Woody and Tyler Russell

From this weekend: An acquaintance talked to Tyler's dad this weekend and he said that Tyler gets a note - a hand written note - from someone at MSU on a daily basis. They come from Croom, Strat, AD flunkies, players, coaches, non-athlete students, etc...these are on top of the typical Road Runner notes. BUT, he has NEVER gotten one from Woody. The family is not a fan of Woody, and they welcome a change at the OC position. He is still firm in his commitment. I will not make a Doug Buckles-type statement at this time.

Secondly, the information mentioned above was relayed to Byrne, and his comment was, "That's very interesting." And he turned about 3 shades of red. This was told to him in a skybox during the MTSU game on Saturday. He said he would get to the bottom of it, but that it won't matter in a few weeks' time.

Thirdly, Woody will step down due to "health reasons." He does have cancer and he has already had at least 2 surgeries. He will not be the OC next year, but will likely remain through the end of the season.

Fourth, look for Keenum to be announced as the "recommendation" of the IHL Board. The fight is obviously between the "Old Guard" of the Cigar Boys and Scott Ross. However, knowing Keenum for some time, I confidently say that he is not a "yes man" and Scott Ross will likely have no influence on any of his decisions. He has no fans on the faculty senate, but I will also venture to say that it won't take long for him to gain favor with them. He's just that kind of a guy...

Last, it has been told to me that most (if not all) of the Vice Presidents are now considered to be "Interim." This may be temporary and customary; I'm not sure. BUT, I was told that there are grumblings around the state that it is not appropriate to have VPs that do not have an advanced degree (PhD) or at least working on one. I know of at least one VP that falls into this category...

I guess it confirms what we already thought about most of that stuff.
I don't think I agree that all VPs should have PhDs. The VPs are basically plant managers; they have to be leaders, and be able to make a firm decision. A PhD would take 5 minutes to answer a yes or no question, and then you still wouldn't know the answer. And secondly, a PhD means you have a really strong knowledge of one really specific thing. How the hell does that help you manage a college? I can see this logic coming from professors who don't like having bosses who are lesser degreed.

....fighting such an illness, then I'm very sorry for him and I pray that he wins his fight. It's going to really bother me though, the question as to whether or not he would have been replaced if he was perfectly healthy. Knowing MSU, my instinct is that he would still be around next season. This also leads to another question. If the OC change is simply the result of being forced by an illness, then how much is going to really change under the new OC? To me this would mean that Crxxm still has intellectual control over the offense because in his mind he's not giving in to criticism(or the results on the field) and changing the offense for the better because of it. He'd just be putting another body in place to keep doing the same things that he's been doing for 5 years.

By the way, Tyler Russell is at least two years and a lot of technique work away from making an impact at MSU. I hope he stays with us, but there's a reason why every coach in the SEC isn't beating down his door to sign him.

You're correct about the Woody thing. What I fogot to mention was that Byrne has already talked to Croom about the offensive problems, and his reply (in short) was, "I am the ultimate OC...it isn't Woody's fault." So that statement goes to show (me) that whoever replaces Woody won't have much more success...unless Croom gives him control over the offense. If Croom maintains ultimate control, then we'll have more of the same...

I know UT, UA, and LSU all came knocking hard last spring and summer and he told them firmly that he was not interested in them at all. He literally did not give them a chance to offer because he told them he wasn't interested (but Saban did still verbally offer when he was over there this summer for a 7 on 7 comp with his team).

He may wind up taking some time to transition in, or even being a bust, but I really don't think so. I think he is going to be a damn good college QB and perhaps may get a shot to play on Sunday one day.

In the interest of full disclosure - he and his family are good friends - so I openly admit my bias and admit it may cloud my judgment. But that's the way I see it.

Goodnight.

about Russell. Anyone who thinks that he is going to come in next year and set the world on fire is dreaming. However , if brought along right he can be agood sec QB.,

My friends and I used to cringe every time we saw Bellard send Smith out on the field to COVER KICKS!

What a waste of a Freshman year.

based on what I've seen out of Tyson Lee the last few games I believe he is good enough to win with in the SEC even at his height. No, he is not All-SEC material but he's a better combination runner-passer than I think we've had in a long time at the position. Our main problem right now is the OLine and a deep threat at receiver. Lee is running for his life most of the time when he goes back to pass and we run block only marginally better. Number one priority is to find some way to improve the offensive line for next year. We also need one guy in the offense that defenses believe might be able to burn them deep and actually prove it once or twice. Otherwise teams will continue to cheat up on our short passing game and running game. Right now I just don't believe the QB position is the biggest problem with the offense.
