Thought I'd give it a couple of days before posting to let the usual baseball bitchfest club a chance to subside some. I'll start by saying I was able to make it to the Friday & Saturday games this past weekend, listened Sunday, and watched the Thursday ESPNU game 2 weeks ago with TN.

This team's talent is definitely improved. There are literally only 2 players from last year that would start this season: Vickerson & Parks. But as one of my buddies said, with this year's injury luck, Parks would be in traction and only able to move his left pinky finger. The only other guy from last year who would play even a limited or similar role is Jaron Sheperd as a late inning defensive sub who starts once a weekend. Injuries have been a killer, but we're seeing some real intestinal fortitude from these guys to keep battling, playing close games, and finding ways to win. I think it says a lot that we've only been swept once this season. *knocks on wood* That's not to say the SEC record is where we'd like it to be, but we're once again competitive and have gotten back into the Top 25. I'm really impressed, considering our injury situation.

Stratton is damn near unhittable right now. Butch deserves a ton of credit. As I pointed out to my buddies, the scariest thing about him right now and that bodes well for his future MLB development imo, is that he's pretty much abandoned his plus 12-6 curveball this season that was his strikeout pitch the last 2 seasons. The slider everyone is raving about was added by Butch AFTER he got on campus. He's using the change, which is his 4th best pitch, as his 3rd pitch this season. It's not often you see a pitcher come out of college with 3 plus pitches, but Stratton will. His mental approach this year also appears to be much more aggressive and he appears to be a guy who wants the ball when it matters.

Graveman didn't have his best stuff, especially early, Saturday. But he's another guy that has improved tremendously under Butch. When he's right, there just won't be many balls in the air. I don't know why so many people think he isn't very good. I've always thought he could be at least a Sunday guy for us. I felt awful for Routt Saturday. He had a nice relief appearance going, made a pitch to get out of the inning, and Norris airmails a routine throw to Rea. I'm really hoping he's getting the kinks worked out in the pen and can return to the rotation soon. We desperately need him to be that quality 2nd/3rd starter we all know he can be. He's been one of my biggest disappointments this season.

Pollo was on fire Sunday. I wish we could use him more out of the pen, but our injury situation in the OF just hasn't allowed it. I'd like to see Ben Bracewell get to pitch more, maybe close once a weekend. But overall, I'm very pleased with the pitching staff as a whole. Bottom line, Butch has proven he was the right hire and deserves credit. He's recruited dramatically better talent and coached it up to be quality SEC pitching.

The D is very solid, especially our middle infield. The game ending double play we turned Friday night was Sportscenter Top 10 Plays quality. I still have no idea how we got it turned. One of the best DP's I've ever seen turned, from Frazier's glove toss, to Frost's turn at 2B, to Rea's stretch. Can't say enough about CT's D in CF this weekend. His 2 diving catches were amazing. Speaking of CT, I hope we shut him down for the season. There's no sense in risking his long-term health after a second injury to his shoulder at this point. I love the guts he's displayed trying to play through it, but he hasn't been the same player, most noticeably at the plate. It had to be affecting his swing.

Norris's nightmare inning at 3B Saturday was awful. But it's hard for me to be too pissed at him when he's out there on one knee because he knows we need him in the lineup. It sucks that Porter apparently is so bad on D we can't put him in the field and DH Norris. Same thing for Brent Brownlee playing on one leg in RF. One area that has dramatically improved under Cohen is toughness and the desire to play through injuries.

Offensively, we're struggling. No way around it. But I don't see it as a talent issue. As I pointed out above, we're definitely more talented this season than any other under Cohen. The problem is inexperience. When you're replacing 8 starters in the lineup, you're going to struggle. Plus, it's a BIG jump for some of these guys. They're essentially facing High A ball pitchers for the first time in their lives. But we're hitting balls hard and having some very good ABs. We also have some decent situational hitting success. Friday night was a great example of that, when we we first-and-third the Bears to death. The guy I'm most disappointed in this season is Hunter Renfroe. For all the hype surrounding him, he clearly hasn't put it together to be a force in our lineup. Other than the Friday Arkansas game, he really hasn't done much. You can see the talent there, but he's got to put it together. But that's part of the problem with a young, inexperienced team in general.

