That's part of the psychology of it. Given how it's set-up, you should score. It's a whole lot of space to cover for just one guy. If you hit to a top corner accurately, the goalie has no chance of stopping it. It's basically impossible. But because of that, guys are tempted to try to be perfect, and in the process, lessen their margin for error. And suddenly you see shots getting sprayed over and around the goal.

Seems like the best spot to kick it a lot of times is straight down the middle.

I sort of agree. But if you do that and the goalie doesn't move, it's going to be a bad look, like you kicked the ball right into his hands.
