But, by the very nature of things, this is the way it is supposed to be.
I’ll start with 4B. Varina returning to Dinwiddie. Does anything else really need to be said about this game?
Equally so, Huguenot traveling up to the Jungle to take on Hiter and the Louisa Lions. Caroline did a good job of focusing on not letting Hiter have free rein and dominate the game. But Louisa is definitely not a one pony show, and Carter and others proved that. I think the 42-7 win makes that clear.
Over in 4D, assuming Handley takes care of business as expected today, the kids on the Jefferson Forest bus headed up to Handley can wave at the Sherando kids headed down south to GW. (This assumes GW plays on Saturday?) FYI, Region 4B voted to play on Saturday at 1:30 this coming week. Both games in D are really intriguing to me.
In C, I am hoping to see the two Loudouns both win, because I want to see if LV can get a little payback on LC.
And for the first time in several years, Phoebus hasn’t been anointed as the King of 4A, AND the C4 champion before the playoffs even began. Who knows, they still might reign supreme, but it is certainly not a foregone conclusion. As I write this, the Churchland Truckers are up 14-12 in the 3rd., but only a fool would declare that Phoebus is “done” until the final buzzer. If the Phantoms find a way, it creates another matchup of two long time foes that almost always results in a classic, Hampton and Phoebus. In the other 4A game, conventional wisdom would tell us that Lafayette will easily handle the Packers from Smithfield. Not so fast Mr. Conventional Wisdom! Several times this year I was ready to dismiss Smithfield as “legit”, only to get surprised. So let’s wait and see. Maybe the Packers have a “meat cleaver” up their sleeve.
So hold on to your hats, because next week is guaranteed to be exciting.
On last note, probably every one of us here on VaPreps has voiced issues and concerns with the VHSL Power Point and rider point system. Me included. But when you look at the matchups for next week it is awful hard to argue that the best teams in each Region are not playing. I think the points system and round one of the playoffs has produced a pretty darn competitive and fair regional playoff format.