Another problem facing our offense is Dudy Noble itself. I know that sounds like an excuse, but it's just the plain truth. There were at least 2 homers in 10 of the other 11 SEC parks that our guys hit this weekend that just died and didn't get out. The one that immediately comes to mind for me is Slauter's AB after his 2-run shot on Saturday. He absolutely crushed the ball into the RF alley. And there's no doubt in my mind he got it all. My immediate reaction was to jump out of my seat because of how it sounded and jumped off the bat. Then it just absolutely died in the alley. Porter's Thursday extra-inning out against UT 2 weeks ago was the same way. We've got several guys who would have more homers if they played in a different park. I've got mixed feelings about moving in the fences, but I'm moving ever closer to saying it's something we need to do. It blows when you see our guys absolutely murder a ball and have it just die in the OF for an out. Porter & Rea should both be 8-10 homer guys at minimum, but aren't because they play half their games at DNF.

My loen beef is the continued play of Matthew Britton. He's clearly overmatched at the plate. It's to the point where I'm just hoping for a walk or HBP when he's up there, because that's about the best possible outcome. And that's really more a reflection on Cohen's one recruiting failure thus far, signing 2 good middle infield players. I love Frazier. He's going to be a VERY good player for us. But Frost/Britton would barely play, much less start, anywhere else in the SEC. Hopefully we can get that squared away soon, though. I don't know much about Philip Casey (maybe Todd can help me out here), but maybe he's the guy we're looking for at 2B. If nothing else, we should be hard after a JUCO 2B for next season.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with where we are as a program. We're clearly improving and upgrading the talent level across the board. It's going to suck not having Stratton next season, but it's a good problem to have. I normally hate saying "wait 'til next year," but I feel it's true with this team. Our inexperience is killing us. We're playing a lot of close games and coming up a little bit short, which is the mark of a young, inexperienced team. The good news is all the struggles we're going through and PT they're getting will pay off down the road. We're going to fight you every step of the way every night, regardless of who is in the lineup, which is a reflection on Cohen. I've said for a long time that teams tend to take on the personality of their coach, and our team has clearly done that the last couple of seasons. I also don't think anyone is very eager to play us these last few weeks this season. We're starting to find ways to win close games, whether it's timely situational hitting, taking advantage of the other team's mistakes, or having a sensational pitching performance combined with great D. We aren't where we want to be, but Cohen definitely has the ship headed in the right direction.

I only have one disagreement- and that's about Hunter Renfroe. Reason is he was incredibly raw when he got here. He has made a lot of strides since he has been at MSU. Last year as a freshman, he was overmatched and he hit around .100. This year, you can tell he is starting to come into his own at times as you said. I think it's only a matter of time before he puts it all together.

Some other comments- About Porter and his defense. He's more of a first baseman than a third baseman, so we pretty much have to bench Rea to get him on the field, and Rea is a better defender. We miss Nick Flair- he would be a much better option to replace Norris than Porter or anyone else, but guess what? He's hurt. After those two, you're looking at Frost, Brayden Jones, Casey, and etc.

As far as your comment about the middle infield- I agree, and I think we did something about that today by getting a commitment from Alex Detz from Cuesta College in California. He played on the same summer league team in California that Adam Frazier did- they were both the same middle infield, so they should have some chemistry from playing together. My hope is he will come in and shore up the middle infield because I don't have much faith in Britton, Casey, or Frost right now long term. We'll see- they will all compete in the fall and spring next year along with Brett Pirtle and Pierson Waring and then William DuPont as well. Detz is my favorite right now to win the job next year. Based on my research, I think he is going to be an upgrade at second base for us.

