Wow, UK only favored by 7 1/2 over Southern Miss (posted on KSR).

This game is critical for Stoops...a loss would be absolutely devastating. Hopefully, it's not nearly as close as a one touchdown game.

don't think the line was much bigger for us last year opening with ULL

spread is fine by me, keep the team from any complacency or sleepwalking or lack of focus

Early opener at Southpoint was UK -7.5; now -7. Couple of others now have it at UK -8.

Cats closed as 17 point favorites over ULL.

I would bet hard on the cats. USM is good, but with a new coaching staff I think catching them early equals a big win for us.

i agree sm is a good team but it cant be lost that the head coach they lost was an offensive coach and that their late season surge was against horrible teams. they outscored teams 45 to 15 in the last half of the season. they had one win against a top 60 team... but they beat the teams they were supposed to beat.

if barker plays well i think we win pretty comfortable... 16 or so pts. if he struggles its gonna be a scratch and claw game.
but i've seen more than one poll that has them ranked ahead of us.

I half expect Dawson to call bombs all game. Glad the secondary is the strength of the defense.

Since losing to WKU two years in a row and almost losing to EKU last year, I don't take any team lightly. Either Stoops can coach and the boys in blue are sick of losing or it's going to be a looooooong season and probably the end of the Stoops tenure. Another 5-7 season will just not cut it.

It will be interesting to see how Dawson fares with an accurate QB and a pretty good running back, against a team he knows very well. Cats should win this one, but it is not a cupcake. Good opening test, and critical to a successful year.

Southern Miss QB threw for over 4K yards last year.

This game is scary.

I'd say UK by 4-5 pts but it's picking from the heart. Senior QB who threw for 4K+ going against a D with no pass rush is not conducive to great success. Still think they'll figure out a way to win, UK 28-24.

S. Miss is quite good. What I wanna know is when was this game scheduled? We already get a murderers row schedule, why pick one of the best mid majors too? Now we've got the added bonus of Dawson being on the opposing sideline... That can't help.

Can't help? I think the opposite. Guy is incompetent. In terms of scheming our defensive staff will have the advantage.

I hope he does, our secondary will eat him alive.

Not if we give him 30 secs to throw the ball. Heaven help us if he decides to run.

The secondary is the strength of the defense but they can't make up for the weak sister DL. Hold out some hope for the linebackers but even they are saddled by the DL.

Tell me if that is wrong 'cause I expect another repeat of the last two seasons.

Is he a dual- threat, running QB? If yes, then it's anybody's game. If not a TD margin of 7 pts for the Cats is about right.

But Dawson hate running his qb, had never ever schemed to do that when he arrived. Or use a tight end. Or wildcat.

Depends on how much info he can impart to the competent coaches. Plus, we haven't seen Dawson with an accurate QB.

Exactly, if a qb gets comfortable in the pocket and has time, not a secondary can cover his receivers. I don't know anything about Southern Miss's team. But they aren't a P5 school and can take partials. If they have a couple of guys that are ballistic fast and a qb not facing any pressure Josh Norman and Patrick Peterson can't cover them. So you really don't want them going deep unless the qb is under pressure, he is a pretty good qb.

How do you feel about the outcome if our DL play hasn't Improved and their 4000 hard QB has all day to find targets.

I personally think who is going to win this game is their OL vs our front 7. Our secondary is good but not good enough for 7-8 seconds of coverage.

Could have been after their recent WINLESS season (think UL played them that year) and the very good record they had last year.

Like i said, they lost their offense minded hc to the pros and got dawson. Dawson seemed stubborn here and if he learns from his MISTAKES then he could eat us up... but I doubt he is an upgrade over last year's play calling.

They played 4 games against horrible teams and 1 more against a bad team. They weren't hanging 45 on the good teams. We drilled Charlotte too.

I think we originally had UAB scheduled for this game. When UAB folded its football team, So. Miss was one of the few schools willing to play us on late notice.

Troll much. Souther miss is a good team and a very good experiened QB

I expec a 14 pt win but will be close much of the game
You're calling this guy a troll for expecting more than a 7 point win against a southern miss team with Shannon Dawson calling the offense? HA! If we lose this game. To the OC we fired. It would be the most devestating loss in program history and might be the straw that breaks the camels back. If we lose this game I think stoops tenure is done, because he'd be losing to the terrible OC he just fired. We better win this game. AT HOME. By more than 7. If I had a bookie I'd bet a whole lot on this game.

Effing Shannon Dawson is the OC I think you're forgetting how terrible he is. His first season calling plays at this level of football was last season at UK. And it showed. His first gig should've never ever been an SEC gig but something about stoops I don't understand. Expect that line to go to between 11-13 by kickoff. A lot of people are and should bet UK. We have no business losing that game. People said ULL was good last season. What was there final record? And what was there record the season before? They weren't the same team. I know southern miss returns a great QB but they aren't the same team no excuse for this game. I don't get why people keep acting like they have a real good team. You're the troll if you're giving stoops a pre kickoff excuse for this game.

