A trip for Karen Ferguson Dayes' Louisville women's soccer team to St. Louis resulted in a 1-0 victory by the Cards last night. The squads played a scoreless first half -- Louisville showed slightly more offense than the Billikens, but both squad's goalkeepers did a good job in keeping the ball out of the net.

This one, in all fairness, could have been 1-0 St. Louis early in the second half. The Cards got caught short on a SLU offensive crossing pattern and the Billikens Hannah Sawyer fired a dead-on shot at goal and Cardinal goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelous . Fortunately, the shot was slightly high and bounced off the cross bar of the goal. A follow up attempt by was high and wide and the Cards escaped danger.

Louisville nearly put the first goal of the game on the board when Morgan Bentley was fouled several minutes later in front of the SLU goal. The Cards were award a penalty kick and Maisie Whitsett was selected to take it. Unfortunately, the SLU goalie Emily Puricelli guessed right and dove to her left and stopped Whitsett's shot on goal.

The lone score came with about 30 minutes left in the match. Nina Nicosia found Morgan Bentley with a pass at the top middle of the box and Bentley immediately drove a shot to the right corner of the goal to make it 1-0 Louisville. The Cards had an opportunity to make it 2-0 with five minutes to play, but a Bentley attempt sailed just wide of the SLU goal.

“That is a great road win against a very good team,” said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. “I’m very proud of our team as we keep learning and growing.”

The now 4-0 Cards return home to host WKU Sunday night at Lynn Stadium on Floyd Street.
