Offense:
1. Can't say enough about how well the OLine played. Gave Russell a lot of time to read and make throws. Got some very good push in the run game. Good depth here.

2. Liked what I saw from Justin Malone. He's going to be very good for us. And it's nice to have a guy we can rely on if/when Tobias goes down aGAIN. At least he's already splitting snaps to hopefully keep Tobias healthy.

3. I like our stable of running backs. Perk has really improved as an every down guy. He's slippery, but showed nice power to break tackles on his TD run.

4. I'm a big fan of Josh Robinson. The guy is an absolute bull. Runs hard and through guys. Always seems to fall forward. He should be our short yardage guy. Put him on the watch list for breakout offensive player.

5. Dak in the Tebow Package and in the redzone is going to be fun to watch. Would love to see he & Josh Robinson in there together in short yardage situations.

6. Marcus Green had a career day. I was dog cussing him after his drop to kill the opening drive. But he put it behind him and played his *** off the rest of the game. His first TD was awesome. Loved seeing Jermaine "Business Decision" Whitehead get torched then drug the final 5 yards into the endzone.

7. Our WRs will continue to progress as the season goes. Brewster is doing a good job with these guys. I'm a little disappointed in Morrow so far, though. Gotta find a way to get him more involved.

8. Hurry back Malcolm Johnson. Our TE depth is in trouble now that Hill is out for a while. Anyone know who the 4th string guys is? And how is it we always seem to get multiple injuries at 1 position?

9. Tyler Russell....WOW. The guy was as cool as a cucumber back there. He took a sack and a couple of bad hits by holding the ball a little too long, but that was really the only criticism I've got. His throw to Tubby in the middle of 3 defenders was NFL caliber. Loved his carry on the option on the opening drive. He made a nice little move with his shoulders to get the pitch man to commit to Perk, then stuck his foot in the ground and cut it up for a nice gain. He also showed very good mobility within the pocket and an ability to extend plays and give his WRs time to get open. If he plays like that the rest of the season, we're in for a VERY fun year.

Defense:

1. This unit will finish at least in the Top 10 nationally, maybe higher. We're very, very deep. We rotated almost 2 whole units the entire game with little, if any, dropoff. Deepest D since '99.

2. Matt Wells is the most improved player from last year to this year. He's been huge so far.

3. When it comes to football IQ, Cam is the smartest player we've had in a LONG time. He sniffs out plays as well as anyone I've seen. His call to get us shifted over on McCalebb's run on 2nd & goal was awesome. I don't think many realize just how much losing him next season is going to hurt. And he's clearly the leader of the LB corps.

4. Our DBs are filthy. Banks will break the career INT record. Slay on the opposite corner makes this the best tandem since you-know-who. Doesn't seem like I've seen much from Whitley, but then I look at the stats Bob had today and he's one of the team leaders in tackles. Broomfield to safety has been a good move for us. He's transitioned well and will make some big plays there before the season is over.

5. Slay's INT return was sick. For a second I thought he was going to take it to the house. Literally the last Aubie that could've stopped him did. He gets past him, turn out the lights, put 6 on the board.

6. Our DL is ridiculous, especially the DTs. We rotate 2 whole DLines the way we did in '99. And we can rotate 3 whole units at DT without any dropoff whatsoever. They got all sorts of pressure on Frazier. I know it didn't result in many sacks, but the guy was running for his life most of the day.

7. Auburn had 39 rushes for 91 yards. Domination at the point of attack to stuff the run.

8. Quay is my favorite new freshman. He's huge, but he looks like a LB. And it ain't right a guy that big can move that fast. I see why Mullen & Co. think he'll be a 3-year player. Wouldn't be surprised to see him start before the season's over. And that says a lot more about Quay than Virges or P.J. Jones.

9. Denico is already making an impact. He didn't get a sack this week, but he's getting pressure. The sacks are going to come, it's just a matter of time.

Special Teams:

1. Let's face it: This is a glaring weakness. I hate to say it, but I think Mullen needs to fire himself and hire a ST coach. At the very least, he should let The Kang evaluate all future kicking recruits.

2. Devon Bell sucks. He shouldn't be on the team and open tryouts should've been held for kicker today. There has to be someone on campus who's better than the guys we have. If we don't fix this quickly, it's going to be a disappointing season. We'll need the 9 points he's missed so far aGAINST Bama, LSU, etc.

3. Why did we keep kicking it to McCalebb? That's asking for trouble.

4. If Bump never returns another punt, it'll be too soon.

5. We still lack any explosiveness in the return game outside of Tubby. Why don't we give him a chance to return punts? I'd also like to see Slay get a chance in the return game. He seems to have a knack for it if his INT returns are any indication.

As always, feel free to comment.

