Would Quay have started for Ole Miss?

They obviously didn't have a problem starting younger guys. Gross was good but extremely small.

I ask because 1. We sold him playing time with Fletcher leaving. 2. Ole Miss's DL was pretty stout this year. 3. I just saw him by McCool.

Not all Quay's problems were football related. He and Nick hopefully are growing up and maturing...getting ready for a bowl then Spring practice

Probably. his competition was Gross. If he got similar reps he would have been equal or superior.

Wait, Gross had more tkls, sacks, and TFL than Boyd, yet MSU kept a superior..

Player like Evans on the bench? That doesn't make much sense.

If Evans was better than Gross, you would think he would have been playing ahead of Cherrington or even Boyd, since based on pure production Gross had a much better year than Boyd.

Yes. This is a large part of what has many of us so pissed off at Chris Wilson... Improper use of talented personnel. Boyd drew constant double teams because whoever we lined up beside him was never a threat, save the plays that Quay or Nick were in. When Cherrington was in, teams could almost completely neutralize Boyd and Autry because they weren't worried about the other two "space eaters" getting any push/pressure. Quay's talent level was crazy obvious every single time he took the field for us... but there is more to the story as to why he wasn't getting as much PT.

This is why getting Za'Darius Smith/Chris Jones to campus is such a huge deal for us... we HAVE to get an outside pass rush coming from the other end to free up Autry/PJ/Quay/James etc. Just one weak spot on the line is crazy obvious when you don't do any lb blitzing like we don't...

I think most people think Quay was our best d lineman, but for some reason he didn't play. Thus... This conversation.

Make no mistake, Gross is/will be one hell of a player. Yeah, he's a bit undersized for a DT. But his first step is crazy explosive. Very reminiscent of Peria Jerry in that regard.

yes- Cherry getting to play over Quay and the other guys is one of this season's mysterys...it wasn't based on game performance...and something many of us want answered when this season is over

OP & C34 are both RIGHT. First lets put ourself in Wilson's shoes for a second. While all the fans are bitching about "why the 17 is Cherry in there over Quay/James/PJ/Virges?" he still has a boss that has to maintain control over the team with "off the field" issues. It's a tough spot to be in, I know from personal experience about having a "game changer" be benched by the HC when if he was in would make the entire team better. But from Mullen's perspective the old cliche line pops up....."at what cost?" I know last yr if my HC had played that kid....what would we be teaching him or the other kids on the roster? Just because the outside world doesn't know what he did doesn't mean the team doesn't know. And knowing that he did & playing him could ultimately cost the coach not only the season.....but his entire football team. And watching it splinter from that HC spot will be with you for a LONG time. Seen this play out from both angles. I've seen a kid who did something stupid be able to play despite what he did and watch as the team fell apart & the HC be under tremendous fire from the outside. I've seen it go the OTHER way (like in Mullen's case) where the kid didn't play and STILL be under fire.
And UM fans, don't laugh at thus ****.....it could happen to ANY coach! And happens more times than you think.

But I think for UM's defense Quay wouldn't start over Gross NOT because he's not as talented. Both are very damned good DTs. The difference is Gross fits Wommack's scheme better than Quay. Quay is a 1 technique DT (lined up between the shoulders of C & G). Gross uses his speed more as a 2-3 technique. Gross has power but actually uses his hands & feet better as Quay uses his leverage & power better. Both are extremely good players and paired together would be insanely difficult to stop. But we won't be able to see that happen.
