Would Hurley or Drew have gotten the same reception?

You’ve decided to be negative because we hired someone else other than the one you wanted. You decided to be negative and he just signed his contract today with no players yet. Idk, sounds more like you’re trying to push an agenda.

If you watched the press conference today and aren’t excited, there’s nothing more I can say besides, wow.
Agenda? I don’t have an agenda. I’m a Kentucky fan. I just want to win. Just like you. I didn’t decide to be negative. I just feel that way. For the record there were about 10 guys I wanted more than pope, but as a person I love pope the best

I loved the press conference. I loved everything about it. I was texting my friend who was there and he was giving me all the behind the scenes updates.

I am choosing to be cautious because if we find ourselves in the middle of winter struggling to keep up in conference play then it is what it is
and sheer excitement and big blue passion won’t help us.

I’m sure if one of them had accepted the job, they would have gotten a pretty good reception but I’m not sure it would have been as good as today.
I think the difference today was what weall talked about before. What you saw today was the BBN feeling like they got OUR program back!

That’s why it was different. It was a collective letting go of that long building frustration of feeling like it had been taken away in some way.

It wasn’t even all about Mark, but Mark was the perfect personality to feed that feeling today and it was a good day.!

This is how BBN felt today. Great post.

Barnhart said he was reminded of the Jefferson Starship song Find Your Way Back. Best thing I've heard him say in a while.

I would say if the administration handled it right, there would have been a large crowd, but I don't think either of those coaches would have gotten the crowd going like Pope did. He said all the right things, brought in all those former players to make a point. Hell he made fun of himself, but let it be known he came to restore Kentucky basketball.

Loved the self deprecating sense of humor. Refreshing.

You are smoking crack if you think Hurley wouldn't have got a similar amount of fans. I know we are excited about Pope now but let's not get carried away thinking a back to back champ coming to UK wouldn't have also been awesome.

I think they would have given either the same type of reception
but they wouldn't have been able to wow the crowd the way Pope
did.
I can't see how anybody that watched that would think
Pope wouldn't be a great recruiter at Kentucky.

Hurley was a nobody before 2023 in college basketball. Still kind of a nobody until he proves that he’s not a flash in the pan and can win consistently. He only had 2 NCAA tournament wins prior. Ollie also won a championship at UConn his second year and was subsequently run out of town a few years later. They found reasons to get rid of him.
to win back to back NCAA titles out of the Big East and be called a nobody shows how little you know. The guy can flat out coach. Supposedly, we offered to make him the highest paid coach in history, any college sport. So don't let your blue goggles blind you. I'm confident we got the right coach, but to act stupid and say Hurley is a nobody is embarrassing.

For some reason that I can’t explain, it felt as if the fanbase needed to show up for Pope. Maybe as a reaction to some of the public negativity about the hire?
I am certain that Hurley, Donovan, Oats or anyone else could not have done a better job that Mark Pope did today. He is sincere and honest and it shows

I get what you're saying, it's a good feeling having the guy come back from the 96 team and everyone rally behind him. I just am positive that had Hurley accepted that monster offer the fan base would have also been juiced,

I’m glad it worked out this way. Hurley seems like the biggest ******* in coaching.

I don't think anyone could get the same support like Pope did. Hurley would have been close but it is different when a beloved Cat who has won a title takes over. This is a true testament to just how much BBN loves this team. We aren't the worst fans in sports no matter how many people want to tell you we are. Having passion and a desire to win doesn't make you a bad fan but one who cares enough to see their team be at its best. There is a standard to uphold here and Pope clearly knows it.

Exactly. The guys a jerk! Don't fit UK imho. Maybe a great coach for now but character wise he can't carry Popes lunch pail as old timers would say.

I had a lot going on yesterday, but I still really thought about going. I wouldn't have thought about going at all for the other candidates. Hurley just feels like another northeasterner that wouldn't fully understand the culture here and would be looking for a different job like Pitino did. I just couldn't see him as a long term solution.

Drew is the opposite of Hurley and might have stayed a lot longer, but he wouldn't draw the excitement of the fans. It would feel like another Tubby hire. Pope might have been the only option that could have brought this much excitement and hope to us. Doesn't guarantee success, but it guarantees we have a coach that wants to succeed here more than any other.

I don't believe that either of them would have drawn a crowd anything close to what we saw yesterday!
