We're just a few days away from the start of the greatest sporting event on planet Earth. So many questions to be answered:

Can C. Ronaldo get the sand out of his ****** long enough to lead Portugal out of the Group of Death?
Are the Italians actually using a South African nursing home as their home base?
Which team's manager is more insane: France or Argentina?
Will the SixPack melt down if the Germans win and someone posts about it two days after the fact?

At any rate, who is your pick to win it all?

For me, you can't go wrong picking either Spain or Brazil but I'm gonna go with my gut and pick the Netherlands. Although there are some minor questions about the back line this looks to be the best Dutch side since Ruud Gullit's dreadlocks were on the scene in 1988.

Now, knowing my luck, they'll crash out in the Round of 16. At which point, I'll change my pick to Spain and claim to have known all along that the Spaniards would win.

My apologies if someone else has already done a WC prediction thread... I looked but didn't see one.

I'm going to take the Netherlands to win it all....those guys can really move off the ball and they have 2 or 3 of the top 5 ball strikers on their team in the entire world cup in Robben, Van Persie, and Sneijder(spelling?).

I didn't even read all of your post before I picked, so I swear I'm not copying you.

My pick would have been Germany prior to the untimely injury to Ballack b/c they are my favorite team outside of the US. If its not Germany, the US, or England I really don't give a ****. I hate the ***** Latin American/South American/Spain/Portugal/Italian teams that are full of a bunch of diving, bitching whiners.

With van Robben (netherlands) hurt and Nani (Portugal) out those teams will have some trouble. Italy is old, Portugal's Ronaldo is a *****, Argentina is all Messi, Brazil is a superb team without a dominant star.

This may be the most open World Cup in a long time. If the US can get its back line together, score a few a goals, control the midfield, draw against England, they can win the group and make the final 8. Spain is probably the safe bet if I had to make one, but alas I have no pick, I am just looking forward to the games.

Because I want to see what kind of a celebration that they would throw over there.

Of course, they'll probably go into a tailspin after we beat them on Sat.

I wasn't aware the superbowl was coming up so soon already.

Oh, you must mean March madness... Wait, it's June.

Bowl season? No, that's not summer...

I guess you're talking about the NBA or NHL finals... but those are already going on, silly!

The Super Bowl may be king in America, but worldwide the World Cup dwarfs it. The Super Bowl had about 106 million viewers in the US this year, the largest ever I believe. While Fifa claims that the final game of the last World Cup (in Germany, 2006) had around 750 million viewers. That was down from previous finals. Fifa's figure is likely inflated, perhaps by a large measure, but the World Cup undoubtedly draws more television viewers, more fans, more attention, etc. Cumulatively, perhaps the Olympics can compete with the World Cup.

I don't follow enough international football outside of the US team to make a pick. Spain and Brazil are the obvious ones, as has been pointed out. I like the Netherlands too. Aside from rooting for the US, I'll probably pick a team to pull for as I'm watching the game. Except for England. I've watched enough EPL to hate most of those guys. Being an Arsenal fan, it's a tough ask to get me to suddenly pull for Rooney, Terry, Gerrard, and the rest.

Get World Cup fever this summer; it's much more fun than hating soccer. And I'm like HoRo- Outside of the US, I'll make a decision on who to pull for on a game by game basis.

The only thing that can stop Spain is Spain.

Argentina is also much more than just Messi. Although the world cup is pretty wide open, I expect a lot of the usual suspects to be around late. I am going England, Brazil, Argentina and Spain in the Semis.

Germany will be a tough out, however, if Germany wins their group and the US comes in 2nd to England, US and Germany matchup in the round of 16, and I really like that matchup for the US.

I am not as crazy about the Orange as many of you. Especially if Robben isnt fit. AND they will likely run into Brazil in the Quarters.

I think the Azzurri are going to have a rough go of it this year.

but with the injury to Robin, I think England could do it.

Based on unis, Croatia would be the runaway favorites if they had qualified. As it stands, the Netherlands orange and baby blue combo is the best. England'sall white kit is just plain boring

I want to say Netherlands, but running into Brazil, which will probably happen could knock them out. Of course, to be the best, you have to beat the best at some point.

On talent alone, Spain should win, but they are Spain and will more than likely choke. Besides the US, I will be cheering for Italy, but they are old.

I really think the US could make a deep run this year, but not sure we have what it takes to win it all. Like I said, wide open.

Those other countries are just window dressing. We are the world. All Hail Xenophobia!

ETA: I still contend that if soccer were more than the 4th most popular sport in the US, we would dominate the World Cup.

Yes, I know youth soccer is bigger than most youth sports, but we all know it's no better than the 4th most popular sport in the country. By the time kids get to high school, most of our best athletes choose football, baseball, or basketball. If we treated soccer like the rest of the world treats soccer, we'd dominate. As a country, we choose not to dominate essentially.

I'm going with Brazil - boring, I know. Spain is too obvious and with any other coach, I'd pick Argentina.

My sleeper to make some significant noise in the tourney (without actually winning it) is Mexico. Hate to say it, but have a gut feeling they are going to have a good month down there.

Over There, Over There
Send the word, send the word,
Over There
That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum tumming everywhere
So prepare,
Say a Prayer
Send the word,
Send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over.
And we won't be back till it's over over there!

but 260 million still ain't bad. Plus, if you look for a cumulative number over the entirety of the Cup, the number would be RIDICULOUS.

It's also very interesting that viewership has actually declined over the last 3 World Cups, even by FIFA'sestimates, despite increases in world population and advances in technology (more tv's in more places).</p>

no reason to really think we would. We can dominate other sports because the rest of the world's obsessed with soccer. **** we don't dominate basketball.

Olympic medal totals for men's basketball: USA has 13 gold, and 16 total. The next closest country in terms of golds in the USSR at 2. Yeah, no domination at all.