Got a ton to look forward to from the OL. Paul Jones has a story today on Tobias where he basically says that he plans to apply for a 6th yr of eligibility at the end of this season. Could potentially bring every bit of this OL experience back next year.

There should be a rule that you have to post your thoughts on a game within 24 hours of it ending. Anything later means you're just regurgitating what someone else said.

I take most of Sunday off....

And I had other stuff going on today, so it took me a while to re-watch the game on DVR and confirm what I was thinking. My thoughts are my own. Always have, been, always will be. If you think they're regurgitated, then piss off and don't read.

the answer to #8 on offense is rFr Rufus Warren who did see some action saturday. He's got a good future but he's young. Getting Brandon Hill or Malcolm Johnson back will be crucial at TE

Its just crazy to me that just LAST year we were freaking out about LB play going into the season. Now just a year removed from that our LBers are playing like ballers and we were able to Redshirt 2 4* players. It really is amazing the depth that Mullen has built.

You want someone with very good hands and decision making returning punts as many should be fair-caught. Banks did a great job Saturday with a lot of traffic around him. I am afraid Tubby would have fumbled one or two.

I am afraid that Mullen doesn't take special teams as seriously as he should. We all know from the Jackie years how important it can. Made up for a lot of lackluster offense. Bell will be fine; apparently he does will in practice, just gets big case of nerves in game situation.

I almost never worry about LB play. Seriously, name the last time we didn't have a solid LB corps. The state produces a ton of LB talent and we generally have a scheme that's very LB friendly. But it really is amazing how deep we are there now. We can rotate 5-6 guys legitimately at this point: Cam, Skinner, Wells, McKinney, and Bohanna. And as you point out, we've got two young guys redshirting who should push to start next fall.

The most exciting part of all on D is the depth across the board. Sure, we lose almost our entire secondary. But I like what I've seen from Love and Jiles so far. And Banks raves about Calhoun. But our front 7 is extremely deep and relatively young, meaning we should be good there for a long time. And if you're good in the front 7, it makes it easier on the back 4. The future of the D is very bright, but I really think this year could be a special year on that side of the ball.

Good, that means we don't have to burn a redshirt. I was actually a little concerned about that. From what Mullen said, I expect Hill to be out several weeks. I hope Marcus Green can hold up to the huge increase in playing time he's about to get.

I've got no problem with Banks back there. And he has a bit of a knack for the return game. But the best teams have a guy that is sure handed AND explosive. Look at Joe Adams at UPig last year. I also think Lewis is over his fumble problems. He deserves a second chance.

I think Mullen takes special teams seriously. Hell, that's the whole reason he named himself ST coach. He wanted the team to know how important that part of the game is. I just think he doesn't know much about special teams or evaluating kickers and/or return men.

And I don't give a damn if Bell hits every last FG in practice. It's what you do in games that matter. If he's really that big a head case, he shouldn't be on the field in the first place. Kickers are notorious head cases as it is. If you know the guy can't handle it mentally, then sit him and go find someone who can handle it. Bell has 1 more game as far as I'm concerned. If he misses a FG at Troy Saturday, we should move on to Egan or hold open tryouts. Hell, Mike Leach did that at TX Tech one season and it worked just fine. No reason it shouldn't work for us.

While I totally agree with you on Cam part, love watching the guy play. If you look at the tape, Slay was really the first person to point out the jet sweep to McCaleb. Lawerence saw him and started pointing it out to everyone. Small potatoes, and Cam is almost always the guy pointing out where the play is going. I am encouraged that Slay has that kind of awareness too. He should be starting at corner. I think they both should be able to find sunday jobs.

What we are seeing is the payback from a coach that recruits players who will be able to stay in school, redshirts the majority of them, and spends time developing the talent in the weight room and on the field. So even though we aren't getting all the 4 and 5 star recruits we are starting to see three and four year guys in the program stepping up and doing their job properly. Auburn is doing the exact opposite, going for the high star, low chance of lasting guys and they have had so much attrition that they can hardly field a team at this point.

Glad we beat Auburn, but I think they are really bad this year so it doesn't give me tons of wool.

yep, I just meant I feel more confident with him on the island in man coverage over Broom. Broom looks good at SS so it makes us better all around. That is an awesome secondary with both of them out there.

To me, it also says a lot about our ability to evaluate players as a staff. Sure, we might sign a 3-star guy, but I think we're projecting him much differently. Hell, look no further than Johnthan Banks. He was an unevaluated 1 star coming out of East Webster. But our staff saw something special in him. Now we've developed him into arguably the best corner in the nation. This might be the best staff we've ever assembled from a developmental standpoint. They've done an outstanding job getting the most out of every player we have.

Huh? I think you just meant that you didn't know who our starting corner was...
