Netherlands vs. Uruguay. The Dutch looking to reach their first final since 1978. Uruguay looking to make the finals for the first time since winning their second title in 1950. Should be an interesting match up given that both teams are missing players due to yellow card suspension (De Jong and Van Der Wiel for the Dutch, Suarez for the Uruguayans).

Who is your pick to reach the finals? I think both teams will start out a little tentatively but both look to attack on the same side (the Dutch right with Robben and the Uruguayan left with Forlan). In the end, I see van Persie and Robben getting goals for a 2-0 Dutch win - the second coming late as Uruguay push for an equalizer.

Van Persie has been pretty bad all tournament. Coming off a second surgery in a little over 2 years is never a going to lead to good form. The Dutch have looked much better when they have taken him off and brought on Elia.

Anyways, I'm going 3-2 to the Dutch.

Uruguay is without Suarez, Lugano (their captain/defender), and Lodiero. That's a lot to overcome against a team like the Dutch. As some are expecting, I think Uruguay is going to sit back and play extremely defensive and hope they can get the match into penalty kicks. I think the Dutch get a goal close to halftime, and expand their lead in the 70-75th minute. Forlan will get one back for Uruguay late, but it won't be enough.

I predict there will be a lot of random kicking around the midfield, a lot of dives, half-a-dozen bad calls, three instances of a player missing a wide-open goal by ten feet, and the only goal(s) scored will be because a player accidentally finds himself alone with the ball five feet from goal.

I have watched a decent amount of the World Cup and I have enjoyed it. However, to watch these guys at half try to break down the game is actually quite sad. Here should be a repeatable script for the pre-game, half-time, and postgame report:
Insert team here will(did) attempt to possess the ball in their scoring end more than insert other team here and hope they get enough opportunities at goal so that one or two of them will(did) accidentally go in.

For anyone who talks about the equalizer, you're in America, it is called the tying goal. Also, anyone who uses the term "nil" deserves to be shot. It is zero or nothing.

Edited to add: I have noticed quite a few score reports with colons (even in this thread). This is American and we use dashes. 2-1, 1-0, 3-2 is acceptable. 2:1, 1:0, 3:2 is not.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy soccer, but we don't need all the faking. There is enough of that on the field.

if you enjoyed soccer (as you say), you wouldn't say this nonsense:

"I predict there will be a lot of random kicking around the midfield, a lot of dives, half-a-dozen bad calls, three instances of a player missing a wide-open goal by ten feet, and the only goal(s) scored will be because a player accidentally finds himself alone with the ball five feet from goal."

You deserve to be shot for your post. Since we're in America and all, right?

ETA: There has actually been a lot of attackingin this game. And that goal was b/c he wasstanding alone 5 feet from the goal right? That was probably the best goal of the WorldCupso far. And flops? That Dutch guy just got kicked in the face, but he should take it like a man huh?

That was crazy. I thought the ref was going to let that go until Uruguay got the equalizer. If I was a Dutch fan I would have been shitting a brick right there. I can't believe how much time they ran over the allotted 3 minutes.

They got a full extra two minutes. The TVs have no sound here but a coworker was listening and said the announcers didn't even know what was going on.

Hup, Holland, Hup!

The Netherlands never had a sustained possession late in extra time which was partly why it went as long as it did, and the yellow card delayed things too.

It was almost like he wanted the game to go into extra minutes. I know the ref can extend stoppage time if needed but 2 whole minutes is waaaay too much.

he was just making up for the second dutch goal. passive offsides isn't passive anymore if the keeper waits to see if you play it before diving after the ball.

yet another blown call on a goal.

and sounds like they got their little feelings hurt. Maybe you should roll around on the ground for the next five minutes writhing in pain ... and that will make it all better.

They announced 3 minutes of stoppage time, but then there was a lot of additional clock stoppages during the stoppage time. There was the Uruguay goal, the Dutch substitution and the long ******** arguing by the Dutch players over a penalty call. The truth is, ifanything, the ref didn't allow enough additional stoppage time.

As for the passive offside comment by jsireland. I think passive offside is the most ******** rule in the sport. But since it is a rule, he's right. It should have been called there.

with backward running time and a stop/start button for when play stopped on the field. Then again, I guess they can't afford to have more than on-field referee.

But yeah, just buy a damn scoreboard and have the referee signal the scoreboard operator when to stop and start the clock. That is the way they do it in college soccer in the USA. When the clock hits 45:00 (or 90:00), the game is over. The FIFA way leaves way too much discretion to the referee.
