Man, I'm excited about this.

Why? Because I get to see some of the great players around the world play against MLB players that people may not know about. I want to see Yu Darvish for Japan- a lot of people consider him to be the best pitcher in the world. The Cubans are always a lot of fun to watch to. And I'm bitterly disappointed that Sung-Yeop Lee won't be playing for Korea. Lee hit an Asian record 56 home runs in the Korean League, and did quite well in the first World Baseball Classic.

I know a lot of Americans don't care about it, but the thing is, this isn't for America. It's for the world. Baseball has been way behind on the International scene for years now. This is definately a step in the right direction. This tournament is going to be seen in 200 countries.

And it's smart that MLB is doing this. I mean, what better way to evaluate some of these players like Darvish than have them play against other MLB players? You couldn't do that in the past. For example, the Cuban Leagues (Serie Nacional) used to use metal bats for years. I remember when Rey Ordonez defected, he was supposed to be "Ozzie Smith with power". That never happened becuase he couldn't adjust to the wood bats, although his defense was spectacular. Then you have some guys that can use this as kind of a try-out- see Pedro Martinez and Ivan Rodriguez among others. A good WBC could land them some more money.

And yeah, yeah I know someone could get hurt, but the fact of the matter is, they could get hurt in spring training to. Or taking clothes out of the dryer for that matter. At least the WBC has taken precautions like strict pitch counts to try to help.

Of course, I'll be pulling for Team USA, although I do kind of like Japan and Cuba to, and how can you not like Australia and South Africa? I'm actually disappointed that Israel doesn't have a team. But, I hope that the US has a better showing than last time. I think not having Dontrelle Willis and a 40 year old Al Leiter in the rotation is a good start as far as that is concerned. It will be fun to watch.

Here's the problem with this tournament. It's played in the winter. Hardly anybody cares about baseball at this time of year and none of the players have played a game or even practiced in 5 months. The quality of play is terrible, and understandably so. No player in his right mind is going to put a whole lot of effort getting ready to play in this when he's staring down a 7-month season starting immediately afterwards. If they want to make this thing relevant, what they need to do is lengthen the All-Star break to a full week and play this instead of (or possibly in conjunction with) the All-Star game.

I think maybe his parents were, but I'm not even sure about that. I think he tries to get people to hate him.

I highly doubt the Astros' owner and manager would be thrilled to have Roy Oswalt out there throwing a hundred pitches for a that tournament in the middle of baseball season. This tournament is a joke because you are never going to be able to see what it would really be like. I heard on ESPN radio that Japan and China have been practicing for five months yet the USA is only going to use of couple of weeks of spring ball to get ready? More than likely we will probably get put out early once again.

a few years back for something like a "World Hockey Classic." Or maybe they did it for the Olympics, which would be understandable.

Seeing that spring training is going on, i am guessing many baseball fans care about baseball this time of year

I am very excited about this mainly because I love to watch baseball. I like the concept and it is fun seeing the passion of the foreign fans and as you said some of the talent that we have not heard of before. I enjoy watching the different styles of baseball, I really enjoy watching the japanese play. I can't stand to see Cuba win though, oh well. I do think the U.S. is poised to do much better but who knows. Last time was a huge case of "That's Baseball"

basketball player that was born in the U.S.A. If he plays for the Irish w/out being Irish and against the U.S.A. then I have no love for the kid. If you want to play for another country against your own, then nut up and gain citizenship and start paying taxes there. Oh, you don't want to be a citizen of X and be subject to their tax code?

First of all, remember that this is not the Olympics. So, their rules don't apply.

But under the rules, you can play for a country if you or you have some family that has ties to that country. The rules are pretty lax so that a team like Italy could be stocked with MLB players. Your family came over to the US from Italy in 1825? Welcome to Team Italy!

You also are not bound to that country, or even have to live, or to go further even have set foot in that country.

A-Rod is a good example. He was born in Miami and played for USA in 2006, but I believe his family is from the Dominican Republic, so he is also eligible to play for them as well, and actually was pressured by the Dominican players to play on their team.

Other examples include Nomar Garciaparra for Mexico in 2006 and Mike Piazza for Italy in 2006.

Techically Albert Pujols- who grew up in Kansas City and is a US citizen- could play for the US team. I'd like to see that as a Cardinals fan.

I don't know that you were implying this, but even the IOC doesn't really legislate what is citizenship, but leaves it up to the individual countries. It seems that in 2004, Greece was looking for anyone to play on their Olympic baseball team--even if the only connection you had was that your grandparents lived there. They were given an automatic entry in because they were the host country (the US did not make it to the Olympics that year because of a loss in qualifying). A lot of minor leaguers from the US, who had hardly even been to Greece, played for the Greek national team.
