Thankfully our rival isn't the most prestigious college football program in the history of the sport (arguably) and they will never be able to hire the best (arguably) coach in the country.

We lose to Ole Miss this year and Freezus will be in every one of our recruits' ears spreading the gospel of how they are the team on the rise and the grove is awesome and all that other crap they constantly spew. We beat them and Mullen can walk around the state saying, "Different coach. Same story. Go ahead and sign with Ole Miss if you don't mind losing to us every year, because we don't lose to that team."

Ole Miss is not a sleeping giant we should be afraid to wake, they are a the dying embers of fire that we need to snuff out for good. We beat them 5-6-7 years in a row and they become the Vanderbilt of the West (I'm not sure that would disappoint many of them). That makes our lot that much better.

I'm not so sure we want the same thing. You just sold out on our best season over for a Sunday morning **** talking session. We have vastly different aspirations for MSU. I want conference and national competitiveness. You want a win over the in-state rival at the expense of the the former. That's what the choice proposed by the OP is all about...

Some of you folks are way over-thinking things. The choice is the best regular season ever or solid season with a W over Ole Miss. We've had several instances of the latter and will have several more. There is nothing rational about choosing not to have the winningest season in school history. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

The "I think we should lose, so we can win", or better yet, "I think we should give up our best season ever, so we can win" assertion is irrational and I still hold that anyone that supports it is a 17ing moron.

First of all, it's a hypothetical question. OF COURSE, we want to win every game. But losing to Ole Miss hampers our program more than losing to LSU & Alabama does. That's not arguable at all. We rarely beat those schools for top prospects, if at all. We are CONSTANTLY in battles with Ole Miss for players. Reducing them to a joke in the West only helps our chances against the big boys. If you can't see that you're the moron.

10-2 (with one loss being OM) means a win over LSU or Alabama. If it is Alabama, I say yes. Give me the 10-2. If not Bama, I rather beat OM and lose 3 others. However, if the question is between 10-2 or 8-4....sure take 10-2 all day long.

I want to get to 10 in a row.

My hesitation to saying 10-2 is this:

If we're 10-1, we're staring at a BCS game. We're possibly in the mix for an SEC Championship, depending on what happened in the Bama-LSU game. These days, if you're in the mix for the SEC Championship, you're in the mix for the national title. If we were in that position and ****** it all up by losing to a ****** team, I don't think I would EVER get over it until/unless we later accomplished all of that.

So, the fact that it's Ole Miss is pretty irrelevant to me, other than the fact that they aren't good. I'd feel the same way if it was Vandy or Kentucky.

Having said all that, I'd 100% take that scenario over 8-4 for sure and probably 9-3 too because winning in Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge this year would be truly special.

Well there boyo, I want MSU to win every game we play. Now are you saying you don't want that? What I'm saying is that winning over the in state rival is pretty much a precondition for getting what we both want. You brought up the rivalry since the 60s. We hadn't beaten them 3 times in a row since the 40s. They owned us big time when they were winning titles. Neither team has dominated the other since and neither has sustained sucess overall. We have a golden opportunity to beat the FIVE in a row if we beat them this year. Neither team has done that since their glory years back in the 60s. Let's do that first and I think the rest will come along with it sooner or later.

If you don't say 10-2, you're proving NAFOOM right about our fanbase. While I want to beat Ole Miss every single year, I wouldn't trade a 10-2 season for an 8-4 one just to have it. If we go 10-2 this year, and one of them is Ole Miss, that means we either beat Alabama or LSU, and that's a much bigger deal than beating Ole Miss anyway.

Even though you're mainly choosing 10-2... that was the best explanation I've heard for anyone choosing 9-3 over 10-2. The realization of what was lost is a lot harsher than what would be gained in a way.

Personally I'd rather beat Bama BUT......

I'd rather lose to them than UM. That explains my feelings in this thread nicely I think.

i agree. its a tough call when you weigh overall record vs win against mississippi. i say overall record, based on principle. 10-2

I can see the positives and negatives to both. It's an interesting question... But more interesting are the two camps and their general responses in this thread...

The 9-3 Camp: "It would be nice to win 10, but I love beating Ole Miss and more importantly, I think 9-3 with a win over Ole Miss sets us up better for recruiting in the coming years, therefore setting us up for more sustained future success."

The 10-2 Camp. "I want to win 10 because more wins is better than less wins. I'd also like to add that anyone who feels differently, or even feels the need to discuss the trade-offs involved, is a 17in irrational nazi turbo-douche that obviously hates freedom and all things MSU."

I think that pretty much sums it up.

Reverse it. Who here thinks OM wouldnt give up the Cotton Bowl and bump down to the chick fil a or the music city in trade for having beaten us in 2009,IF THE QUESTION was asked at the beginning of the 2009?

Who thinks they wouldnt want that at the beginning of the 2010 season?

Would have changed some fortunes in my opinion had they won that game. It has nothing to do with achieving some intermediate goal of playing for an 11 win season. You win the big hardware or you dont. THat is it. Next beneath the NC and the SEC championship is the egg bowl. Bottom line. I'd say if we arent in line to win the NC or the SEC, then making damn sure we beat those bastards is right up there.

Success is defined by wins and losses and there are 'fans' who would rather be less successful as long as the 'poorer' results remained greater than those of Ole Miss and included a win over them?

Personally, I'd rather see my team have as great a level of success as possible regardless of against whom the W's are compiled.

Whats even crazier is the fact that some of these 'fans' cite as their main reason the fact that they'd rather go 9-3/8-4 (as opposed to 10-2) than have to listen to OM fans talk trash.

REALLY?!?!? WHAT THE 17 IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Some of them have bought too far in to the whole "Our State" thing and fear losing it even though "Our Nation" is within reach.

Mullen is still in the building state.......Wins over uofm, continuing the win streak, helps that building.

We need to know what TSUN's record is here. Say TSUN is 10-1 going into that game you guys still rather have a 10-2 record and lose to them and they end up 11-1 and we are at 10-2? I don't think so.
