Everyone knows that in a team sport you play for your teammates more than your coach. Putting aside the way Berhalter handled this, if it is true that the team was uniformly upset with the way Gio was training and behaving in general, and he got in a fight with Tyler Adams about it, there really is no defending him.
If true, and it seems like it is, hard to put aside what Berhalter did.
You have no idea what is going to happen after the first half of game one at the WC, let alone 2 games in. Might be a bunch of yellow/red cards, pre-game illnesses, injuries.
A coach knows his players, and there is no way in hell Berhalter didn't know telling Reyna he would be barely used wasn't going to affect his attitude. Berhalter put a black cloud over Reyna for no reason at all. Even if you don't plan on using the kid, why the hell tell him that? Things might change once the competition begins, and you damn sure might need him. Telling him you are not going to use him kinda helps him check out from the competition, and why would a coach take a risk of any of his players checking out?
Unforgivable if you ask me. You are a 20 year old kid who plays in the friggin Bundesliga and your coach just told you he wasn't going to use you in the biggest tournament in the world. Not to mention you might actually be the most talented kid on the team.
I will be shocked if Berhalter is coach for WC 2026.
