Send this to Politi, apparently he forgot about any of this before his premature, and grandiose "can FLood" article.

Nice article. Unfortunately, as we can tell from the lack of response here, nobody seems interested in what kind of person he is. Everyone, perhaps even the university, wants their pound of flesh.

4 hours since posted and 4 comments. 1000 on the other articles. This is a great piece that everyone should be forwarding and getting behind.

it looks like Flood is in the process of being treated like Jimmy Valvano was treated at NC State - a fundamentally decent man who gets an avalanche unjustifiably unleashed upon him.

Flood with get through this OK.

Great perspective and a commendable job by 247 Sports.

I wonder if it's uncommon for a national site to go full throttle in defending someone that they believe in.

Great article. I find it assinine that people think flood is at fault for what some players did on their free time

OP should change title to "247 Sports Supports Flood."

It's too bland to compete with the other titles.

People probably think it's off topic.

It's a little rough, but it presents a number of great points.

Flood really is a good guy. And while I wasn't 100% behind him in the beginning, he won me over and for the last year and a half I've really wanted to see him succeed. I think he's the kind of guy we can be proud of, he's the kind of guy that players - an parents - really respond to.

I'd love to see him stay. My concern is that there are clearly political elements within the University who are trying to execute other plans.

I fully support Coach Flood and his coaching staff and the team.

As someone implied in another thread, there are a few bad apples on this team
Hopefully after this incident, most of them will be gone, and hopefully and others (2 were implied) will depart as well.

The VAST majority of these kids are great character people, and we are all proud to have them represent our school.

Look at the recruits we have coming in. By all accounts, these are high quality/character individuals.

Sure, this looks and is bad, and it pains Rutgers fans to see it occur.

But there are so many hypotheticals being thrown around assuming who knew what that it has quickly turned into a self flaggelating feeding frenzy.
And people are using this as an excuse to call for Flood to be replaced. Talk about turning on your own.

Is there a fan base out there that does this to themselves?

Let the process and legal investigations play out, but support our guys in the meantime.

The article is nice. However, strategically, it's a silly way to garner support for Flood. And I do support Flood and don't think he should be fired. But the article essentially says, "Flood supports Special Olympics so he is the man to lead an organization of 120+ people." It reads like a HS paper article, rather than a piece of solid journalism or an opinion piece.

Flood's issues are 2 fold.

First, as 4Real points out, people much higher up the food chain want him out. To argue that, at this point, is ignoring the reality and belies a fundamental inability to connect the dots.

Second, and this is central to any crisis moment, in any industry, what did he know and when did he know it? If this 2nd investigation determines that HCKF knew these kids were the target of an investigation, and he let them stay affiliated with the team, he is a goner. And I'll admit that it is all off the record speculation and comments, but I've heard that from multiple people with multiple affiliations with the university. He won't survive that, imo.

Nice article. I think most believe that KF is a good man even if they question whether he is the right guy to lead our program. Some of what he is given credit for in the article he created while other aspects he inherited and maintained. The details of these events matter in my assessment of what culpability KF may have and hopefully at some point we will know what transpired.

Kyle Flood is a good man. He's becoming a great coach.

The only reason the actions of those arrested yesterday causes him to be fired is because the current administration won't let Julie do her job. If that happensRutgers will never win a championship again.

Hudson, you have seen you write this before. When you say that if Flood knew of an investigation they should be gone. Isn't that a bit much? One, what if the police told him certain kids not to be named were under investigation? What if they even named the kids? There are lots of investigations that occur that come to nothing. Should he remove the kids simply because of an investigation?

I'll expand on my thought.

For 2 of the 5 of them? Peele and barnwell? Yes. The moment he finds out they are suspects in anything from spitting on the sidewalk to collaborating with ISIS, they are suspended for violating team rules. I don't hang them out to dry, but they cannot practice with the team and other than academic support--ohhhhh the irony--and medical treatment, they have no contact with my team.

Second, if Flood didn't report it up his chain of command, his goose is cooked.

You don't need me to tell you that we have a major PR **** show in place here, historically. If he knew, and didn't tell Julie, that simply will not fly from a PR standpoint. I expect my CEO to understand things like that.

So, when? They fire him today before the first game tomorrow? Next week? We go the whole year with an Interim coach?

Flood, if and when he is, should be fired for wins and losses, not this crap.

1. The first charge, if found true, is at most a one game suspension.

2. He is not responsible for 5 kids committing crimes. If he knew something was up, but there were no charges, whats he supposed to do, suspend kids, what if they were not charged or found innocent? There is a process here. If every coach in America were fired for having players arrested, there would be no coaches left.