I enjoyed reading that.<div>
</div><div>And yes, injuries and inexperience are killing us.. particularly injuries. Almost our entire lineup is hurt to some extent now:</div><div>
</div><div>C: Slaughter- He's stayed pretty healthy, although I'm sure he's hurting considering we have no other options here and he has to play every game</div><div>1B: Rea- Hurt his arm (or was it shoulder?) this weekend, but he's having to play through it</div><div>2B: Frost/ Britton- Healthy</div><div>SS: Frazier- He's been banged up but playing through it</div><div>3B: Norris- Dislocated his kneecap, so he's essentially playing on one leg</div><div>OF: Stark, Bradford, and Henderson are all likely done for the year (although Stark might still be able to pitch a little), not to mention Brownlee's playing on one knee out there.</div><div>
</div><div>Flair is also hurt, as are Bracewell, Watson, and even Porter is banged up. I've never seen anything like it. No team can overcome that and still have a good offense, especially considering that we were already inexperienced to begin with. I'm frustrated with the way the season has gone offensively, but you can't be mad at the guys out there playing. It's clear that guys like Britton, Fullerton, Casey, Jones, etc. aren't ready, but they are fighting their asses off and I can certainly respect that.</div><div>
</div><div>What all this really says to me is that we've come a LONG way pitching-wise. After considering in that four of our top 5-6 pitchers coming into the year have struggled or been injured (Mitchell, Routt, Bracewell, and Reed), I am amazed at how much quality depth is in this staff (not to mention it is young depth). Everyone minus Stratton, Reed, and Routt come back, so I expect them to be just as good, if not better, next year. Butch has earned every penny as he and the pitching staff have essentially kept this team competitive.</div>

If so, I wouldn't automatically assume he will be an upgrade over anyone we currently have.

I disagree on Britton to an extent. He, Fullerton and Casey clearly aren't ready to be playing significant minutes, but Britton has started to make contact more often. He just seems to hit the ball right to someone every time he hits it hard.

Todd, who do see getting cut next year? Girodo? Busby? Jones? We are going to have to make room for quite a few guys since we don't really lose anyone.

For me, the disappointment is more in how Cohen hyped him up than anything. He's definitely improved this year over last year. I think with all the PT he's gotten this year, another year of summer ball, and one more fall practice, we'll really see him take off next season. At least I hope so. He's got the potential to bat anywhere from 3-5 for us and be a double digit homer guy, which is something we definitely need.

As for Porter, you're dead on that he's mostly a 1B and that he's at DH because Rea's glove is better. I just wish he had another position so we could get Norris some time at DH without significantly downgrading the D by having to play Porter in LF or at 3B.

I really like Tyler Fullerton. I think he's going to be a BIG asset for us in the not too distant future. He plays good D and very, very fast.

Good news about our 2B signing. I doubted Cohen would be content with what we had. If Detz is even close to Frazier, we'll be in damn good shape up the middle next season.

Hopefully we can get him into the training room this week since we don't have any midweek games and get him ready to go this weekend. We need his glove probably worse than his bat, and we desperately need his bat. He bailed out Frost & Britton several times in the 2 games I went to this past weekend.

I thought Cohen & Co had said Henderson would probably only miss a couple of weeks. If so, he *should* be available this weekend. I'd love to see him get some time at 2B, but apparently we see him as an OF only right now. But with CT down, we need him out there.

Stark can definitely still pitch. He's another guy I'd like to see get a shot at closing some games. His stuff is really good. I wish he were healthy enough to get some time in the OF, because he's another guy we need out there now that CT is out again. Plus, he's one of the few semi-experienced players we had coming into the season, so we miss that, too.

Didn't realize Frazier was banged up. Still, he's probably our best all around player right now. He's got great pitch selection at the plate and rarely has a bad AB. He's also leading the SEC in walks. Plus, he probably has the best glove in the middle of the field that we've had since Maniscalco. You're right about the injuries, though. While I think about all the starters that are hurt, I forget about a guy like Flair who went down but could be helping us. This has to be the worst year we've had injury-wise in a LONG time.

Routt should be back next season. I don't see him going anywhere in terms of the Draft, and he redshirted with the injury a couple of seasons ago. He should be a senior next season, unless I'm missing something.

