccines have better effectiveness and fewer side effects.

That being said, I imagine the main factor, at least initially, will be availability. You will probably have to take whatever vaccine is in supply at your location at any given time.

AstraZeneca has been out in front preselling theirs... I think Japan has already pre-bought around 120 Million Doses.

Doesn’t matter. I won’t be taking any of them until I see how many of you guys become zombies, robots or veggies after taking them. ****

There will be multiple vaccines that show efficacy, and multiple vaccines will allow the supply to ramp up much more quickly. Some of the new ones are made in an entirely different way from traditional vaccines (don't need a chicken egg per dose, for example). I'm doing the Pfizer trial right now, which is an mRNA type and they've had good data so far. However, it has to be frozen until right before use. In a 3rd world country, that could present a real problem if they don't have the infrastructure to keep it frozen during transport. I think the Oxford one doesn't need to be frozen, so it may be the best candidate under those conditions, but it uses human cold adenovirus, so for somewhere that has high exposure to the common cold, it may not be as effective.

Having lots of these being developed by private companies in different countries is a double-edged sword - good thing that lots of independent labs are trying different ways of getting to the goal, but they aren't sharing data in the same way academic research does, because it is propriety. Big question will be at what point the FDA says the data is sufficient to make the vaccine available. My study is supposed to run for 2 years. That would be irresponsible as hell to wait that long if there is evidence of efficacy. On the other hand, if they approve it in say 6 months, it means we won't know what it does to people past that point, what if I grow a damn tail at one year in? Availability will vary by country then, based on regulatory caution. Russia, for example, had very limited data on their vaccine before they made it available, because they decided possible immunity was worth the risk of not knowing about long term efficacy or side effects. I imagine the FDA will show a little more caution.

The speed at which multiple candidates (with positive data) has emerged is pretty breathtaking.

Do we have anti-body tests that are advanced enough that they may help one decide which vaccine may be most effective based on existing antibodies one may already have ? I had a severe adenovirus back in Nov. and now you've got me wondering ?