Im guessing you're a stoops apologists. No business for any SEC school to lose to any Mid Major. Even a school as bad as Kentucky, thing is though we almost have SEC quality talent. We have OVC level coaching though as far as the head coach goes. Haven't seen anything from stoops that indicates a good head coach at this point, unprepared, uninspired team game to game. Never have seen one in game adjustment when opposing teams switch up a scheme on offense or defense. Horrible game and clock management. It's been atrocious. With that said we should still win the opener at least.

Before Shannon Dawson got fired I was on this board begging and praying game after game that we fire him, people kept defending Dawson. Never understood why though because he's never called plays and he was terrible. At the end of the season I kept saying time after time. If Dawson returns I'm canceling my season tickets. I meant it. And my prayer was answered. Was a very relieving and gratifying moment for me when he lost his job as the OC at UK. He is the WORST offensive coordinator in the history of the SEC. That's not an exaggeration. And people think we should have a close game against him. HA!

I think it is a 1 score game, and I'm surprised our fans aren't taking this game more seriously. Just because it is the opener doesn't mean we have an inalienable right to win it. Southern Miss is coming off a 9-5 season. Their quarterback Nick Mullens is 1 of the top returning quarterbacks in the country, and he has plenty of returning talent around him. Their defense also has some talent. This team lost 36-28 to Nebraska in Lincoln last September. Granted it was not a great Nebraska team, but it's still a solid road performance against a Big Ten team with P5 talent. They beat Rice 65-10 in November on Rice's home field. Rice isn't a great team, but they take football seriously in Houston. Anyone who thinks Kentucky will cakewalk past Southern Miss is putting too much money on Shannon Dawson and not enough on the overall matchup. This is a tougher opener for us than Louisiana Lafayette was. That doesn't mean we can't win it, but Drew Barker and our offensive line will have to be good, and we have to find a pass rush.

This is a tough game for Stoops to have to start the season with. A win is a win but if UK wins in a close one a segment of the fan base will question why UK did not win by more. If they lose it will be disastrous. A blow out win appeases the masses and builds some excitement going out not the Florida game.

All of that is true. Southern Miss is a tough opponent with a quarterback that can only be controlled if Coach Eliot finds a pass rush. There is always an ongoing debate about the nonconference schedule. Some people want bunny opponents to pad Kentucky's win total for bowl purposes, while others want a tougher SOS for credibility and entertainment reasons. Although I don't have any inside information, it seems that the school plans to gradually ramp up our SOS. Appeasing the masses is a long term goal, not a 1 game goal. Blowout wins are great, but you can't schedule them unless you are willing to play Austin Peay and Charlotte every week. That isn't the way of life in the SEC. Kentucky is heavily invested in Stoops. His contract runs through the 2020 season and the school is on the hook for all of it. They have upgraded the stadium and built new practice facilities to accommodate his requirements. They haven't done that for any previous Kentucky football coach. For now, Stoops is entrenched at Kentucky. If some of our fans throw tantrums over the result of the Southern Miss game, what else is new?

Seems correct. Lot of unknowns and new schemes on both schools. Southern Miss while going 9-5 doesn't have any impressive wins from last season but did play Miss St closer but not by much.

It's a must win no doubt and anyone who acts like UK could recover from a loss like that is living in a fantasy world. However, I think UK wins by more than 7 but it's not an outrageous line by Vegas

Southern Miss was terrible before last year and they beat up on mid major opponents. However they do appear to be a strong team and an opponent that shouldn't have been scheduled on week one especially when you have a program struggling just to make a bowl game. A loss would virtually eliminate UK from bowl contention as I have a hard time seeing six wins with a win in week one.

If we were to lose this game, how would Stoops/the team/the fans react after starting the season 0-2? Yes I know a loss against Southern Miss doesn't necessarily guarantee one at Florida, but come on who are we kidding.

Will 0-2 to start the year trigger circle the wagons mode?

Even with a win over Southern Miss, I still have a hard time seeing 6 wins in our 2016 schedule. Contrary to what some people are demanding, we will not beat Florida or Louisville on the road or Georgia at home this year. So getting to 6 wins will require winning 4 out of 5 against Southern Miss, South Carolina, Missouri, Mississippi State, Vandy. Some people see the weaknesses of these other teams, but don't understand the limitations of our own team. We have a new quarterback, a new punter, a real problem at offensive tackle, and a defensive front 7 being rebuilt out of reserves and transfers. So none of these games will be easy.

Not a cakewalk, but I'll take the over & think like 10-14 pt win. I think we win 7, maybe 6. Just think the increased talent year by year has to break thru at some point (And should have last year between V/FL/AU.). I believe we have increased OC talent too. Seven would be 3 non-conference + V/SC/MO/MSU with MSU the most marginal. My next win would be FL, then UL.
