....sure gives you the warm fuzzies....

and to all those who berated people for debating whether the risk was worth it, try this on for size from anonymous USC and UCLA officials

Though they are from rival schools who often wage intense battles for the same athletes, the sources agreed on this about Sidney: The reward of suiting up such a prodigious talent was not worth the larger risk.

Here's my sheepish response to the concerns:

USC and UCLA boosters have been the ones footing all these bills, a la Reggie Bush, and those schools cannot risk an investigation. We, however, are not concerned because we would never engage in such conduct. BBBAAAAAAAAAAAA

...earning the reputation of being someone only interested in digging up dirt on MSU. Has he written any blogs or articles about the potential this young man has for our team and program? How many positive articles or blogs has he written comparing to negative? Just what agenda does the LA Times have after the local prodigy heads back home to Mississippi?

Let's face it, for the most part the NCAA turns a blind eye on basketball unless it's a deal with a player entering and then withdrawing from the draft. I don't think anybody doubts he's received illegal benefits, the same or maybe a little moreso than most of the top AAU players. The issue for USC is that this comes after the Reggie Bush stuff and you know any NCAA probe would probably turns up tons of bad stuff - so the decision to save the hassle was worth it. You know UCLA has been trying like hell to catch up with USC so they probably didn't want the drama either. Plus you've got tons of agents located out their and a big press corps that will be following his ever move. That stuff is much less an issue at MSU. We were late in his recruitment so there's not a ton of past history to dig up and we're not a media center. I also think Rick's smart enough on this one to give any benefits later and not upfront when everybody is looking for stuff.

I didn't read the article word for word, so I may have missed out on some key points.

But, from what I gather, we'll be in limbo for most of the summer while MSU and NCAA figure out whether Sidney is going to qualify or not. I assume the Riek developments are probably insurance (given past history of MSU luck) on Sidney not qualifying. If he does qualify, that's just icing on an already stacked cake.

My assumptions are that MSU's hands have been pretty clean with this whole situation while Sidney was in L.A. It sounds like the Sidney family was getting handouts in some form or fashion given the life style they were living out there ($1.5 mil house, etc.) on a fairly limited income. I doubt anybody MSU related was funding an LA lifestyle knowing Sidney would likely commit to a high profile school out West. That is why I assume we are clean.

Now, let's say in reality the Sidneys were getting paid by an agent(s), UCLA, USC or a combination thereof and none of that is provable (now). My question to the board would be:

If MSU and the NCAA perform their due diligence on Sidney's amateur status and nothing comes up that disqualifies him from playing next year, then, after the season starts, or is completed, we find out that Sidney was getting $$ from either USC, UCLA, or an agent, how does that affect MSU?

Veazey isn't digging up dirt on State. When this article, or one just like it, is on the very front page of Yahoo.com, I would hardly call that "digging up dirt." Hell, I went to search for something online and it popped up on the front page (didn't even have to click on sports). He is a beat writer, and it's his job to find all news pertaining to Mississippi State, positive or negative. Give it a rest.

But come on..this is a major story on a major recruit.
I personally have been looking for this story since Paul Jones mentioned it coming last week early on..even before the signing.
It is not Kyles job to write fluff pieces on a newly signed recruit..I think we all know where to find those sunshine stories with Momma.

....but it would be a far better scenario, if there are problems, to discover them on the frontend.

In other words, I'd rather his amateur status be revoked on the front end than the back.

from the perspective of a top-tier team with a winning tradition who pulls these kinds of recruits all the time and may have possibly committed recruiting violations? No.

Is it worth it for a mid-tier team who gets a recruit like this a couple of times a decade, but has the potential to work it's way higher in the recruiting pecking order, and has no ties to said violations. Hell yes.

Picking up the scraps from the big-boys might get us there one day.

and documented it, before we let him suit up for a game. If it turns out later that there's a problem, we'll still be in decent shape. But if we haven't and there's a problem later, we're in deep ****.

They could and SHOULD get nailed for the whole Bush/Mayo deal like most NCAA schools would be. I think taking a player with even a speck of baggage would have left the NCAA no choice but to put the wood to them.
Stansbury plays the game as well as anyone when it comes to stretching the rules. I think if Sidney is ruled ineligible then it won't be Stansbury's doing.

I am blown away that people get upset when these reproters do their jobs. It is like you want Zeazey to just ignore anything that is negative towards MSU. That is what Gene is for

Backer you dumbass, how is KV diggin up dirt? As you stated, its a piece by the LA TIMES!! Veazey didnt dig up any dirt, he linked an article about an MSU signee.

Good lord you are a tool.

He is an MSU beat reporter, he just reports on whats going on. He linked articles that showed how talented Renardo is last week, as well as articles that showed how inconsistent he has been at times. He showed information(good and bad) about him.
Here is more information on Renardo...information is a good thing bud, it isnt scary.

You are the definition of one of those guys in Plato's Allegory of the Cave. Seek the light and you shall be free, dumbass.

Veazey may be doing his job to make sure all of this "negative" stuff gets out there to whoever's interested but at least Locke took the time to do some leg work to get the other side's response to the story. I didn't see anywhere where Veazey indicated he'd even attempted to get the Sidney family or their attorney's response to this. Yes, Veazey is just "doing his job", and that's fine, but he does always seem to lead the bandwagon on anything that might reflect negatively on us and definitely doesn't go out of his way to do us any favors. I realize its not his job to promote the school he reports on, and to that I would say he does his job quite well.

....in this thread who claims USC & UCLA dropped Sidney because they can't afford the NCAA looking into their affairs (especially USC, who has a giant can of worms waiting to be opened a al Reggie Bush).

On the other hand, I do no feel comfortable when a lawyer gets involved in the recruiting process.

The NCAA has a history of making up their own laws & creating their own "lawyers" out of whole cloth (e.g., the shyster who was screwing Xenareb).

I don't see how a [real] lawyer is going to help much if the NCAA body politic decides they do not want Sidney to play @ State.

I'm glad I mostly just enjoy going and watching the games at the Hump and couldn't tell you the names of any of the starters until at least a month into the season. All of this takes the fun out of sports. The internets is ruining the simplicity of just being a sports fan and enjoying the game. It's gotten to a point where the game itself is less important then the run up to the game.

So you don't think that an article that quotes what appears to be a concerned MSU compliance officer is newsworthy in Mississippi? I bet you would if this young man had signed with Ole Miss.

As to the LA Times agenda. I'm guessing its to sell newspapers and generate hits to their web site.