1. Our pitching has been stellar, especially Stratton. Kudos to the pitching staff for sure
2. Frazier is a player and we're lucky to have him
3. I'm not a big fan of the open batting stances that a lot of our guys are using. A few of our right-handed battersare actually stepping toward 3rd base which prevents any power generation
4. I assume that we have guys in the batting lineup that don't normally play due to our injury situation.I honestly don't know since I haven't followed us very closely this year. What struck me though is the lack of size in our lineup. Rea is the notable exception. He needs to be directed to DWS to help shore up our OL. Dude can't hit the curveball. We have too many "slot receivers" and too few "wideout" size players. My son's 11 year old baseball team recently played a team here in GA with a kid that was literally 6'2" 195 lbs at age 12. And he could hit the baseball like nobody's business. We need some size (and power) in the batting lineup.
5. Kudos to the coaching staff and players (especially the pitching staff) for finding ways to win the past 2 weeks. We have to start hitting the baseball though or our season will end too soon. I honestly don't know how we can put a guy into our lineup who's batting under .150 with a metal bat in his hands. C'mon now. That is just plain horrible.

I agree on Todd's assessment of Renfroe. I am looking for much bigger things from him in the future. Also, I firmly believe that Bradford could not have made that ridiculous catch on Sunday. Renfroe made that one about 10' from me and I still cannot believe he did it. It took every bit of his size, agility and height to pull that off. One of the top 2 or 3 catches I have ever seen at DNF. And I have seem many of them since 1978.

I don't think all is lost on Britton, either. I just feel like he will develop well over the next year. The dead horse, injuries, still befuddles me. I have never seen an athletic team, in any sport and at any level, have to deal with what this team has with regard to injuries. It is similar to what the UM basketball team had 2 or 3 years ago with all the knee injuries that ended several players' season before it even started. This may be even worse than that. It is uncanny. But that is the hand Cohen was dealt and he is playing it out to the bitter end as well as anyone could.

Another thing. With regard to the fences at DNF. I just don't understand the logic here. You can't convince me that the extra offense we MIGHT see from shorter fences would not be offset by the same extra offense from our opponents. Case in point, the Renfroe catch on Sunday. That ball was 2 feet or more out of the park when he snagged it. Bring the fences in and he would have never even moved from his centerfield position when the ball left the bat it would have been so far out. What we need to concentrate on is putting more pressure on the opposing defense, well hit ground balls, line drives, solid contact, square up, etc. Not hitting balls over a shallower outfield fence. But I guess everyone has a different opinion on that subject. REALLY, REALLY need 2 this weekend and that should just about punch our ticket to Hoover.

All things equal over this season, yeah it'll probably even out. But if the power hitters in the region go elsewhere then we are disadvantaged on the road with less power guys, and when we do play those guys at home they will hit a couple more than us... just by having the few more power guys than us

He hit .331 as a freshman.

California JUCO baseball is pretty strong- much, much stronger than Mississippi.

For a reference point- he played this summer with Adam Frazier in California.

Frazier hit .333 and Detz his .301 this past summer. I think that might give people an idea of what kind of hitter he might be. I'm also impressed with his defense and the fact that he has 8 stolen bases in 9 attempts, and he actually hits clean up for his team. And that was a wood bat league that Frazier and Detz played in.

As far as guys getting cut- obviously it's way too early to tell, but I can't see Girodo, Busby or Jones getting cut to be honest. Girodo will be a senior and he has actually done OK when facing a left handed batter and then coming out, Busby is still learning how to pitch- he has been a catcher for most of his career, and Brayden is not hitting any worse than Casey and I think he could be a good role player for us as he matures as a pinch hitter. We have a lot of walk-ons coming in, especially second base types, and I think we're going to see some middle infielder possibly leave and maybe a catcher or two because we have four. Probably what will happen is we will allow everyone that wants to be a part of the team to stay on, but not put a couple of guys on the official roster- like Tanner Gaines last year- and allow them to keep coming out as much as they would like to be a part of the team. Usually, the players that leave part ways because they see that they aren't going to get playing time and leave on their own rather than get cut by the coaches. Although, the coaches may recommend that a player go to a junior college for a year or two, the player still usually has some say in the decision and they make the final call themselves.

Usually when the staff cuts a player, it's because of disciplinary reasons like Ethan Bright a couple of years ago.