3. The RU administration flat out sucks. If it were not for sports, this alumnus would have no interest in supporting this university. Sad to have to say this. But after the last few years, this is how I feel. I will always support Rutgers Athletics.

1. I don't think he should face any suspension for the email issue. I think he should publicly admit that he violated the policy and announce a "renewed commitment to the academic protocols the university has in place."

2. I never said he was. However, he is 100% responsible for the RU football brand. How's that brand look this morning? A football team is a dictatorship, not a court room. "Peele and Barnwell are currently suspended for violation of team rules. I have no firther comment on the matter." The others, considering no previous run-ins with the law, could have continued to practice pending the investigation.

When every other program in America has 5 players arrested at the same time, immediately after practice ends, for charges such as these, get back to us. Otherwise, that is a silly strawman argument.

3. yes, it does suck.

It would have been a better article if it had openly attacked or contradicted the NJ.Com stories and their extreme inaccuracies. I would have liked to see it take open shots at Politi, Duggan and Sargent otherwise very well done and much appreciated

"The moment he finds out they are suspects" would that it were so cut & dried -

define 'finds out' - a direct confession from the player himself? a passing speculative unsubstantiated conversation with one of the members of the maintenance staff? - certainly if the New Brunswick PD stopped in & briefed Flood that might be an issue - but you would wonder what on earth is going on if they did not also communicate with Rutgers security & admin. So 'finds out" can be blurry

Define "suspects" - even if Flood was aware that one or more players had been contacted by the police for questioning it can often be just that - 'questioning' and the police often are not in a hurry to show their cards & declare someone a 'suspect' - it is especially murky if the PD even said directly to Flood "we just want to ask them if they saw anything on the night in question ... we will let you know if there is anything else that we need"

Certainly if Flood had some bonafide insight - some real unsettling information that some of his players were definitely involved in criminal acts - and he took no action - withheld it - and was just hoping it would blow over - well, he would have made a serious blunder - maybe well intentioned - but likely costly

This could end up like some of these corporate 'payoff / bribery' cases where a sales manager in south east Asia pays off an official & get caught - and the CEO (who may never have even met the sales manager) get fired - and goes on trial - because, by regulation & law, the CEO is the ultimate responsible party. That CEO could have had weekly meetings screaming about integrity & forbidding payoffs - does not matter ... the CEO is the one accountable. Not saying Flood goes on trial - just that there are these situations where a top official's fate can be impacted by the ill-advised actions of another person ... accountability does not always mean you have control.

This article is the Kyle Flood I have had the good fortune to interact with. Anyone trying to say he somehow was not doing the right thing, to the best of his ability, for his players and the university are completely misguided in my opinion.

Unless you have been a coach at any level in an area that has folks living in less than ideal conditions you don't even have the slightest clue about some of the issues and situations he has to deal with. You can do everything in your power to try to guide and educate the young people put in your charge about life and still be unsuccessful getting through to them. There are conditions and influences they face that would make most average folks' jaw drop. To those affected it's the only "normal" they know. Watching the ivory tower folks being shocked and appalled makes me laugh. Those calling for his firing because of these players are even worse.

Having been a player and coach in this situation, I have seen some really good kids/guys go really bad despite my and many others' best efforts. It is a sad reality, but you can not save everyone from their circumstances or themselves. All you can do is keep trying.

Just stay true to yourself Kyle and keep chopping.

I am in no way, shape or form excusing the actions of the players involved. I think they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and dismissed from the program. I AM saying unless you have walked a mile in Coach Flood's shoes you can not judge him. There won't be many ESPN headlines or an expose' on his success stories. Those don't get eyeballs and make $ like the scandalous. The linked article is the exception not the rule. I can't speak for Kyle, he will do a better job on his own, but I will continue to help folks because everybody deserves a chance. There are no news stories or pats on the back, but that is not what I and many like me are in it for.

There are many forces out there working against Coach Flood. His CHARACTER is not one of them. RU would be making a big mistake letting him go. RU has a knack for making huge mistakes though. We shall see.

I agree, if he knew there was an investigation of players and did not pass it up, its a problem. But, what if he did, then it isn't. It also isn't a problem for the AD to then know and to do the same thing Kyle did which is nothing because it was just an investigation.

I can't get behind anything that throws mud at someone that isn't a coach anymore. The current coach has a responsibility to teach, inspire and discipline his current team. That said, I cannot get behind anything that throws mud at Flood either; he is not responsible for the choices his team members make when they are away from his "sight." Why can't we just call SL and NJ.com crappy reporting and a witch-hunt. Why can't we call these kids idiots. It is their fault that the school is being dragged through the mud again - not a coach - any coach. It was their choices. They were given opportunities galore, and each one of them threw it away. IDIOTS!
