Would NU have been better off facing Southern Utah (3 wins last year)

I'd rather face tougher competion to keep them on their toes and not get over confident. What impressed me the most yesterday were the second half defensive adjustments! They only got that second score because we laid off and gave them anything they wanted underneath. The onside kick was the only unforeseen problem. We are much more prepared after last night now for Oregon!

We'll see how we stack up next week but I'm hopeful that ArkSt was just a much better offensive team than the fans expected. The onside kick was just one of those deals that is tough to control. They got a very fortunate bounce.

last night or the a conference and bowl winner with a returning QB like AkSt? From a confidence stand point maybe USU but from a learning standpoint, we saw a lot last night and a bunch of guys had to play. IMO, nobody gave AkSt enough respect.
It's hard to say, I'd like to see how they play Miami next week. I think they are a decent team, and I hate gauging anything from the first week. Especially a new defensive scheme.

I do think Nebraska will be, and needs to be, improved against Oregon. Whether it shows on the stats is another issue. The game was a much better team to play than say Southern Utah, but it should have been nailed shut in the 3rd.

We had some penalties late in the game that prevented us from locking it down IMO. A couple of holds, a phantom hand to the face on one of our rushers, etc. I think we caused some of our own problems but there were several questionable calls at inopportune times that really hurt us. The good news is that we still found a way to win. Lamar Jackson had a huge pass break up and near interception on the next to the last play and we defended the last play very well.

Oregon didn't learn anything about them selves last night compared to what Nebraska did...

Hell they broke a over 100 year record by scoring 77 on a average FCS school. Not like playing the Sun Belt conference champs on opening night.

Watched the game last night and reached the 2nd quarter this morning. You would never guess during the 2nd qt the game would come down to the last play. You guys were starting to pull away it seemed. I think their tempo is what kept them in the game and that may or may not be a good thing for you guys going into Oregon. FWIW. The announcer said arky state had 5 new o.linemen. I wouldn't have guessed that.

They got rid of the ball quickly enough that all their O line had to do was basically get in our way for a count. We would have been better off IMO bringing the heat every single play.

Why? We couldn't cover and tackle with 8, why would we be able to cover and tackle with 7 or 6? Our issue wasn't that he had too much time. A pass rush wasn't going to hurry him up on. Most of their plays, the ball was gone before a rush could get there. In my opinion.

Well no, since we pulled out the win, i would much rather have the experience agains Arky st than the Ducks' opponent, true. On the other hand, the fact that we barely won against our "warm up" opponent, even though they were a better warm up than Oregon's, is not encouraging.

Their game plan wrt their Oline was a bit like making a silk purse out of a sows ear. Returning QB who has a quick ball, some big wideouts, but your Oline is super green. Their best game approach matched our greatest liability (green starting DBs and a inexperience at one of the OLBs.

Later in the game we did bring a backer at times and it forced him to move his feet. When he had to do that his accuracy suffered. IF we had put 6 on the line and dropped 2 at the snap IMO we would have maybe caused him some trouble. I dunno but I hate watching a guy pick us apart when he has all day with a 3 man rush.

I agree, it was more about mixing up coverages more, imo. They ran 3 step drops, and played the Texas tech pattern of dink and dunk like it's a run game. The more pressure you send, the more room they have after the catch. That said, I'll be interested to see what Arkansas State plays like from here.

I always think it's better to gauge yourself right out of the box. Lot to work on this week, maybe some things can get a bit more ironed out. Not saying the defense will be lights out, but hopefully we will see a stingier defense and a more consistent offense against the Ducks, especially in the 4th quarter.

When Diaco was hired we all knew he was a bend but don't break guy. All the players said afterwards they were worried about the vertical threat and decided to put up the umbrella and force them to nickle and dime every time. In theory this matches well with what Diaco is known for. Honestly it was inexperience at the corners, linebackers that didn't make it work at times.

Defense at times looked really good, particularly red zone defense, which again, is a strength in Diaco's system. It was a good teaching moment to be able to put this on tape. And it's great tape to have to coach on with Oregon coming up. Now we should be able to see what Deonte and Diaco are worth.

We played a lot of 3-4 when they slpit the field very wide with 4 receivers... not the optimal matchup. Hopefully our dime and nickle packages are ready next week.
