Would I be over reaching to say Chinese are taking this to a new level?…

And this is pretty funny:

"The 19-year-old, who renounced her U.S. citizenship to compete for China, fell and crashed into a wall during the women’s short program team event on Sunday. Zhu then missed a jump in her routine and finished with the lowest score of the event, knocking China down from third to to fifth place."

Maybe the Olympic Committee (and more specifically, the civilized world) should stop awarding the Olympics to countries ruled by totalitarian governments (China), countries with poor human rights records (China) and borderline 3rd World countries.
Agree 100%.

Just curious. If she did in fact renounce her citizenship, will she have to apply for a Visa to come back into the country to stay? She would then be a chinese national , right? Seems like an awfully big price to pay.

Just speculating here, I wonder if given the attitude many liberal Americans in her age group have that, America is a horrible racist country full of intolerant right wing hillbillies, and the wonderful tolerant people from everywhere else (China in this case) is so understanding, tolerant etc
I hope she doesn’t end up in a bad situation over there. The incidents I read about a few years back where the young American women who renounced their US Citizenship and moved to Afghanistan or wherever that was to become isis brides comes to mind.

I think there's an ethnic component at play here that most of us couldn't appreciate.
There's also a massive corruption component to vying for, getting, and constructing the Olympics which make them a good match for certain regimes.

edit: Sorry, King, I saw your comment but didn't notice to which comment you were replying.

Lmaoooooooooooo like we don't have food supply shortages right NOW in capitalist America
Supply shortages here have nothing to do with capitalism and everything to do with regulation. When govt gets out of the way, capitalism works.

At least 80% of Chinese live in poverty. And vast swaths of the country are essentially third-world country.

Beijing has gotten 2 Olympics in the past 10 years. It's crazy. It's always China, Korea, Japan.

It's probably a bit of making up for lost time with some representation from Asia. Asia has hosted 4 out of 24 Winter Olympics and 4 out of 29 Summer Olympics. However, it was only recently that Asia was really considered (3 of those Summer games after 1988, and 3 of the Winter games after 1998). For comparison's sake, the USA has hosted 4 Winter and 4 Summer games itself - and is slated to host the 2028 Summer Games in LA.

But don't worry - there isn't an Asian country hosting another one for another decade.

Except when it doesn't - which is why we have most of the regulations we have today. Unfettered capitalism leads to the same place as unfettered socialism - it's why neither works alone.
No, our civil legal system is the ultimate check and balance, although there are some economies of scale that regulation handles more swiftly such as food inspections and construction consistency. But, ultimate control always leads to abuse. Look no further than the way blue states handled Covid even after the data and “science” became widely known. Relinquishing overlord style power proves difficult for them.

Unfettered capitalism can lead to a form of corporate fascism by corporations that have monopoly power and enough lobbyists. So yes, the same end.

Ethnic or not, it supports communism
I have a true story I might interject, depending on the direction of this thread. It speaks to the sometimes pervasive effects of ethnic tribalism. I detest communism as much as anyone, but I think that most of the effects in favor of communism by ethnic Chinese that make some of the decisions these athletes are making are incidental. It's about personal ethnic identity winning out over national identity.
