They obviously asked one of their journalists to write a controversial article to ride the current news cycle but... Soccer is a young mans sport. Messi at 39 was still the best player in this tournament. He has been unapproachable as an all-around players for nearly 20 years. He is like Lebron but with Jordan winning %. Soccer is a sport dominated by position but he is that rare player who can score, advanced the ball, and pass. And the most interesting thing about him, he doesn't work particularly hard, he doesn't do crazy health regiments, or have advanced technology. Not just best soccer player - ESPN just called him the greatest athlete of all tiime, in ANY sport.
Hmmm... Didn't exactly feel like Jordan's 63 against Bird, Ali's knockout of Foreman, Phelps winning 8 golds in 8 races or Gretzky scoring 50 goals in 39 games. But what do I know.... ESPN has a narrative.
That being said. Wilt or Randy Moss are probably the greatest athletes because they could do anything, they were huge...could run, kick, throw, jump, catch. Greatest athletes has to be able to play every sport. Another one would be Allen Iverson. Hall of fame basketball player, all-state football player, could have played corner in the NFL, and ran a sub 5 minute mile.
