Play was irrelevant. No possible chance they could have gotten a Hail Mary off in the remaining time.

Class leadership by our coach if he is taking the heat for CL but CL makes 1-2 critical mental mistakes every game. On a high note he did seem to have more zip on his balls, maybe his issue is mechanics and not a strength.
The issue isn't that he can't dial up a fastball, its his arm strength on routine throws.... Some guys and throw darts effortlessly, other need to load up. I think that is usually evidenced on the first read, if he needs to change targets and reset he seems to lose strength.... You could see that on some of the passes into the flats that took forever to get out there.

It was all Rettig's fault with all those signals he was giving all game, he should
have signaled it was fourth down.

Well there it is, one of the top stories/videos on ESPN mobile. The video is titled "Rutgers spikes ball, loses game". I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Yeah, because a Hail Mary pass has never ever worked.

It's great to see so many people who having a losing attitude.

We get it, but reality was taking a sack was not smart either. You would have thought he could have been yelling hail mary play while getting everybody set up.

I don't have a losing attitude. We didn't lose because of that play. We lost because we were 3/12 on third down and they were 11/17. His receivers made some ridiculous plays on third and long.

nobody liked that spike, but tomorrow you will see the real reason we lost, and feel proud that we had them on the ropes, and they had to beat us, we didn't beat ourselves.

Honestly, the game was over 3 seconds left, wrs weren't anywere aligned for a td play.

This is all on the timeout management of the staff, I've been hard on Laviano ... but there was nothing he could do there.

Wow, you guys are brutal. I've wanted to see Rettig all year, but apart from the bad mistakes at the end (taking the sack and the spike - and much of that is on the staff for not consering TOs), Laviano played a really good game. He made a bunch of very nice throws (especially the 3 TDs to Carroo), used his legs a couple of times to good effect and made good decisions, in general. We almost just upset the #4 team in the country and y'all are being way over the top negative for some reason I can't quite fathom.

Wow. Ye of little faith. What if the Hail Mary was successful? That game would have been bigger than the Louisville game. We just wanted the chance. That's all. Feels unfinished.

Laviano played a great game until the last tWo plays. Taking a sack on 3rd was the end of the game. throw the damn ball OB. The spike was shear idiocy. How can the qb not have any awereness of what down it was.

Agree, Numbers ! Absolutely, surprised , MSU needed every last minute to beat us... He's still got things to improve on but I thought he showed a lot more last night than he did all season. If he continues that trajectory I don't have issue with him.

Not the smartest play I ever saw, but I'm just not going to get worked up over it. We played better than almost everyone expected and hung in with one of the big boys. Laviano didn't throw any INTs and managed the game pretty well - just not going to get all up and arms over a play that in all likelihood was not going to work.

4th down spike was irrelevant in terms of game outcome. As was mentioned game was over with the sack, and realistically with the 3rd and 9 completion by MSU deep in their own territory...and yes may look foolish on ESPN worst 10, but also will remind nation that Rutgers took MSU to the wire!...MUCH more positive to get out of last night..now focus on Indiana, which if we play like last night should be a 2 touchdown win

Not On CL, we were out of it wth the slimmest of slim chances. Everyone performed well, proved to alot of outsiders we belong in the big ten

He finally threw a pass longer than 10 yards. That was something many of us have been waiting for. I still think Laviano himself doesn't trust his arm. He had size mismatches throughout the game that he could have hit. Overall, a strong game by him until the final plays. Taking that sack was far worse than the spike imo.

I'm really surprised by all the acceptance of a another moral victory here. All these, "we played better than the expectations." posts are a loser's attitude. How anyone can be happy with last night is beyond me. We had chances to put this game away and didn't. Also why is no one questioning the spike on first down of the last drive? If Laviano has such a good understanding of the playbook and offense (which has been the justification people have been using for him starting over Rettig) Then why does he need to spike the ball and get a call from the coordinator. He killed all momentum after converting a huge third and long because he's not confident in his own ability to run an effective 2 minute drill.

1) "Another" moral victory? When was our last one? Maybe the 2013 Pinstripe vs. ND? That was a while ago.

2) Were you completely 100% happy with our lackluster win against Kansas? I am betting you were not -- but why not? My point is that if there are wins that you shouldn't feel completely good about, and there are, then there are losses that you shouldn't feel completely bad about. Can't have it both ways.

3) We never had one chance (much less chances, plural) to "put this game away". Even if we had scored a TD on the final drive instead of the FG, the game was hardly put away.

4) The reason why no one is questioning the first down spike is that it is the proper play. Even in the NFL, it takes about seven seconds longer to get everyone set, call a play at the line, and run it, than it does to line everyone up quickly and spike it. In that situation the time is worth more than the down.

5) A two minute drill is one thing, a less than one minute drill is something else again.

No it wouldn't have. At the time we could have made it to a BCS game and won the big east. A win here is a moral victory but probably largely irrelevant in the long run.

There were certainly positives, but the reason we lost is the same reason we have 2 other losses- the staff is just over their head and makes dumb mistakes.

I can't remember but I've seen it. I feel like I've even seen it twice ever. These kind of things happen in the heat the moment sometimes. It's still embarrassing though.

Doug Williams did it for the Tampa Bay Bucs.

He went on to get a Super Bowl ring with Washington.

Part of coaching is outsmarting your opponent. I watched the last play again and every single Michigan State player expected us to run a play. We had them totally fooled.
